A WILD almost never occurs naturally without any willful interception. During the natural wake-to-sleep transition, the brain induces unconsciousness before the body begins to enter sleep paralysis and fall asleep. The WILD method aims to willfully keep conscious awareness while your body falls asleep; something that doesn't occur naturally.
WILDs can occur naturally, but very rarely. For example, if you're falling asleep normally and have lost consciousness, and all of a sudden feel "jolted" awake by the onset of SP (you may all of a sudden regain consciousness and feel as though you're "falling off" or "falling through" your bed), then you may enter into a WILD, but usually this shock will cause you to move, thus exiting SP and the wake-to-sleep process altogether.
That's not the way it happened for me. I was laying, facing the wall, and at some point noticed that my hypnagogic imagery was unusually vivid, and it was eventually clear enough that I could take control of my perspective. It was fantastic.
Very interesting. That's definitely rare, but if this happens for you naturally then that's amazing! It would certainly be something to take advantage of.
its naturally happened to me about 3 times. the circumstances were me not having much sleep then being up for a couple hours and then just crashing for a nap and i was overcome by sleep paralysis.
I know that Narcolepsy can cause people to see hypnagogic imagery when going to sleep but i think you would have to make a conscious effort to keep yourself aware and not simply fall asleep even tough you could see the initial onset of sleep phenomena. Not sure if there is an exception to it tough where you would enter a LD spontaneously after that stage.
