There are a few games I know of that were released for the Xbox 360 that were also released for PC, if I buy one for the PC since I don't have a 360 can I still play online?

Yes. Most games are free online for PC, xbox you have to pay for live.
Unless it's a pay to play game like Final Fantasy XI, or World of Warcraft.
But if it's something like Half-Life, or FEAR, then no, you don't have to pay.
i dont see why you wouldnt be able to play online.
i found a game that i got about 7 years ago, and ive just found it again, and it turns out you can go online on it (and surprisingly enough, there is always a fair amount of people on), so online pc games have been going since way before xbox.
Has L4D got a good community still?
Just don't go to the forums :P Thats where most of the complainers go suggesting stupid ideas...
But yeah, you'll get the occasional game with an A-hole but other than that, it's a great community.
And once this update comes that they've announced for the new Survival mode and the offical SDK, the community will get even better.
