The most important thing is to know what you are attempting. That is that you are attempting to FALL ASLEEP and stay aware. Too many beginners do not realize they MUST fall asleep.
You may end up in normal sleep with no LD, but failing to sleep is the worst type of failure. You can hold off sleep because you know you are loosing awareness, but do not forget that the goal involves sleeping.
The next big tip is hat we call WBTB wake, back to bed. It just works much better if you have had about 5-8 hours sleep, woken up, and then attempted WILD. So, you try to WILD in the middle of the night, not at the beginning.
Next, use an anchor to stay aware. That is anything that takes little attention and barely engages your mind. If you fantasize or think about your home work, it keeps you awake. If you do not engage your mind you will loose awareness. The trick is to find a mental task that keeps you barely aware. Common tasks used as anchors are repeating a short phrase in your mind, or counting (do not try to keep track, just keep starting over).
Those are the biggest issues, as I see them. Perhaps other members can offer a few more.
