What SP feels like: the explanation.

Hello everybody!!

I have seen multiple questions asked on the forums about SP (sleep paralysis). Including but not limited to "does sleep paralysis hurt?", "I'm scared of sleep paralysis", "what are the HI like during sleep paralysis?".

I'm hoping to cover these and many other topics on SP during this post.

Now the first question "how do you get into sleep paralysis?"

Well the most basic answer to this I's to lay still for a periode of time without moving, it also helps to have your eyes closed, just remember to stay awake.

Second "how long does it take to get into sleep paralysis?"

For most people it takes anywhere from 5-60 minutes to achieve sleep paralysis. For me when I am just going to sleep it takes me about 10 minutes to get into sleep paralysis; but when using WBTB it only takes about 5-8 minutes.

Third "what I's sleep paralysis?"

To put it simply sleep paralysis I's what happens to just about everybody during sleep. What I't does I's paralize you while you dream so you don't act them out.

Sleep paralysis I's not really used for WILD so much as it goes along with it.

Fourth "I's sleep paralysis scary?"

This I's differient for everybody, for me all I get I's vibrations, numbness, and parts of my body feeling cold, I also get insane urges to move.

Others report scary visuals, noises like people yelling. To overcome this just lay back and remember that you cant be hurt. If it gets to intense try wiggling your fingers, then arms, then shoulders, and work your way from there.

Fifth "does sleep paralysis hurt?"

I have never seen any reports of sleep paralysis "hurting" although there are a lot of reports of being uncomfortable, itching, coldness. Of you are wanting to obtain sleep paralysis do not worry about being I'n pain.

Sixth "what I's HH and what I's it like?"

HH stands for hypnogenic hallucinations. They are sights or sounds during sleep paralysis.

I never get HH except right before the transition into a dream unless I'm performing a DEILD, then I see flickering lights and shadows.

Most people see differient colors of blobs that start to form pictures and eventually form a dream.

The sounds people hear I's beeping, swooshing, and sometimes people talking.

Seventh "what does Sleep paralysis feel like?"

This should be one of the first questions I should have answered.

For me sleep paralysis contains slight spinning movements, vibrations, numbness, coldness, and faint ringing I'n the ears.

Other people report the feeling of acceleration, spinning, dizziness, lights, colors, noises of people talking, beeping, buzzing, heart beating fast, being uncomfortable, and wanting to roll over.

Eighth "why would you want to achieve sleep paralysis?"

You really don't "want" to hit sleep paralysis, but if your trying to WILD then it shows that your on the right track. If after about an hour of laying there you feel no SP then maybe you should change up your technique.

NOTE NOT EVERYBODY FEELS SP WHEN WILDing.

My problem is that I'm a coward. I've managed to get very close to sleep paralysis a couple of times, but I'm always afraid something scary will happen so I give up!
I need to overcome my fears!

Great FAQ I have hit SP four times on accident, two of the times the only fear I had was that I couldn't move, but nothing happened :p The other two times I felt things (my cousin jumping on my bed which wasnt bad and a snake that really freaked me out lol) I've been lucky to have not been scared ****less :p

P.S. What is up with your "is"s and "it's" :p

This thread I's more about SP, maybe I'll post a WILD tut once I get better at it. Although I do think there I's enough already.

hi i am new to this sight. i experience sleep paralysis on a regular basis ive seen figures in my room at the bottom of my bed, felt like i have been violated in an extremely inapproprite way, felt like i am being dragged my my feet around my room and house, and imagined the figure of a dead relative im my room as well. after an expisode i struggle to sleep normally for days after. I no i shudnt panic when this happenes but bleieve me it is hard not to when you enter sleep paralysis unwilling. I am just wondering has anyone got any tips to try and make these awful experiences less frighning because although sleep parlysis scares the hell out of me it also fascinates me beyond belief as well!!!

