A simple voice from headphones to induce lucidity?

Hello, I'm sort of new here and just finished my first post in the introduction subforum. Not new to lucid dreaming though. Read my introduction if you want to know more :)

I figured I'd come here to share an idea that I have for inducing lucidity. This kind of belongs to the WILD section, and then kind of to the lucid aids section, but whatever, I'll just post it here. This might be an old idea that's been posted a thousand times.

I really like WILDing. The only problem is, I suck at it, and I only get WILDs when I lay on the bed in the late morning halfway woken up, don't move, and my body takes me to a sleep paralysis and momentarily into a light dream. But these are usually reaaally crap, because I'm in very light sleep when that happens. So for me it's pretty easy to go to sleep paralysis if I wake up tired and stay still. If I get up and try to focus my intention and then go back to bed, I fail 99% of the time.

So, we get to my WILDing method.

What if I actually made a sound file, that 1. wakes me up, and 2. reminds me to stay still and do a WILD. Something like three loud beeps followed by my own voice telling myself to stay still and fall into sleep paralysis and then go to a lucid. At first this might make jolt or something, but after getting used to this, I think it might be absolutely awesome. I'll try it tomorrow morning. I'll wake up for a short WBTB, and set the sound to come at a time when I'm certain I will have fallen asleep.

What do you guys think? Has anyone tried anything similar?

Hi, Markus! I really like your idea. It would need to be on a timer so it would go off near the end of a REM cycle (or perhaps in the middle of one) and then be able to shut off on its own. Really, though, I think what you're talking about is DEILD. WILD usually occurs when you've been fully wakened, and are trying to reenter. Really just words and definitions, though WILDing is more difficult.

I know that people often use alarms that automatically shut off in order to facilitate DEILDing. I think one with your own voice telling you to be quiet and still would be great. If it's quiet enough, it might simply carry over into your dream and prompt you into lucidity. Tell us how it works!

I usually do not encounter any vibrations or REM atonia during DEILD, though--I just sit and wait for the good stuff :)

Oh yeah, had forgotten about DEILDing alltogether. I'll try it out in the morning and report the results afterwards. I made the sound file, now i just need to figure how I make my buds not fall off my ears when rolling in bed.

If this ends up working well for you, you might want to look into getting some sleep-phones. They are sort of like a fleecy headband with speakers built in. They look pretty comfortable, and supposedly you can sleep on your side :)

Day 1:
I woke up in a bad spot and wasn't feeling that tired at all. I taped the phones to my head and then tried to sleep, but because I was so awake, and excited from my test, I couldn't get back to sleep. I woke up after about 5hrs of sleep last night, I know that if I wake up after more like 7hrs, I'll be alot more tired.
What comes to being prepared to the sound, that's no problem. When I woke up to my alarm, I thought at first that it was the induction sound, and stayed still. So when the real thing rings, I should act similar.

So yeah, tonight I'll sleep longer before the WBTB, stay up shorter, and dim my room a bit better. Success is close!

Day 2:
The exactly same thing happened. I just can't go back to sleep in the morning when I'm having those phones on. So next time I'll put them on when I initially go to bed, and set the sound to go off in something like 7 hours. So I'll try skipping the WBTB part.

Keep up the good work, Markus! Are you using any techniques (besides WBTB) along with this?

This could work, and if you dont feel like making it yourself i can almost guarantee someone else has done it :)

Some time ago I tried to play some self-made mp3 files in order to help me attain lucidity. The first days my excitement used to screw things a little due to I wasn't able to go back to sleep so easily and couldn't fit on my programmed schedule. After some days, I was able to calm down and let my sleep pattern naturally flow, I was able to induce the sounds into the dreams although I didn't notice them :lol:. Unfortunately I didn't have much time to work on it, so I let that project in stand by.
To avoid wearing things on my head, I attached the earphones to the sides of my bedhead and set the volume at an acceptable level, during night you won't need too much volume anyway. I think if it's a pair of small speakers it could work better. I would suggest to regulate the volume level of your sounds turning them at the minimum. If they are too loud, they could wake you up too much and you could have problems going back to sleep. Anyway, I think you're on the right path, just try stop thinking too much in the results and let your body naturally go back to sleep.

I have SleepPhones and they are super comfortable! And yes, sleeping on your side is no problem at all. I would definitely recommend them for anyone using audio cues. I've seen cheaper versions available online too, which I assume would be similar.

Where I lived back then, it was a little bit difficult to get those devices. I even used a single mp3 player with a long time of battery autonomy, and created a list of empty files of around 10 min each in order to play the particular file at a particular time. It was a bit tedious to program the schedule, but at the end I was able to synchronize it with my sleep pattern. Long after that I got my USB mp3 alarm clock which worked better although consumed too much energy. Now I think there are a lot of app's for iphones, etc. that fit into the needs for these sort of projects, I find it really interesting how things have change in just a couple of years. I like those SleepPhones by the way, it's like wearing a nightcap. Are they still comfortable during summer?

On the other hand, I think my main problem with audio files, was when I knew them (self-made or not), I paid too much attention to them and consequently I woke up too much. I don't know how to put some randomness in order to avoid expecting what's coming next, perhaps that would help to break the attention on them.

One more thing. Wouldn't be it enough by using single signals in stead of complex audio files?

Cool! I as of now do not use audio cues, but that is partly because headphones are uncomfortable. Do you use audio cues, Dreamer? If so, how well do you feel they work?
