      Spread FireFox3 World Record

Mozilla is trying to break the world record of most software downloaded within 24 hours.

"Pledge" here and Mozilla will send you an email telling you, that you have 24 hours to download FireFox 3, on the day that it is released.

When I checked earlier today, they had 58000 pledges, then I checked now (10 hours later) and the number has multiplied by a factor of 3 (187k).

Help Mozilla break a record, and get what will supposedly be one of the best browsers ever (FireFox 3).

Firefox 3 really is quite offensive, they've tried to fix the many things wrong with Firefox 2 but many of the fixes are awkward and clumsy. Their download manager is still a joke, for instance. Whereas, Opera 9.5 has been delayed somewhat but it should be released very soon, and is looking like a huge, genuine improvement on an already superior piece of software.

We can always download directly from the site too, just to make it count.

If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

is it just me that thinks this whole
"come on, hammer our servers all at the same time, lets set a record, ignore p2p, ignore local repositories, ignore all the things designed to mitigate huge server loads and website downtimes - we're setting a record"
      is completely crass

I wouldn't have thought Mozilla would stoop to poorly thought out marketing gimmicks, but here we are...

We all know you love Opera, but your post seems just a bit too biased. I personally find Firefox 3 a very nice improvement over Firefox 2. It seems snappier, and the GUI is much nicer on Mac OS X (I didn't notice a big difference in Arch Linux) than it was in Firefox 2 or than it is in Opera 9.5. I agree that the download manager is no great shakes, but who uses their browser to download anything other than small files? Anything larger than a few megabytes is a job for a full-featured download accelerator like axel or aria2 IMO.

I was basing that comment on the cruddy RC that came with Ubuntu. Now I'm using Win XP again I can see the bebnefits over Firefox 2, yes, plus it doesn't look like shit like the Tango theme does . Opera 9.5 is still nicer though, once you replace the idiotic new skin with the classic one, because it's so fully featured and once you start using it's little conveniences it's hard to go back to the relative minimalism of Firefox (I'm not an extensions person). FF3 does seem fast though (whereas FF2 ran in slo-mo), faster than O9.5 in most tests, but O9.5 is fast enough (a huge improvement on 9.27) and, like I say, so much nicer to use.

Okay, that's fair. I like all my software minimalistic (my X11 setup is a single xterm running GNU screen with ratpoison as my window manager ), so Firefox 3's snappiness and less bloaty feeling was a pleasant change for the better. Once I get fully used to Vimperator (I'm cheating right now), I'll be able to seal away my mouse forever until the next time I have to use apps like GIMP or Inkscape.

When I installed the latest release candidate, most of my plugins stopped working, and it said there were not available compatible ones. Luckily, they are starting to come in now.

The thing I really like about FF3 is that you can type just about anything into your url bar, and it will bring up not just based on URL, but also based on page titles. That's pretty awesome.

Yeah, the new URL bar is awesome. I wish I could use the basic Vim bindings in Vimperator (h, j, k, l, etc.) without having to sacrifice the rest of the GUI, so I could keep the address bar and the other Firefox keyboard shortcuts that I'm used to. Maybe there's another extension that let's one do that. Or maybe I'll have to write it myself...

      I wouldn't mind a "vimperator lite" myself.

By the way, has vimperator fixed the "javascript doesn't work" issue? Like if I were to click on your login on the left, it pops up a menu with "view public profile", "send PM", etc. - in vimperator, that kind of thing didn't work, last I checked, which is what turned me off it.