Haha, it is is. Not I's and not I't or I'f or w/e. Just I'm because that's short for I am. Or it's, which is short for, it is. ;-)

I've had sleep paralysis only once, it happened before I knew what it was, so it was pretty scary...
Now I know what it is, I really want it to happen again!
I did have small moments where I felt similar sensations on my body and even similar visuals but not nearly as real and strong as the SP even though I really thought I was awake again.

My brother have had similar experiences as yours on a regular basis for years. Such as, laying beside his bed stuck on the ground. Along with it he he told me he had trouble with breathing, like feeling short on breath. After a few days I was in his room while he was sleeping and I heard him breathing very heavily so I woke him up and told him that and he didn't know it. But he went back to sleep and I went to bed as well a bit later. The next day we talked a little and I told him when he gets it he should just relax and calm down and breath in slowly instead of taking full heavy breaths. He hasn't had any trouble with breathing, sp, or nightmares ever since.

I have experienced SP quiet a few times weather intentional or unintentional, I am not scared of it as I know I can snap out of it. It takes a little less then two minutes to snap out of it but it works. I have never experienced anything scary during SP. One time I almost felt like I am being electrocuted during SP one time and I was going to go into a astral projection. I took control and it stopped but I never experienced that again, I can wake myself up from a dream if lucid.

That one unusual experience with SP I couldn't explain. Best thing to do is remain clam and go with it or slowly try to move parts of your body so your body "knows" that you're no longer sleeping.

SP is much like being outside, you can sneak outside and no one sees you and locks the door to the inside. All you have to do to get there attention is knock on the door or make some racket to make them know your outside and let you in.

For some reason my iPad makes is, I's. It's really annoying.

Don't tell someone with more experience that they are wrong, even AFTER they experienced it.

believe me guys when you experience sp u will def no you are experiencing it its a very unique experience unlike any other ive known.

How come you always have a chip on your shoulder Jay? I've seen multiple posts where you attack people, it isn't very becoming of you. I think it's a pretty good explanation of SP. I do think Dakotahnok should delete all the unnecessary apostrophes though. :)
When I experience SP I would hear foot steps, and have HI of scenes and random people. I only experienced SP for my first few WILDs; I barely notice it now, as soon as it hits I transition into a dream.

For me, SP feels like...well, imagine that your foot just fell asleep. You know that nice tingly feeling that you get when the blood starts to flow through it and it starts to "wake up"? That feeling surrounds my body when entering sleep paralysis.

I agree. Except I don't have a "nice" tingly feeling when my foot wakes up from being asleep. I would describe it more as uncomfortably tingly. Same with SP. It's a pretty intense feeling. Not just "numbness" as I hear people so often describe it.

To me it's nice! Eh, each to their own. I like the feeling of it.

To me it feels like when the limb is still asleep rather than waking up. When the limb starts to wake up it kinda hurts; when it's still sleep it feels nice n tingly.

Thanks, I would like to add that SP I's different for everyone, what I posted was just the general feeling of SP.

I experience the same things you do. The numbness and vibrations and feeling cold, none are sleep paralysis.

I shouldn't have to explain this, but sleep paralysis is basically being awake during REM atonia (their definition of REM atonia is shotty too). This means that your body is PARALYZED (you don't have urges to move, you CANNOT move) and you will be hallucinating in some way nearly 100 percent of the time (because you are in REM). The second biggest flaw in this guide is the way you instruct people to go about inducing this. Pre sleep is a necessity meaning it is not optional for 99 percent of people who try to achieve sleep paralysis like this, a very large majority of these people will fail. Staying up very late one night, getting up early, excercising during the day, taking a nap between 6 and 9 pm that day, waking up naturally after this nap, and then inducing 1-3 hours afterwords is optimal. If you'd like good instruction on how to achieve the real sleep paralysis, PM me. I've refferenced the video too many times on these forums.

What you're getting is not sleep paralysis, it's what a majority of the people on this site think is sleep paralysis. You should have no trouble at all entering a dream from sleep paralysis because you're already in one. I've experienced everything the OP described and trust me, that's not it.

