How exactly is this technique supposed to work?

I heard this technique from a friend, and I think I read about it online some time ago as well, but never found any reason why or how it would trigger lucidity. It basically consists of "pretending" that you are in a lucid dream, throughout the day, for as long as possible. Pretending you "know" this is a dream, but you're just choosing to not take control over it.
How exactly is this supposed to trigger lucidity? Is it not likely that if you practice this technique for a while, then when you're really in a dream you're going to do nothing because you think you're still "pretending" and choosing to not take control?

I have honestly never heard of such a thing. If anything, doing this would further prevent your chances of having a lucid because you are training your mind NOT to take action.

Precisely..

In my early LDing days i have practiced this extensively and in my case it was like a subliminal thing. Sometimes, while i was doing it i felt like i really was going to LDream that night. It was a feeling from inside, but whenever i had it i always had a lucid dream that night. If i remember correctly, the way i did it was to simulate multiple times that i was becoming lucid in waking life. So i cultivated awe and curiosity which i believe to be key for LDing

It could work if you combine it with some RCing, or mental dream control. For example, you are pretending you are dreaming and you try to TK. If this happens in a dream and your action succeeds, it may result in a shock that triggers lucidity.

This technique is in "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" He calls it the Power of Resolution technique.

The point of the technique to remember or remind yourself that your dreaming while your dreaming. So, this is basically a variation of the MILD technique.

It could work, but only with lots of effort, similar to ADA.
