      Sleeping in College?

Hey, I'm moving into a college dorm in the fall. I'm pretty familiar with what makes me sleep well, and I have a few questions that I hope will help me prepare for the transition.

I really love to fall asleep to music; the stereo in my room has a "sleep" feature that I can set to turn itself off after a certain increment of time (15 minutes works for me.) The whole point of the music is to distract my mind from its chatter, plus, it's just comforting to have relaxing music. I usually just listen to the radio station that plays classic music, which usually gets the job done. I'm going to buy an mp3 player. I saw some pillow speakers at amazon, and was wondering if those work well. I don't want to bother my roommate with my music, so I was wondering if there is a good system to listen to music for the purpose of falling asleep without bothering someone else in the room.

Also, I was wondering if there is a specific mp3 player that, for whatever reason, is superior for sleeping to. I've noticed that some have fm radio and some don't. Also, volume levels and auto timers are important.

Lastly, what are some good albums/mp3s to fall asleep to? I don't know if I'll have radio or not, and plus, it's always good to have something to play if the music on air is really rough.

Your best bet would be to get earphones/headphones. They might be annoying at first to fall asleep with, but you'll get used to them, and you won't bother your roommate.

That's what I do. If you sleep on your back get comfortable headphones. If you sleep on your side, get earbuds. If your roommate snores you can even get noise-canceling headphones.

Keep in mind that any kind of speaker will bother your roommate. You'd be surprised how loud even the slightest noise can be in a small room in the dead of night.

Thanks for the replies! Sometimes I sleep on my back and other times I sleep on my side, so I will probably get earbuds. I'm sure that I'll get used to them.

When I had a roommate I wore earbuds, and when I had a single I still wore earbuds. Thin walls mean you might keep your neighbor up, too. Just start sleeping with headphones now, by the time the fall semester rolls around it'll be no big deal.
