WILD without prior sleep.

Hi,

I started lucid dreaming intentionally last year and love it.
The last few months though I've been pretty busy and haven't really been doing any of the things like reality checks, trying to WILD and keeping a dream journal (I stopped keeping a dream journal before though and it didn't really lower my lucid dream count).
Stoping the other things as well though did lower it pretty drastically.
I was getting at least 3 LDs a week not including linked but after stopping everything was only getting at most 2 a week, usually never any linked and many weren't as realistic as they used to be.

A couple of weeks ago however I tried a WILD, it worked and reminded me how brilliant the feeling of sleep paralysis can be.
I followed that with a LD where I just roll out of my body in bed (they are always the most vivid and realistic lucids for me).
I think these are what some people refer to as Out Of Body Experience's but I believe they're just very vivid Lucids.

The thing is this happened with no prior sleep and when I woke up had only been asleep for 15 minutes.
This has now happened quite a few times just in the last 2 weeks, so I've been reading about WIlDs and pretty much all the posts I've found on the net say that you do not enter REM sleep when you first go to bed until at least after 1 hour, and that if you enter sleep paralysis without prior sleep you will not get lucid.

The lucids I get from this are usually only around 2 to 3 minutes long (so not the longest but not the shortest by any means) and that's after around 2 to 3 minuets of the buzzing, floating sleep paralisis feeling.

In the majority of other posts I've read about this many people are put off trying to WILD and told out right that it wont work without sleeping first.
I now know that not only is this not true, but am finding WILDing much easier doing it this way and think that it should be encouraged.
Not only that but I'm not having to do any of the usual things (Reality Checks, Dream Journal ect.) and still having great success.

It's good to hear this technique working so well for you.

Despite the absolute wording in the posts of many people there is no "you-must-do-this-or-fail" rule to dreaming, as far as anyone can figure out. If there were we would only need a manual instead of a discussion forum.

Most of the material should be treated as a guideline, a sum of averages that works best for the majority of people.

Stick with what works for you. Some people find it easier than others, and that's okay. :)

I'm sorry to say this... but when you have narcolepsy you go straight into rem sleep, meaning performing a WILD straight from being awake would be 99% easier then people who don't have it. You might want to get that checked out but it doesn't mean you do have it.

Yeah I did read something about that but haven't got it.*
I only go straight into REM sleep if I try to WILD, when I don't I just sleep normally.

i have also entered SP and induced a lucid dream through WILD, without prior sleep. I found it pretty easy (except I woke up as soon as I hit lucidity cos I got too excited) it it works, the go with it! Just be thankful you don't have to set alarms and get up in the night :)

It's not that it's not possible. It is. But those dreams and WILDs are happening in NREM, and are of much lesser quality/length and frequency than dreams in REM. If it works for you, great, but you may be an exception from the rule. Many people will be/and are disappointed trying to WILD without prior sleep. Why set yourself up for an almost certain failure, when if you just waited a few hour, you have much better chances. WILD is hard as is, no need to make it close to impossible.

And you say you have had hundreds of LD. That's great. But I would not be telling a noob to start WILDing without prior sleep. Happy dreams:)

I only really put this up because I know most people, especially those who have just started trying to LD want as many ways to get Lucid as possible.
I don't see it as setting yourself up for failure, I mean if it doesn't work you will only fall asleep, then when you wake in a few hours you get to have a second attempt.
Also when I first started LDreaming I found that it's better to try to WILD whilst going to sleep anyway, even if you fail (which is likely at first) because it still gives you much more chance of becoming Lucid later that night, well in my experience anyway.

The quality of these WILDS are very vivid with full consciousness, as I said before the type of LDs some on here call out of body experiences.
The only trouble is the length, most of mine (doing it this way) haven't been over 3 minutes, though I have had a couple around the 10 minute mark.
I've only been doing it this way for a few weeks now though so I'll have to wait and see if I can get them any longer, or if most are restricted to just a few minutes.

If as you say though I am an exception to the rule, then there'll be others ; )

Anyway, if you did get one of these 'lesser' LDs, you could just chain into a better quality dream as the night goes on

This is the problem. The entire experience, from start to finish only lasted 15 minutes, and the lucid only lasted 2 or 3? Why bother, when you can do the same thing at 4:30am, and have an hour long lucid dream? You can dream outside of REM, and you do actually get a short REM cycle early in the night. It is just very short, hard to catch, and harder to get fully immersed.

Most people who WILD in the early night report getting to hypnagogia, hallucinations, sleep paralysis, ect, then having no dreams. They think they did something wrong, when they actually succeeded. They just had the timing wrong.

Obviously, any lucid dream is a good lucid dream. Two minutes of dreaming is better than none, and you get to experience all the fun hypnagogia. Millions of people meditate without ever seeking a dream state, so the experience itself is totally worthwhile. If your goal is a lucid dream, however, your best chances are after a few hours of sleep.
