It depends on what you're going to school for
Art, graphics, engineering(except networking) would pretty much require a Mac
Networking would pretty much require a Sun
Business would pretty much require Windows XP
Anything else you should use Ubuntu.
Both IBM and Dell sell laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled, that way you're assured that you have the right drivers. I've heard the IBM has stopped selling PCs though.
Just stay away from Toshiba and Acer, they are nothing but trouble. Don't go cheap, cheap computers are cheap for a reason. A good computer is something worth investing in.
