According to A dream book I read:
When you are deprived or lack sleep, your brain/body makes up (first) for lost REM sleep/stage. So if you wake up 4.5 hours after falling asleep....and intend on being lucid and keep telling yourself 'the next time i am in a dream i will know i am asleep (and control it)' -- It should work the best if you can do it...but be awake enough (5-15min) so you fall alseep almost instantaneously after CLOSING your eyes - keep them awake for at least 5minutes or so.....
I can also see how this will work when/if you interrupt it 'half-way'
