I just want my Christmas presents to work properly =(

I also want to be able to remove stuff from my desktop that I didn't put there in the first place. I mean, what gives? I got some stuff that piggybacked on the driver CD and it made a few shortcuts on my desktop. Vista won't let me delete them, move them to the recycling bin or even see their properties.

So now I have ugly green house icons on my desktop >.<

Linux is getting re-installed weather my parents like it or not. I need at least a bit of time on a OS that isn't ultimately frustrating.

Nice find Tony!

I think i'll stick with a non-vista design though. They're too dumb to notice if I 'm using ubuntu except for if they want to use it. Then they figure it out either way =P

Yeah, Vista is just a minor upgrade. Supposedly Windows Seven will be a major upgrade. I imaging it will still have the same problems as Vista and then some, but probably even nicer graphics. Ever notice that Steve Balmer kinda looks like Dick Cheney?

If I didn't have to use dial-up, I'd probably install Kubuntu right now on my laptop. Though Vista hasn't really given me any problems, per sé, it's a royal pain in the ass running Photoshop with really big images, what with Vista already eating RAM as it is, and me not being able to afford more RAM. Of course, I'd still have that problem, as I'm not sure I'd want to try running Photoshop in WINE, but at least I'd have Linux, too.

As it is, though, I'm holding out for KDE 4, in the hope that it will be monstrously cool. When it finally comes out, then I'll install Kubuntu.

It's a software upgrade that's the practical equivalent of a hardware downgrade :)

KDE 4 missed the boat on Canonical's long term support for Hardy

Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) is still being released alongside Ubuntu 8.04 - in April, I believe
but Kubuntu will only receive the standard 18 months support from Canonical
(after which, the next version will be out (8.10), and support will move onto the new version - with LTS for Kub*)

The Gnome counterpart for 8.04, on the other hand, will receive the long term support (3 years for desktop, 5 years for server)

Why is Photoshop running so poorly with large images, are you using a 32-bit version of Vista?

Did you know that you can get an Ubuntu CD sent to you for the shipping fee? Photoshop probably won't work under WINE. Unless you are doing high level stuff then GIMP should suffice for you, you can dual boot Vista on it if you really need Photoshop. Or parallel boot if if you're nuts.

Yeah, LTS, or the lack thereof, doesn't bother me. I'll probably head to my sister's (where there is 5-meg cable) to download the latest CD image of Kubuntu 7.10 stable in a couple weeks, if KDE 4 releases when it's supposed to, so I can go ahead and update everything right then and there. Piece of Caek.

Well, to be fair, I only have 1GB of RAM when I really should have 2GBs, and it only runs all that slow when I'm working on something huge, which is rare. And believe me, I know about the Ubuntu CDs, I'm a big fan of Canonical. :D The LiveCDs make great backup OSs for when Windows craps out on you. I had them send me several of the last version, 7.04, not too long before 7.10 came out. Oh, and it's completely free, no postage. Unless you opt for the DVD version, of course.

Yeah, the GIMP is great, for sure. I used it pretty much exclusively for two years. I'm just used to CS3 now and have no desire to give it up. I will definitely be dual-booting, that's pretty much a given. Linux will be my hotspot and messing around/customizing OS.
