I wanna become a pro at inducing DILD's, and I'm going to it by doing a reality check every 10 minutes. I want to buy a watch that beeps every 10 minutes, and wear it at all times, even at night.
Do you people think this will help?

Every 10 minutes Jesus Christ. I'm getting a watch that beeps on the hour tomorrow, that should help some. Try autosuggesting also, that can be really helpful.
I've been doing this myself for quite a while now. Setting a timer for reality checks has helped to keep me doing them often, and I do end up doing random RC's in dreams now and then because of it.
The fact that your doing lots of RC's is good in that it will help you to remember to do the RC in a dream when you start to think you may be dreaming. Some people say only do them when you see something strange though.
If you really want to be sure to get results though, the real trick is keeping your mind aware to the fact that you could be dreaming at any time. Constantly be on the alert for anything that seems dream like. because the real goal is to get yourself to think about whether or not your dreaming while in the dream. And since you dream about the things that are on your mind the most. You need to keep the question "is this a dream right now?" On your mind as often as you can.
here is the possible problem with what you are doing. YOU are not making the decision to RC. This means you are not thinking. Just doing.
If you don't hear the beep while you sleep, then you will still not be thinking and this will be crap.
You need to think to RC. What am I doing? Why? Where am I? Is everything in order? Could this be a dream?
Without analysing, you will probably give 0 thought to the RC and then not dream about it.
If I do an RC every 10 minutes then I will also be thinking about dreaming etc all the time... That should help.
You may get some Lucids that way. And maybe you will even dream that your timer goes off and do an RC. (Which is what I've been trying to make happen and had a little bit of results with.) But your still going to need to really put a lot of mental power into it if you want to get a lot of Lucids going. Especially when your first starting out.
Just try it, and at the same time experiment with staying aware of what your doing and whats going on around you as much as you can, and see what happens. And when your timer goes off try and make sure your not just doing it automatically. Because what James said is absolutely right. If it gets to be too automatic it probably won't get into your dreams.
I don't rely on the RC's to get me Lucid. I just use them for when I think I could be dreaming and not quite sure. Though it's always nice when you get a random one. I've only actually been using RC's for about a year or so. I've always just used my thoughts to get me Lucid in the past. But since hearing of the nose RC I've been using that regularly in combination with the mental work.
Beeping might wake you up, vibrating would be best. You can find them at blue collar sporting good stores because hunters use them so that the beeping doesn't scare away game. You should also be able to feel the vibration while asleep.
True, I don't know if he is planning to keep the timer on while he is sleeping or not. I always turn mine off before going to sleep. I always sleep with earplugs anyway. I know trying to hear the timer in my sleep won't work for me. I just want to dream that it goes off. :D
Yeah, just dreaming that it goes off is normally the way that it works, but if you can feel the real one as well you greatly increase your chances or it happening while in REM cycle.
Maybe I'll try that. I'll see what they have at the sporting goods shop near me.
ya like james said. if it beeps every 10 minutes, it will eventually become jaded and you wont give thought to it, it will become second nature which is the opposite of what you want. and wtf dude, every 10 minutes.... I give you 3 days before you throw that thing out or someone rips you a new one for pulling something like that.
Total confusion. Am I supposed to do RC's or not?
Someone told me that they SHOULD become second nature, and now you guys say that it shouldn't. Apparently I even fail at the simplest things in life. Why oh why.
No seriously, When my watch beeps it will automaticly remind me to think about dreaming and check my enviroment and stuff. Just in case I forget. It's not just to tell me that I have to do an RC.
The beep will remind me to use that mental power of mine :-)
I think what they're really trying to say is that if you simply rely on a watch to tell you when to do a RC, the problem becomes the fact that your watch may not go off on its own in your dreams since you're not the one telling it to go off.
The advantage to doing RC's when something strange happens is that whether you're dreaming or not, you're prompting yourself to do a RC because something out of the ordinary is going on, which can be a sort of dream sign. But if something such as a watch is telling you to do them at definite intervals, there's always a chance you'll be able to forget about it in between the beeps by your watch, knowing that it'll remind you again on its own when 10 minutes have passed...which defeats the purpose, since you aren't thinking about it (and therefore you won't be thinking about it enough to get it to go off naturally in your dreams either, since you expect it to happen on its own).
If you are still thinking about RC's between the beeps by your watch, then it's probably alright, since you'd be thinking about it occasionally in your dreams as well...it just defeats the purpose if you only think about it when your watch prompts you, because that would mean you're not only waiting for it to beep in real life, but you'd be waiting for it to beep in your dreams too. And since your dream watch isn't a real watch with a timer, it might just never go off.:shakehead:
Right right, Sorry to confuse you. But you said you wanted to become a pro DILDer So I'm just trying to emphasise the importance of really thinking about it to get lots of Lucids going. Because getting Lucid is more about the mental work than the RCing. But doing lots of RC's does help. Go ahead, set the timer and do it, it's good to experiment. I use mine and will continue to do so as well.:)
Note: The last two hours before taking a nap today I did tons of RC's More than I can know. I went to sleep, and I just woke up from a random reality check induced Lucid. So there is your proof that you can get Lucid that way sometimes. :D I'll be back on later to record it.
Good Luck, and feel free to PM me if you have any other questions about how I induce my Lucids.
Ive found that when i want to get back into LDs (I go through phases!) I find that throughout the reality checks that you can do, the main thing is not the actual check itself, its having your mind actively thinking about dreaming or considering that you mind be in the dream world.
