      Melatonin side effects.

Anything I should know before testing out melatonin? I know it's 'natural' and that trying it out just a few times as an experiment might not do too much to me, but it's still nice to know if there's anything I should know before trying it out.

Apparently, Melatonin inhibits REM sleep during the early stages of sleep, which results in a REM rebound during the latter part of sleep. Fundamentally, this means that you'll encounter more intense REM cycles to supplant the lack of earlier ones, and so a higher chance of becoming lucid. Thus, if you awaken early, it's likely that you'll miss important REM cycles, and a lack of REM sleep may result in a hangover-like feeling. Thus, although Melatonin facilitates the induction of sleep, and increases REM intensity, it is recommended that you have an appropriate amount of sleep after consumption to ensure positive effects.

      That's all I know. *shrugs*

you need to stay away from any other type of drug/meds - also, I believe you cannot touch caffeine, alcohol or smoke. there is still a lot of unanswered questions about melatonin.

      That is untrue.

Melatonin is very safe, and has almost no side effects, besides waking up feeling very full of sleep.

well that is what I have both been told/read - they are supposed to counteract the effects of melatonin.

All I know about Melatonin is that your pineal gland produces your own Melatonin and the best way to get it is stay in a dark place-no lights at all, for shooting up its production, after that your pineal gland will generate Seratonin too (it is powerful than Melatonin) The best thing you can do to get your own Melatonin's production is to have a diet based on milk, rice, oats, tomatoes, sweet korn, soya, etc. at maximum an hour before going to sleep. There is some information about a natural way to get your own Melatonin best produced. I would not recomend anybody to take an outter drug but to support your "own drug production" inside your pineal gland.
      regards

I've tried it a few times and I love it. I don't like doing anything in excess in my life, so I don't take too much or do it often. I've only taken it about 1-2 times a week in the past couple of months. Each night I take it though I notice a SIGNIFICANT increase in the number of dreams I have and the length of them. And when I've taken Melatonin and a B6 supplement, I can usually write the longest entries in my Dream Journal than any other day.

I wouldn't recommend the liquid B6 supplements though. Those apparently work almost instantly, and I've felt sick every time I've woken up from them.
Melatonin + Regular B6 supplement seems very safe though since their just dietary supplements and produce amazing effects.

Ive been using it for years. Its beautiful because before i was introduced to LD's i was just aware that i could have these incredible dreams on about 10 - 15 hours of sleep. I dont sleep much then crash hard so this was great for me. I've never experienced any side effects. Although i do believe in this thread Box77 has the right idea, unfortunately my body is not in the best condition, so a 5mg pill 20 minutes before bed is like a godsend.

      Hello Friends.........

As with all hormonal supplements, there are many different potential melatonin side effects to contend with which may make this a unwise choice for your condition, unless you find a quality supplement with recommended dosages.

Hopefully there will be more adequate clinical trials to prove the saftety of melatonin supplements.

Reported melatonin side effects include headaches, nausea, depression, nightmares and vivid dreams, irritability, abdominal cramps and dizziness.

Melatonin facts also point to negative effects on the reproductive system as well as decreased sex drive in both men and women.

      Thanks
