I always start gulping when Im trying to WILD?

hey guys, just two quick questions. when im WILDing, during the transitional phase, when i feel the strong vibrating sensation taking over me, i start gulping. this is so annoying, cuz it sort of pulls me back into the waking state. it has happened so many times. i just intuitively know that im so close to entering my dream, but then, i goddamn gulp everytime!! any advices??
my other question is that do u have to be in sleep paralysis before u can feel the sensations while transitioning into the dream state. i ask this cuz, a lot of times, i feel my body vibrate, and i know i'm about to enter the dream state; however, i'm also conscious of the fact that im not paralyzed yet. i've read at places saying that body needs to be paralyzed before the transition, so...any suggestions on that? :?

I have the same problem sometimes. The only way I can think of to get around that is to not think about swallowing. Even if you say to yourself, "Hey, I'm not swallowing at the moment!", you most likely will.

I don't think you have to be paralysed before transitioning, although I'm not sure. I'm hardly an expert at WILD, so maybe someone else can fill you in on that. :)

hey, thanks for the reply. ur the first one..lol. anyways, i was reading someplace else, and i just found this out today, that to prevent the saliva from gathering in ur mouth, u should keep ur tongue on the roof of ur mouth. i didnt get a chance to try it yet, so im gonna try it tonight. hopefully it works. so u too should give it a shot. best of luck to both of us:happyface:

From experience, don't worry about swallowing. When you need to swallow, swallow. It doesn't make that much of a deal. Just try to forget about it and it'll stop.

Agreed. LET yourself swallow. There's not good reason to waste concentration trying not to. Go for your life.

thanks C°°, and james, i guess u guys are right. cuz it does waste a lot of concentration in trying not to swallow. so ill try that, and just swallow the next time. i appreciate the advice :)

I've also experienced this problem, so it must be fairly common.

Many a good projection was ruined (for me), because I felt this INTENSE need to swallow, I'm not sure why, but the harder I tried to swallow, the more impossible it seemed.

I also experienced (perceived) breathing problems right when I'm ready to transition out of the body.

It just feels like I should be inhaling/exhaling and to my mind I can't tell that I'm doing either.

Fighting to inhale and be aware of it has often ruined a good transition I believe.

As of late, I've taken to just out and out ignoring it and focusing on the transition and it's worked pretty well.

I've had some very low grade lucidity experiences, but it was something and that's better than nothing. LoL

I hope while I'm here on this board I learn to increase my level of overall lucidity, in addition to increasing the frequency of my experiences.

I get this too. You just gotta not think about it. The more you think about it the more you do it. :]

Its easy for me.
I just drop my jaw open (without opening my mouth)
it allows the saliva to drop to the bottom of your mouth and you don't feel like gagging/gulping.
Don't worry... you wont drown and you feel like you are getting deeper into sleep too with it dropped (this is how you probably are when asleep too).
Try it...hope it works for you too.

I have found this to work myself. The more worrying one does, the more they have to worry about.

You don't HAVE to lay completely still to WILD. LaBerge, creator of the technique, only lay still during research sessions so that his movements wouldn't interfere with the equipment readings.

So swallow all you want! The key is to not care about the body. =3

Gulping moves the whole top half of the body....especially after waiting for ages to do so.
(not to mention it detracts from your away from body thoughts, bringing them back to your body)

I think it depends how you are lying.

I swallow quite a bit .. when I start getting hallucinations and stuff.. or I have been smoking.. makes me a bit nervous or something.. but it goes when I don't think about it and relax.. when I start worrying about it and it effecting my SP then it does it more.

Just get the swallow out of the way if you need to.. or you will be bugged by it like choking yourself.

do it fast get it done with and forget about it.

I have got into SP fast and easy when gulping.. it doesn't exactly move all the top half of the body.

You may be moving for like a few mins when getting the gulping under control.. but its a natural reaction.. its not like your waving your arms around.

just swallow all you like and don't worry about it.. if you worry you will do it more. Keep your body relaxed .. just focus on the body being still and relaxed. The swallowing is internal.. it doesn't effect sp much.

You can relax your body fast if you want to. Just concentrate on that if you have moved to swallow.



Anyway. Its hard to explain.
This is my opinion.

Just dot worry about it.

Swallowing is non-distractive when you're trying to WILD. It takes more effort to worry about swallowing than not swallowing. Just let it happen.

