As soon as I begin to sleep; images, thoughts, memories pour through my head

It's immediate. Even when I'm just lying on my desk trying to nap. Yet I can rarely ever recall what i was thinking or seeing and am left confused. I feel like I'm having a bunch of dreams, since I can never remember them afterwards. It can occur as soon as I go to rest while being driven in the passenger seat of a car or taking a short nap. I've also become lucid just seconds after taking a nap. I feel like my body skips the first phases of sleep and heads right into REM. Does this make any sense?

Yes, and it sounds like what you are describing is Hypnagogia.
Things are not as they seem

Wow. Thank you so much. I'm definitely going to look more into this and understand it better.
