Listening to music While trying to WILD??

So I have not had my first LD yet, and I have been trying to WILD for the past week. I've tried waking myself up at night, I've tried WILDing before I go to sleep, but I fall asleep every time. What is your guys' opinion on listening to music(with or without earphones) while WILDing? Will it help me focus, or will it only make me fall asleep faster? I'd really appreciate any tips you guys have. Thanks,
      -dragster

Firstly, WILDing before you go to sleep isn't likely to work at all (and even if it did, you'd only get 5 minutes). 5 or 6 hours after you first go to sleep is best. As for music, it varies. Some find it helps keep them aware, others find its too distracting. It could help though, so try it out. Finally, WILDing can take a decent bit of practice, so don't get too down after only a week. You could also try DILD, which some argue is easier.

Why 5-6 hours? I get the whole waking yourself up during an REM cycle thing, but, if you are able to relax enough, wouldn't WILDing before you go to bed be just as sufficient as waking yourself up??

I don't know that much about the sleep cycles but I've read a lot on this forum that you go into other cycles of sleep early in night (not REM). I have WILD'd at the beginning of the night and it happened very similarly to what splodeymissile said. I was only in a REM dream world for a couple minutes before I either lost awareness or it turned into some really weird nREM stuff. And I'm not very fond of being aware during nREM cycles. The one time that I was able to have a long lucid dream right away (when first going to bed), I had taken a nap earlier in the day in which I went into a deep sleep for a few hours.
