This is a weird one.
When attempting to WILD the last 2 or 3 times, I have got very close. However both times (before entering SP, but perhaps just as entering) my eyes dart back and forth.
I guess this is normal due to REM, BUT... my mouth has been going crazy too! Like twitching and shaking, like its talking at super fast speed (but not wide enough / pronounced enough to be talking) it doesn't hurt or scare me, but it does make me go WTF??!! And so I wake up.

This happens during N1 sleep, slipping from awareness into a sleep mode. It's NREM, not REM.
Not sure about the mouth...not something I hear reported often. You might try lying on your side with your face against the pillow, see if changing your position helps. If you're already doing that...not sure what to try.
Might be a simple nerve becoming activated...I wonder if some bananas/potassium might help.
It's a long shot but try anything. :-?
maybe your mouth is tensed up. sometimes when I have a muscle tense without knowing it, it will start twitching.
the first time i tried to WILD it felt like my eyelids were moving side to side relly fast it freaked me out :holycrap:
