Microsoft + Yahoo! vs Google

Seems that things are going through for an alliance between Microsoft and Yahoo!

Both have been loosing ground to Google and they are both hoping that an alliance will get some of their ad revenue back.

They will still use Yahoo!'s web design, but the backend is now going to be Bing! Microsoft's search engine. Bing is about as same power as the Google search algorithm.

Google still has some major advantages though: power. Google has millions of processors handling all of their searches, far more than Microsoft and Yahoo put together. Their algorithm may be the same n order as Bing, but spread over much more processors. In a recent presentation, Google said that every single query uses 1000 processors.

Developers. Google's summer of code takes the best student developers in the world and pumps out experimental code, some works some don't. This makes their R&D cheap and efficient.

Trust. When a small developer comes up with something really great, they will always go to the company with a track record of being fair. Microsoft has screwed people and companies time and time again, either stealing code or buying it for a fraction of what it's worth. This means that new technology goes to Google first.

Yahoo and Microsoft have an advantage over Google though. Marketshare. Windows has over an 80% marketshare, by default IE8 with a default homepage of MSN (which I assume will be changed to Yahoo) is what people first see. Non tech-savy people don't bother upgrading to Chrome or Safari where Google is the default engine.

I think it's the default for every browser that isn't IE.

Finally Microsoft is seeing some real competition. All in all, I hope Google wins over more users and increases its marketshare much more.

It's not really competition, Google absolutely dominates in the field of online revenues.

Well, Bing presents more results, but it doesn't list subpages in an obvious way, it searches similar terms to increase the result count, it doesn't find news articles on the term, and it doesn't offer a link to a definition of the term, so I'm going to stick with google :) Also, the page design and color scheme, etc is awful and distracting! Oh well.

Bing's video search engine wasn't that bad, but the rest of it was pretty crappy.

I go to google for every search however i don't like how they record every keystroke and search and IP.

You do know that no human will ever look at your keystroke or IP, right? It's just sent to a database and recorded by a machine.

Well, they say that it omits clutter in the results and figures out what you are really looking for, that's different from a "search engine," but then Google is a decision engine too because they also do that.

Yes, but the original Google Videos project is dead, and they chose the much more well-regarded name "Youtube" for the merge.

I'll always stand behind Google - they seem so more human. I read a WIRED article, though, about Google becoming a monopoly - not just in search, but in many other areas on the Internet.

To be honest, I'd like it to become / stay a monopoly, if they didn't change what they were doing at all.