First off I never instruct people to attempt to reach SP before sleep, however it IS possible. People have actually succeeded in WILD pre sleep. So don't come in here calling my information false and then giving false information.

Second sleep paralysis is different for a lot of people. Some do not feel the effects at all.

Third there are stages of SP. I dont think that there named but it's not just BAM and your in SP.

Fourth it's kind of funny how you come in here and say that the majority of this site is wrong and your right. Especially sense your the new person.

I joined in 2009 but when I moved to Oklahoma I was not active and I forgot my log in information.

No. Im not that great a WILDing. But with my many attempts I get plenty of SP. Also I have had about 10 cases of natural SP, along with many DEILDs which has SP with it.

I didn't even notice you were from Oklahoma! I thought I was the only Okie on the forums! I'm jealous of your 10 natural SPs. My friend told me about when he had it once and it scared the shit out of him. I wish I had experienced it, before I knew what it was, and got the shit scared outta me.:(

I know it's possible, for very few people. I said that in my first post. It's more chronic in people who fear it, that's when it happens more often. Obviously, if you have an irregular sleep schedule or are stressed (don't forget a combination of both of these) leads to a higher chance of (real) sleep paralysis. The people who 'suffer' from it, or that it happens very often to are probably able to do this but then again they probably don't want it. For the rest of us, there's naps

How many times have you conciously entered a dream from sleep paralysis? (meaning there was no lapse of time from waking to sleep)

I've never felt SP, and I've never WILD'ed. Good to get an insight on what it would feel like.

how many dreams have you entered from sleep paralysis without a time lapse? Answer me this and you'll (win?)

You've never experienced the weight on the chest or hallucinations? That's not sleep paralysis, I know it's not. You can get the numbness and vibrating by listening to delta-wave binaural beats. you won't get a lucid dream, but you'll get your definition of sleep paralysis 100% of the time.

Simply go to Yahoo Answers and type in sleep paralysis. You'll get many first hand accounts of people's true experience with it and how unpleasant it was for them (not saying it's terrible for everyone but a large majority it is). Read their experiences and compare them to your guide. After about ten you'll see what I mean.

You refer to all the people who had a negative experience with SP. Did you stop to ask yourself why? I bet 9 out of 10 of those very people didn't know what in the hell was going on when it happened. I happen to be one of the majority who gets SP spontaneously and frequently. I happen to be one of the majority who AT FIRST felt it was a terrible, negative experience. But I am more experienced now and I know that it can't hurt or injure me and so I'm over the fear associated with SP. Ok, the voices I hear sometimes freak me out still... but I think that's to be expected.

As far as my SP is concerned. It ALWAYS involves (edited from involved/past tense to involves) vibrations. That is the only one stable thing.

I also frequently hear ringing or buzzing in my ears. I would say at least 85% of the time during SP I hear voices - not always clearly, often muffled. I have felt strange creatures straddle my back and clamp down tighter each time I got more fearful and scared. I have felt someone or something pinch me during SP, play with my hair, breath heavily (heard as well as felt) on my face. I have felt like I was sinking into my bed - it's a feeling as though you are SUPER-DUPER BEYOND WORDS RELAXED HEAD TO TOE that you just become one with your bed and sink in. SP has lead me to OBE on at least 20 occasions, maybe more.

Now are you going to try to tell me that I'm also not correct in my experiences? Go ahead. I know what I know. And I can respect your experience, can you respect mine? :panic:

I mentioned the people who have negative experiences (like when I referred to yahoo answers) because most people do have negative experiences. I said after that that not all people do. Sometimes the terrible things can be easiest to recall in detail. I don't disagree with you, the people who fear it don't know exactly what it is.

His experience wasn't different from my own. I had the same things he described happen to me on multiple occasions, but none were sleep paralysis.

I'm very glad you mentioned this. This is genuine sleep paralysis. Separation from sleep paralysis to an OBE/lucid dream should be a snap. But can I ask, are you stressed out/ do you take naps often?