Sorry I disagree.
I feel you should focus on the WILD and detract all thoughts from and about the body.
Each time you want to gulp, you bring it back to the body.
You are trying to forget about the body and move into your dream body.
Best is to focus on the WILD and not do any movement at all. They are all tests to see if you will succumb and show the your body you are still awake.
And lets see if you gulp once, you don't want to again and again...
Tilt your head slightly if you want...people dribble out the side of their mouths all the time when sleeping if it builds up.
Why when WILDing, would you do something different.
Be as tricky as your body's mechanisms to test you are. Trust me.
I lie like a mannequin on the floor of a shop window, and don't move.

What if you cant help it.

People still have an urge to swallow with no saliva.. its not the build up of saliva that's the problem.. its the swallowing action.
Its something you can't stop unless you let it happen and relax about it.

I understand...but being tough you learn to kerb those sensations, or spend hours and nights trying to get back to where you started.
I am sorry but your body and mind are tricky bastards, and if you don't beat them, they will beat you.
If you are serious about Lucidity, you will adjust to win the game.

i do agree with the dude. those type of things are tests to see if you are still conscious and awake, and your goal is to trick ur mind into thinking you ARE asleep. although, sleeping experiences vary from people to people. Many people swallow and gulp as a natural process when they sleep, and its almost involuntary- like breathing. if this is the case, then not thinking about it is the way to go. you'll find yourself swallowing without even noticing it. although if you go to WILD thinking about your urge to swallow, you WILL have a stronger tie to the real world rather than the dream world when you gulp. just remember everyone is different and just try not thinking about it. AT ALL. then hopefully you will never have the urge in the first place to gulp. :D

man.. I have done LD for a long time. And if you are serious then you can relax your body within minutes.. a slight move like a swallow will NOT effect your body if you are good enough then you can get your body into deep relaxation on the edge of sp straight away... if not then you gotta do it this way...

.. I can wild and get SP in 15mins gulping or not...but some people aren't capable of what you are saying.. the easiest way to go about this is to let it happen, relax and overcome it that way.

its not like an itch which you can ignore and overcome.. its much stronger than that. If you are new to wild and ld its not as easy as you make out.

The best way to go about it is to relax forget about it and swallow all you feel you need to...
THEN

when you are used to this sensation and relaxed about it.. you can fight it and not have to do it.

people gotta start somewhere. And this is the easiest root.


What you are saying is .. a newbee trying out wild for the first time has to resist this .. but man.. trying to do that is causing too much stress and thinking. Its not the best way.

.. trying to not swallow causes way to much thinking and worrying to get into sp.. there's no point.. you might as well swallow and carry on relaxing.. SP will come much faster.

for those of you who say swallowing doesnt make a difference for some people it does i try to wild every night (i allow myself to swallow) and i just sit waiting.......counting.......waiting.........swall owing.........waiting...........breathing.ect and to no avail finally i thought hmmm maybe its my swallowing sure enough i forced myself not to swallow and soon after i started transitioning but there increase in heart rate and difficulty breathing scared me out of it and i did a reality check to maek sure it wasnt a fa but i had failes

but you need to keep in mind, your success that one night might've been because of your will power. you were thinking- wellll it was the swallowing that was causing me to fail... if i dont swallow, ill succeed!!! -- that is often the case for many experimentations like thiss....

i was thinking i would succeed while swallowing too but it never worked
and i swallow way more than normal

Well I am proud of you. But most cannot do this so easily.
I have found I have a massive itch and urge in the back of my throat.
It drives me staying still to an unbearable urge to swallow or cough and get rid of the tickle.
I was soooo surprised..I just held it and it went away. A MASSIVE tickle in my throat.
Firstly I didn't move...so I still WILDed later on, and secondly the thinking about it and the tickle gets intense, but only lasted a min or two till I overcame the urge.
Then all went away. I am serious it felt like a massive test by my body....I passed the test....and it went like "Oh well...he's asleep...no need to keep trying to test him" (well not really, but that's what it felt like).
I would rather think hard and beat the tests and get it over with, than keep gulping for hours on end. It seems most have tried both ways and found it better to not Gulp or cough. We are stronger than you think.
After you alleviate the sensation (if you can't shake thinking about it), go straight to your WILD techniques and focus on them. The gulping/itching should have been dealt with and move on.