Ive tried to remember the feeling in general of being in a dream, being in a lucid dream etc...im talking about the general feeling. The more your mind is generally thinking about it the more when youre in a dream your mind will be aware :)
Works for me, a week of consistently reality checking with bringing on that feeling and im lding every night ^_^
the day i found this site, i was constantly thinking about dreaming.
that night, i remembered i was dreaming
thinking about dreaming helps you LD, in my opinion
Doing a reality check every ten minutes feels too often. The most effective number of realty checks is apparently 22 per day (according to a quote off of some Tibetan guy). I think it needs testing!
Be sure to give proper thought, and it might work. Don't just perform a reality check at the watch beep. Look around to see if anything is different, backtrack your thoughts, and see if anything is dream-like. What I'm saying is, don't only do a physical reality check. Always, always, add a thought reality check.
Congratulations!
I dreamed of my RC timer going off last night after a WBTB. But I had just fallen asleep and was too close to the waking state. When ever I do RC's at that time, they wake me up. I woke up and I was pinching my nose for real.
Abra- I have to do shit loads of RC's in order to remember to do them in a dream once I start questioning things. And the last Lucid I had I'm sure I did more than a hundred in the two hours before I fell asleep. Then did a random RC in my dream and got Lucid. I don't Normally get Lucid from random RC's though, Just now and then.
if rc become second nature, sure, maybe ull do them in a dream, but again, they will only appear second nature. you wont think anything of them. train yourself to do RC when yoiu see something out of the ordinary
I'm not that experienced but I think it's not so much the amount of RCs but how much attention you devote to them. Just pinching your nose every ten minutes probably won't get you any further.
I try to do RCs depending on the situation. For example when I meet someone I didn't expect to meet, when I enter a room or leave a building, when I see people waering strange cloths or a rare car driving by, or just when a cloud covers the sun.
And then I first try to assess the whole situation. First I look around to get a general impression of the visual: Is everything clear ? Do the colors make sense ? Do shapes change when I look around ? Are sizes of objects proportional ?
Second I try to make sense of the whole context. Do I excatly know where I am ? Do I know why I'm there ? Do I remember how I got there ? Do I know time and date ? Who are the persons around me and why are they there ?
Next I try to look for something to read to do the reading RC, followed by looking at my hands and the nose pinch finalizes the whole test. After I am done I take time to tell myself, that now I can be 100% that I am not dreaming. The whole thing take a minute or two.
I guess the point is really to constantly and seriously consider that you are in a dream, even though that seems absurd most of the (wake) time.
I think there is a point where you begin to do it too often (every ten minutes fits into this category). The problem is that you may become so used to it that you begin to just go through the motions of the RC and filter out the significance of the moment completely.
My preferred method is to have a small sign in my cubicle at work, out of my normal line of sight. When I happen to turn around and look for something, I usually spot it out of the corner of my eye, and I do my RC then. I think this is more likely to condition me to react to an unexpected situation.
Each 10 minutes?! LOL! This is a good idea, I'll try this too ^^
I got Lucid again last night from a random RC, without noticing any thing at all odd.
So the nay sayers don't win. :P
"I have learned to ignore such naysayers when...quelling them...is out of the question." -> >Who said that?
Too many reality checks and I start gettin hazy about whats a dream and what isnt, well not really, but it starts to feel that way. Its good to have at least a basic grip on which is which :P
When I was massively into LDing, I started feeling like it was all one big adventure, reality and dreams, all kind of merged together. Was kind of cool, but a little up in the clouds
Reality check is a way how to train your prospective memory too. Becouse all you want to do, is to somehow realize within a dream, you should take a look at your watch.
Take a look at.: http://www.youtube.com/user/lucidipedia
There ... somewhere in his advanced videos Tim mentions a technique to train prospective memmory. And that would be:
1. use an alarm clock. Set its timer to go off after lets say five minutes.
2. train yourself to shut the alarm clock right before it should start ringing.
Not to wait before it fires but to stop it right before that happens. Thats a chalenge... :D
I know exactly what you mean! I do that when I set my normal alarm clock but I wake up either right as it goes off or about 5 mins before. When I wonder why I woke up I only come up with, to turn off the alarm :D So while not going off it still serves its purpose quietly.
I like to RC whenever my heart rate is up, because things in dreams for me often result in that pumping feeling. That and when I just REALLY wish its a dream like walking up a big hill when you're tired.
Cheers

I used to do that. I couldn't find a watch that beeps every few minutes so I bought and wear two watches that I can set to beeps every 30 minutes. I set one watch to run 15 minutes earlier so that I would get a beep every 15 minutes. I also do a RC whenever I open or close a door. And whenever I see another person. The point is do as much and think as much about LD as you can in the morning. Don't worry...it works!!!

Well, last night I dreamed of my RC timer going off, and did a reality check. But I ended up messing up the RC. So I missed out on the perfect opportunity to get an RC timer Lucid. :(
Adraw, sometimes I actually do try to stay aware of the exact point the timer will go off.
I second the importance of critical thinking, as many already said it's not so much the actual RC (i.e plugging your nose) that's important but to really question your surrondings and reality. I've only tried to induce DILD's and I find that I often just become lucid by thinking in a dream "is this a dream", the RC itself becomes redundant. But RC's do actualy help, as you turn them in to a habit, as a reminder to keeping a critical approch to your reality.
So I think your idea is good as long as you do the RC's properly! The menal bit and being critical is crucial!
