internet issues...blach!
Hey guys, ive been having some really annoying internet problems and I am wondering if any of you have any idea what causes it:
My QOS is like the stock market, (quality of service) it goes from 20% to 98 percent and moves up and down like nuts, I recently had the cable internet guy come by and check it out and he seemed to fix it, but unfortunately hours later the same problem popped up again.
I'm not sure what the problem is but maybe the isp is crappy, cox cable...
I'm supposed to be getting 15 mbps, I usually get 3-6
Im supposed to upload 2-4 mbps...usually it does 1.7mbps up
I bought a brand new router, which helped...but the underlying issue is the quality of service being garbage.
Anyone else had/have this issue before?

It's your cable box, the thing that filters the internet out of the cable. You've got a cheap one and it can't do network recovery if there is a stack problem. Rebooting the box every couple of hours is the only way to fix it.
If you plug your computer directly into the box via ethernet and you don't have this problem, it means it's your wireless router. Cheap routers are a joke and they don't work for shit. A real wireless router runs about $200, I recommend getting one. My landlord had a cheap wireless router and I had the same problem, so I loaned her my Airport Extreme and it hasn't gone down once.

huh?
My router is brand new and 80 bucks, and its not bad, and I don't use wireless connections anyways.
With the cable modem directly connected I get the same problem, its the ISP i am beginning to think.
I am switching isps in a month or so, hopefully that resolves it...I usually get 7-15 mbps down and 2 mbps up which is great but QoS is all retarded.
The cable guy who came said alot of people in my neighborhood have the same problem because of the way the wiring was installed in the outside box on the houses, so he tried to fix the problem only nothing changed after all of his work unfortunately.

You're lucky. I have satellite internet and its only barely better than dialup. 100kbs down is common for me, and 500kbs is almost unheard of.

ouch i feel your pain, but i bet your qos is fine lol
test your connection here:
http://voiptest.8x8.com/
its a java app that tests your upload download qos and voip speed.
my qos was last 68%, last 28% 2 hours before that, then before that 78%....this is pissing me off!
dl 4.65 mbps ul 1.45 mbps....before that 9.1mbpsdown 1.7 up
Its this fluctuation between 3-17 mbps that is dropping my voip calls....and pissing me off grr

My test:
82.7 kbs down
81.4 kbs up
Quality of service: 42%
Jitter: 2569.9 ms, its 20 times more than what is on the chart
Packet Loss 41.0%
MOS score 2.9
You have nothing to complain about unless you are paying an arm and a leg for your internet. I'm paying $50 a month for satellite because the cable company won't reel out an extra 300 feet of cable.