Okay, you asked about stress-levels. Do you mean currently or do you mean when the SP and OBE's began?

I was about 20 years old when the began and am 34 now so it's been a LONG time. I actually used to feel myself peel out of my body - freaky. Now I just end up out after the SP sets in. Sometimes, actually MOST OF THE TIME, I'm not even sure if I'm "REALLY" out or if it's just a different kind of awakening... like a separation between my body and brain, like it's just a heightened awareness/consciousness. I don't even know if any of that makes sense...

As far as stress goes... who doesn't have stress, really? I'd love to meet someone that is able to keep stress at bay and LEARN FROM THEM. Haha.
Yes, I am stressed. But the past 2 years have been EXTREMELY stressful for anyone who works in public education. They continue to increase class size, lay off teachers, etc. etc. There's an emergency board meeting tonight in fact, they just called it last night. They are discussing eliminating school counselors (sure, we don't have any crazy kids with issues, why not? BLAH), librarians (kids don't need to read at school! new kids don't need to be issued text books. PLEASE), and closing FIVE schools and thus eliminating 5 administrators. They already crammed 25 kids in classes two years ago. This year it increased to 30. I guess next year we're looking at 40? I mean how do you close FIVE schools? You've gotta put the kids somewhere. So yeah, I'd say I'm a tad stressed. LOL.

Have I been overly stressed since the age of 20? No. I loved college. Are you kidding!? Oh to be debt-free, job-free, kid-less, etc. again..... LOL. I really have NO IDEA what started the experiences for me. There was nothing significant going on in my life at the time.

You'd think since it's been 14 years that I would be a pro and have it all figured out, huh? Not the case. The SP and OBE's still happen OUT OF THE BLUE. Totally spontaneous. I have no control over when or where. But the one thing I do KNOW is that the experiences are REAL. The voices I hear are not hallucinations. I am convinced that they are spirits. I have had a shared experience with my husband where there was no way he could have known I was being bothered by a woman at night. I laid there thinking it was made up in my mind, but then he woke up and told me about her! WHOA!! I could NOT have made that up. Awesome validation.

I shouldn't have to explain this, but sleep paralysis is basically being awake during REM atonia (their definition of REM atonia is shotty too). What you're getting is not sleep paralysis, it's what a majority of the people on this site think is sleep paralysis. You should have no trouble at all entering a dream from sleep paralysis because you're already in one. I've experienced everything the OP described and trust me, that's not it.

If this is true, then what are we getting into? I felt vibrations, heart beat fast, etc.. then what is this supposed to be? Maybe there is just different types of SP? I have actually been in SP, I was stuck inside a tremor of some sort.. not exactly sure because this was long time ago.

I have no idea. I've gotten into the state described many times, and it's pretty much just pointless vibrating. You can get the same feeling by listening to delta-wave binaural beats. I thought I was onto something when I first experienced these but they led to no results.

There may be different types, but the main requirement is paralysis. Ask yourself, could you move if you wanted to?

That is stated perfectly... "It's like being awake during REM..." You mind is fully awake and aware! As I stated before you can even often hear what is REALLY going on in REAL TIME in the ROOM you are in. Like when I heard my alarm clock go off, my husband get up, go downstairs, and come back to tell me to get up.

During SP you have to exert a lot of focus and control to move your physical body. Wiggling my toes and/or fingers can take what feels like minutes sometimes although I must admit I've gotten better at it as the years have gone on... it's my safety net.... I know if I move my body I will snap out of the vibrations and SP or even OBE.

Sometimes you THINK you're not in SP because you can feel yourself moving. Quite confusing sometimes. LOL. Once, for instance, I felt myself rubbing what felt like a rock between my fingers. When I realized I couldn't have been... where would I have gotten it? Why would I have it? I started to realize I was "out of my body." When I snapped back in, I realized that my hand was under the pillow and under my head! It wasn't where I had felt it. I had NOTHING in my hand. Sure felt "REAL."
