It's perfectly fine to have the friend ask the girl if she is interested in you as well... but if you don't have the balls to ask her out then you don't deserve to go out with her.

How old are you?
I can understand someone 16 and under doing this but anyone older, well, it's just awkward and the girl might just turn you do because of that.
