In the task bar menu some of the running programs you can right click and it will allow you to Exit that program. ~ This seems like what you are already doing.
Some programs you can delete entirely and they will not be a problem again. However some programs, though you may not use them are vital for the proper operation of your system program
Another option is to go into programs, accessories and scheduled tasks. You can manipulate what runs from there.
Before you do any of the above except maybe the first one I would wait until Kaniaz, techboy or a more knowledgeable member response. :)
Press Windows Key+R (or go to 'Run') > Type "msconfig" > Press OK
This will open the handy dandy Microsoft Configuration tool. Go to the "Startup" tab where you'll see everything that starts up with your computer, you can uncheck them and press OK.
If these applications that start up are truly "unneeded" then aside from shutting down their initialisation I'd suggest updating your anti-virus and running a full scan, heh.
My laptop doubles as a digital audio workstation. When used in that capacity, there is a whole bunch o' stuff that needs to die, be killed or go away quietly or otherwise.
There is a handy dandy and free tool "out there" called "End It All". A quick yahoo will probably bring up dozens of places to download it. You run this thing, train it a tiny bit, and viola! The goopage is there when I'm on the 'net and need it, and gone when I don't.
Here's one place to get it: http://www.docsdownloads.com/enditall-1.htm
Suckup time!
