      Couldn't wake up

I hope this is the right place to post this. Last night I was in the middle of a rather disturbing dream at about four in the morning. I was trying to wake myself up but it wasn't working. Then I thought I heard someone breathing in my room- usually I just go back to sleep because it's my mom coming in for laundrey or something, but I wanted to know who it was, and when I tried to open my eyes, nothing happened.
I started panicking, and I think I might have just been dreaming it because I started having nightmares or something, just really creepy thoughts, and I couldn't wake myself up. It was like I was trapped in my own head or something, but I could have sworn I was awake
Is this normal? What was it?
When I close my eyes it looks like this...

Could have been sleep paralysis, or a false awakening nightmare?

How could it have been a false awakening if he never really woke up?

Oh, no worries. By definition, you will not really wake up during a false awakening. The whole point of a false awakening is that it is a dream that you have awakened, but it is false, because you are still dreaming, not awake.

Possibly. It's very possible that you experienced sleep paralysis (you woke up and your body was paralyzed, possibly accompanied by some hallucinations). It's also possible you had a false awakening. It's even possible something else happened. But I wasn't there, what do you think happened?

I don't know, that's why I`m so confused. It could be a combination of a couple of things, but it was 4:00 am, I was scared and (possibly) half asleep, so it's hard to really tell what was going on.
I've had sleep paralysis in my arms before, it's very possible that's what it was, I can't be certain.
