I've been told I do this.
Not all the way open but about halfway.
This can't be true because if it was I would not be able to achieve REM sleep and thus, no dreams, correct?

Well you dream in other stages as well, but they aren't as vivid as REM sleep. And I'm sure you could go through REM with your eyes half open - they can still move.
There was a baby on TV who was born without eyelids and slept with their eyes open all night but they're sleeping habits and cycles were normal. So I doubt to interferes with your sleep stages.
Maybe your eyelid muscles just aren't strong enough to stay closed all the way through the night.
As mentioned, most dreams are in REM, and dreams in slow wave sleep are a bit different.
I've heard that non-REM LDs are more like a blank canvas that things just pop into, with less automatic interaction from the subconscious
