Apparently, Melatonin inhibits REM sleep during the early stages of sleep, which results in a REM rebound during the latter part of sleep. Fundamentally, this means that you'll encounter more intense REM cycles to supplant the lack of earlier ones, and so a higher chance of becoming lucid. Thus, if you awaken early, it's likely that you'll miss important REM cycles, and a lack of REM sleep may result in a hangover-like feeling. Thus, although Melatonin facilitates the induction of sleep, and increases REM intensity, it is recommended that you have an appropriate amount of sleep after consumption to ensure positive effects. |
