Is it overly scrached or anything? If it is, that may be your problem....
Also, check to make sure that the CD drive is even detected and functioning in the hardware list. If it has an exclamation point (I believe) something is wrong with it.
If you are getting that yellow (!) as ultrasonicsite mentioned then you may want to check the device manager to make sure it's working properly. If you don't see (!) Then it should be in the disk management console or you may have a bad drive.
If you can play any other disc in that same drive then its most likely not the drive. If its a dvd, maybe you dont have the right drivers.. If your drive doesnt show up in mycomputer either your drive is messed up or your drivers are screwed.
Okay, in the device manager there is indeed the yellow !. But, I don't know what to do at that point.
Often, it's just a matter of deleting the device from the device mangler, and letting it re-detect (maybe you need to make sure it's properly plugged in?)
The drive on my laptop came a little loose one time, and I just needed to push it back in. On a desktop, it's a bit more complicated hehe.
Well, I did uninstall it and "reinstall it" but it still doesn't work :( the ! is still there
What does the ! say anyway? (i.e. when you check the properties of it)
a bunch of technical stuff :?
....and the technical stuff is? Is it readable english, or memory addresses, like 0xDEADBEEF?
Device Status:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device
I don't suppose the drive included a link to drivers or something... I know some CD drives are fickle like that (but that was back in the older days).
check the jumpers on the back of the drive
use cable select if it's available
Something else we all neglected to ask (though come on, you shoulda been more descriptive from the start):
Is this a NEW computer (or a newly-installed drive), or did it just stop working all of a sudden?
It's a pretty new computer. And yes, it stopped working all of a sudden.
have you moved the drive at all (changed the data cable)?
I doubt it, I've never touched stuff like that.
