I would llike to start a HL2 mod discussion thread, while I have questions.
1) How do I start?
2) It's legal, right?
3) Do I need to learn any languages?
4) Can I make my own guns/characters/HUD?

It will show you which mods actually have players.
I can personally recommend The Hidden: Source and Source Forts. A good SP mod is Minerva.

Oh, you wanna mod yourself?
Well, you'd get the Source SDK which has a map editor and a bunch of tools, then you'd need extra programs for texture editing, modeling, animation etc. Then you'd also need a compiler, at least, and knowledge in programming. I believe that the SDK files are in C.
Well, I got the Source SDK, And I have no knowledge in C programming, and I don't have a compiler. I'll get to that!
Working on C, got a comiler environment, but I have no I dea how to compile it. lol.

Characters can also be very hard. You'd have to model your characters and give them animations which can take a very very long time (I don't mean 2-3 weeks either).
Creating a HUD should be pretty simple depending on what your making...

yea, i love that mod, if only you can customzie your character on the loading screen or something, its not hard to do really, you just create submodels in a .mdl file and make a large possibilites of clothing and gender and you just have to code the game to switch to the specific submodel that the player chooses.
I think there is a source mod that allows character customization in the VGUI before joining the game.
Cool. Yah, maybe like future wars or something.
