Defragmenting Problem

Lately, everytime I go to defragment my C drive, I get an error message that reads, "Disk defragmentor could not start." Half the time I can't even open the C drive to acces my files, so I had to create a shortcut of it and put it in the D drive. While in the D drive, I happened to notice a folder entitled RECYCLER. A few days later I went to put a song on my MP3 player and it also created a folder called RECYCLER inside my MP3 player! Not sure if the two problems are related, but I believe I am in need of assistance.

I'd suggest you check the drive for errors.

The defragmenting issue is definitely an internal windows problem. Most likely it is your FAT... that sounded really bad, huh.
Your file allocation table can be fixed by running chkdsk/f in a dos prompt.

Try running a diagnostic check for any drive errors, or use a different defragging program like Defraggler, and see if it still gives you errors.

Okay, thanks guys! (Sorry for the delayed response, I forgot I created this thread.) I'm running chkdsk right now, though I don't know what to do after that.

Make sure when you try to defrag (once the drive has been checked for errors) that you have about 15% of free space on the drive.

I'm pretty sure there's more than 15% of space left, but it's still not working. Chkdsk refused to run as well, and now my D drive won't open, either! This is so frustrating...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest buying a new hard drive. You might can get your data off your existing one with a Linux LiveCD - I recommend Knoppix or Kanotix for that. But in my admittedly somewhat limited experience, I'd say your hard disk is going out.
