Ridiculous sleep 12+ HRS please help!

I can sleep, 13 or 14 hours a night easily. In fact i do alot. My REM period doesnt even seem to start until after 10 hours of sleep. I have been to doctors. I have tried vitamins, i exercise regularly and eat very healthy. I do not consume any type of drugs including caffeine. Does anyone have any advice on how to be able to function on 8 hours of sleep every night like a normal human being? Note that sometimes im fine, other times its torture...

I can sleep 12 hours staright no problem. Ive done 24 hours straight before.

Is your bed uncomfortable? I find I wake up a lot thru the night, some nights I notice, others I don't. but im pretty sure thats why I can sleep so long, i dont get continious sleep, its interupted. and I think my bed may be a cause of it. (beds a peice of shit).

My bed is very expensive. Its weird for me if i sleep in the same spot a few nights in a row nothing can satisfy me. Like anytime i sleep in a new bed whether its cheap, hard, soft i sleep great that night. I think i may try switching from my bed, to the guest bed, to the couch every night. I wish i could afford a tempur pedic.

I can easily sleep over 10 hours. Easily. Just get an alarm clock.

I would love Tempur-Pedic as well. But I can sleep 10-16 hours or sometimes 4-6 hours. I never had a routine of sleep, which I heard is bad but it works for me. Like you said maybe switch beds, maybe sleep in the sofa one day then switch back to your bed to see if it works.

Just don't be a tired wimp and get out of bed. You should be able to function on 4-5 hours of sleep just fine. Usually I get about 6 per night, but sometimes I can sleep for 2 days if I'm hungover bad enough.

It could have a lot to do with your age. If you are a teenager this really isn't too uncommon. You will grow out if it if that is the case.

That's a good point, what is your age by the way?

Just get into a routine of sleeping 6-8 hours a day, even on weekends, no excuses. You will get used to it and you will start feeling fine. I have a feeling that a lot of this is in your head. Your body does not need that much sleep.

May be 6-8 will be too harsh. But probably if you try sleeping 8-9 every day will do the trick.

Ill try doing this. Its absolutely horrible for me to awaken in the mornings after an average amount of sleep. It feels like the closest thing to torture. Lying in my bed i swear, it makes me sick to my stomach just to imagine standing up. There is an enourmous weight overtaking my body. I have been trying to just force myself to get up no matter how sick i feel and it seems to quickyl resolve itself. Hopefully i will get into a habit...

Well you better start in that case. Coffee is one of God's greatest gifts to man. The world runs off coffee. Literally. :p

We all feel like this. Waking up to me - the first 5 minutes is torture. It really sucks. But once you get over that initial torture, you'll feel a lot better. I don't know how old you are, but when I was 18, I used to sleep like 10 hours a day. Now I'm 20, and I value my time more. I actually dislike sleeping more than 8 hours a day now, unless I got trashed the night before in which I'll make the exception.

I've gone from an average of 8-10 hours of sleep a night 2 years ago to 6-8 hours of sleep a night now. In no way am I being forced to sleep less either.

Your body does not need that much sleep.
Agreed - get out of the mindset that you need 12 hours of sleep because this is NOT true. There is a slight adjustment phase, but I'd say to fully develop a new sleep cycle it should take one week tops.

Why is it socially acceptable to be addicted to caffeine?

I wouldn't drink caffeine unless you really need it. If you get about 8 hours of sleep a night, there's no reason to need it. The problem with coffee is that it sort of creates "pretend energy" out of thin air. It's energy that you don't actually have, and it will deplete you.

As far as caffeine, I should have said i don't consume it on a regular basis. There are occasions when i will chug a monster before going into work. Being a waiter i cant be tired in any way when i am trying to handle so much at once.

I read the other day that waking up at the end of a sleep cycle helps alot so i decided to test this. Sleep cycles last 90 minutes so i set my alarm for seven and a half hours. When i woke up i felt pretty damn good. But i still had about 45 minutes to sleep. So i set my alarm again and when it went off in the middle of my next sleep cycle i felt terrible. Exactly how what i read described it. Maybe i should just try to do that.

Because it makes you more productive. I'm not in any way addicted to caffeine, but when I'm about to go through a 6-7 hour session of school work and studying (like I'm about to today) - there is not a chance I will make it through without some caffeine. It actually doesn't hurt me at all. It makes me more focused on what I need to get done for a few hours, and I get my stuff done. Eventually I'll sort of slip back into this really laid back mood, but usually by then I'll have done what I needed to get done - thanks to the caffeine. I love the stuff, but I only use it when necessary (which is about 2-3 times a week in my case). I don't use it for waking up, but for the focus it brings me - especially when studying.

The people who crash from caffeine are the ones who drink it at 7-8AM and crash after lunch time.

I was once like you, when I was 18, I slept for 12 hours a night. Here is my story, it might help you.

I was always sleepy. I even went home from school a few time, because I was too sleepy to do anything, and when I went home, I fell asleep. There was nothing wrong with me. I then discovered the wonders of Aloe Vera, and for a year or so, I drank Aloe Vera juice (it was mixed with some other herbs, like chamomile) and it helped me go from 12 hours of sleep to 10 hours of sleep. I eventually quit drinking it because it was pretty expensive. However, I had by now developed a regular sleeping cycle, which helped me survive well on 10 hours of sleep, but still no less. Then I saved up money and bought a Tempur mattress, I went from 10 hours of sleep to 8 hours of sleep in a matter of weeks. I now need 7-8 hours of sleep a night, which is normal.

If you can, you should save up for a Tempur mattress, it helped me just as it has helped many others. It looks like you are doing all the right things to need less sleep.

Do you always go to bed at the same time, and try to wake up at the same time?

I used to find that even when I got 9 hrs sleep, it was barely adequate. I was working a rotating 24 hr roster though, so wasn't good for maintaining a regularly sleeping pattern.

The other factor is environment. The body naturally says "go to sleep when it is dark, wake when it is light". If the room is on the western side of the house where it won't get sunlight until the afternoon, it will remain dark enough to trick your body into thinking that it is still night.
