Will DEILD work even if you don't wake up directly from a dream
and how do really know you just woke up from a REM period?
And also, when I have a LD, how can I make sure that I wake up afterwards, so I can use DEILD to reenter into my dream?

Well, personally I've never had a DEILD, but I think this is how it works. You can only perform a DEILD after you wake up from a dream, that is why it is called a Dream Exit Induced Lucid Dream. You train yourself to not move after you wake up and keep your eyes closed and everything in the exact position. Supposedly if you can do that you will go back into another dream in a very short period of time. That is just what I think, so I'll be looking to see if someone has a more "official" answer.
On my last (and first) DEILD I didn't remember a dream before,
so my guess was that I didn't wake up form a REM.
You could have simply forgotten it. You don't have to remember the previous dream in order to DEILD. All you need to do is be able to wake up at the beginning or during a REM period and then quickly return to sleep. I don't normally remember my previous dream when I DEILD because as soon as I wake up I'm anticipating the next dream.
Experience will tell you the difference between waking up during REM and waking up after. You will feel different. If you wake up naturally during the night it's most likely after REM since we always wake up after a REM period. If you wake up naturally during REM it's usually because something in the dream caused you to get overexcited and woke you up. Or some outside source caused you to wake up, like a flash of light or an alarm.
So to learn the difference between the two pay close attention to how you feel during your awakenings. A good indicator for me is how strong the hypnagogic imagery is. If I wake up and there is no apparent imagery I know I've woken up after REM so when I return to sleep I'm going to have to go into NREM first making it a bad time for DEILD. If I wake up and see imagery right away then I am still in a REM period and a DEILD is almost guaranteed.
^what he said. I actually DEILD'ed this morning.i remembered the previous dream too, actually. It must depend on the perso. And how much you want to remember it. On reason I di. Is because I was still trying to complete the TotM, and I was still in the same place. That's what happens when i DEILD,i end up in the same place.
I also DEILDed today - only after a lucid dream.
So how does it work that you 'prolong' your REM?
And shouldn't this be possible when you wake up right after a REM?
Dream Exit Induced Lucid Dreaming is just that... when you awaken from a dream in the middle of the night. It works best if you can remember the dream you just had as it is fresh in your mind and incorporated images that can easily be visualized. Is remembering your dream required? Let me put it this way... when has a dream awakened you in the middle of the night where you did not remember the dream at least for a few seconds?
So I woke up from a dream this morning and I lied perfectly still for a few minutes and nothing happened... what did I do wrong?
@faceonmars:
I would not be able to tell if I didn't remember the dream :P
DEILD can be used even in a current dream you are in and you continue into a different scene while walking towards a door or just fading and re-fading into another dream.
What i think is you are talking about WTBTB (wake then back to bed), it takes practice and lots of awareness to do it, but you can't always do it, only sometimes.
If you use a mantra to wake up you will almost always wake up during a rem period, if you are using an alarm you might not, but it doesn't really matter because you will probably just fall asleep if you don't enter a lucid.
If you keep up awareness and a stable lucid dream you will eventually notice waking up, when this happens if you go through with it and expect to wake up, you will. From that point on you can DEILD back into a dream.
But will I always wake up from a LD?
And how can I make sure I do?
Because a lot of people say 'you should have good recall, otherwise you have a LD and dont remember it' ...
