It's not that simple, because it's different for everyone.
So the best way for you to understand is experience from pracctise.
But an easy explanation just to get thr hang of it:
When you go to sleep at the evening you are far away from the rem-sleep and therefore far away from dreaming. It is possible to WILD here, but t's extremely difficult.
So the best way is to WBTB 6 hours. If you try to WILD immediatelly on the WBTB you will start to become more and more tired as you relax more and more and the body is going to test if you have fall asleep by making you itchy and uncomfortable.
If you move too much the body will not do anything, but if you resist and lay still with a "calm mind" the body will put you in sleep paralysis.
Now your body is paralysed and you might see some images.
(This is were DEILD starts out if you pracctise that)
Listen for weird sound and look for images behind your eyelids, if any of these appears, amplify them by focus more on them.
Dreams are vivid thoughts, so now the thoughts are becoming more and more vivid and if you stay awake and stay focused you will soon find yourself in a dream.
A thought that feels REAL.
