Yes turn the alarm off when it starts. I hope you used the Full mode and left the phone on your bed xD And I just want to say that I don't claim this to work for everyone , I am just saying that it worked for me and I hope that i work for others : )

Has anyone ever tried using one of these apps that record movements when they sleep in a bed with someone else? I'm just not sure it's going to work with my man next to me snoring away tossing and turning.
The app would not be able to distinguish between your motions and someone else's motions

But the main purpose of this "method" is to find the best time and opportunity to pracctise lucid dreaming. And this app helped me, but in your case the best way is probably the normal way of just trying to find the sweet spot to WBTB.
Try just to WBTB and see if you get lucid dreams, because WBTBs are still allways good. If you are too tired when you WBTB you should sleep longer and if you are to alert you should set the alarm to wake you up earlier. But start out with a 6 hour WBTB.
And if you alarm disturbs others you, this might be a solution:
I use a pillow with a built in speaker so the alarm only awakes me (when I am using alarm sound). So that's something to consider :)

Hey you should not try this because I recommend it or not, you should try it because you are currious and want to learn something new, which it seems like you are.
I realize now that REM doesn't even needs to be found, after waking up in a morning it is always possible to transition if you just direct your awarenes to the non-physical.
After a while it gets intuitive. this morning I woke up and imagined myself holding a bottle and tightening my grip until I suddenly could feel it and I jumped up into the air and started to fly.
Snoozing from an alarm in the later morning have been effective for me and even my parents who don't even practise lucid dreaming, you just wake up hit the snooze button and fall back to sleep with the intention of becoming aware.
So yes I would still recommend to use this however I suggest that you don't put as much focus onto REM being a necessity for lucid dreaming, because then you are limiting yourself.

My honest opinion about this today, is that it would not be this easy for an app to see if you are in REM, and well with this other theory luckily for us, it doesn't really matter.
Combine this knowledge with this method and you might learn a few things.

Years ago I purchased the "REMdreamer"- a cheaper version of the well known NOVAdreamer. I actually gave it to a Dreamviews member. It functions by detecting your eye movement through a sleep mask, flashing lights and beeping when you're in REM. You're right, if nothing else, if you can figure out how to use these various devices/applications to become more familiar with your REM sleep patterns, you can use that knowledge to your advantage for future attempts.
While the application itself is a tool, by waking at the right times, you can set yourself up for a perfect WILD. Like you stated, an alarm clock alone, with carefully timed "snoozes" can allow you a quick WILD/DEILD.
When I say the app didn't work at all I mean it didn't register or record any of my movements and therefore failed to identify my patterns of REM sleep. It sounds like an interesting app to have but I don't want to pay for something that doesn't work. Could've been an issue with my phone or that particular app though so that's why I was curious.
I have the Zeo headband that uses a smartphone (Android in my case) to monitor your sleep cycles. It's very accurate at determining when you are in REM.
I's actually a single channel EEG, so it monitors your brain activity using elctrodes.
I also use the ZILD app from Ampage, which looks at the Zeo sleep data and allows you to set alarm triggers according to the timings of your REM episodes. It can flash or vibrate the phone.
I find that I naturally wake at the end of a REM peiod without this tech, but with it, it does allow me to wake early on in the REM episode. The only problem is I still can't seem to WILD after waking!
I gave up on using the ZEO+ZILD for a while, just because it wasn't working for me. I've been trying DILD, and SSILD, but still can't quite get it.
I have had 5 very brief LDs over the past year of trying.
Of course ZEO have gone bust so you can't get the headband any more, but it definitely works in terms of monitoring sleep cycles.
I've also tried the "Lucid Dreaming APP" from Alexander Stone. That's an actigraphy app for android. It works very well in fact, but is a bit buggy for some platforms.
It's a pity he no longer supports it. It could be brilliant if polished.
I found it worked in a believeable way even though I sleep alongside my partner. I think that is because it uses a combination of movement and sound.
There is another iPhone app "DreamZ" that is designed to give you audio and/or light cues in REM phase so that they bleed into your dream and induce a DILD, seems like not many people has had a huge sucess with it, but I guess one could get the volume high enough to wake you up and try to DEILD. I have a bed partner who would kill me if I start trying sounds and lights in the middle of the night, besides I believe these apps are not so precise on shared beds, but I thought I could mention this here just in case it helps your tests. Maybe I can take a chance too.
Oh, and there is another expensive, difficult-to-use app who his specifically design for DEILDing, it's "Singularity experience" or something similar.
