Midis are sequences of notes, not actual sounds. If you have a player that actually has recordings of sounds that different instruments make instead of synthesizing them it will sound better.
Another option that I use: Convert it to wav or mp3, import it into Audacity or another program like that. Add a 50% echo to it a tenth of a second later.
all midi is (as ninja said) is a sequence of on/off triggers
how those triggers are interpreted is entirely up to the software "playing" the midi file
for a standard "midi triggers = keyboard notes" type file, you can load any set of piano (or similar) samples
just bear in mind midi signals can be used for many things
drums, guitar, heck not only instruments either - you can control the lights in your living room via midi triggers
You can install midi "drivers" (they're not really drivers) that enhance your midi experience. I believe Yamaha has a good one, as does XG.
A year or two ago when I had some midis that I couldn't find a real live sound counterpart to, I used jetAudio. It allows to convert .midi files into .ogg with smoothing the sounds, adding reverberation, etc.
That's probably the closest you can get if you can't find the actual live performed version of the track.
You need to get software synthesizer, and play the midi in it, using a General-Midi preset.
For example look for a free or commercial software synthesizer that can play SF2 samples, and then try to find a free or commercial General-Midi SF2 sample file.
Or you can buy a sound card, with a better built-in synthesizer.
