1. After twenty minutes of lying still I felt quite strong pins and needles coming up my arm, was this the start of SP?
2. Can SP be achieved lying on your side or does it have to be done lying on your back?
Thanks :)

I'm guessing you were lieing on your side.. which could have caused the pins and needles if you were lieing on that arm :P. Ermm.. I've only done it once and I was kinda on my back, but I don't believe it matters. I found I didn't notice paralysis at all, instead I saw a figure doing something in my bed sheets and then closed my eyes and heard a voice sing my name, I had no idea about sleep paralysis and I got up pretty quickly creeped out. However a mistake I made in repeating WILD is that I don't think you can go to bed just normally and enter a lucid. You have to either wake yourself up before REM, or nap... I think. I'd say you'll definately know when you really hit SP because you experience halucinations.
Actually, when I was experiencing the pins and needles I was on my back :P :S. So SP is best done after you've slept for a while?
You don't *have* to lay on your back, but I find it much easier to project when I'm waking up laying on my back contra my side. Also, the pineal gland releases more DMT when you're on laying on your back.
You didn't necessarily have a SP, you might just have been experiencing hypnagogia or hypnopompia.
Allow me to shed some light on this topic. You will KNOW when SP hits because its a sensation like nothing you've ever felt. Its more than just pins and needles because it is your whole body going into paralysis. Alot of times when it happens to me I also get auditory signs. However, other times SP can be followed directly with entering into a dream. The process is different for each person so its hard to explain what exactly it will be like for you. But trust me, you'll just KNOW know when it happens. Hope this helps.
For me SP, (when I experience it) is weird. I could NOT move and something was banging on the cupboard behind me. It wasn't scary (when I think about it now it was) because I knew I was dreaming. I tried to stop it with my mind and jump out the window but failed and went into deeper sleep.
You can achieve SP on your side, but your back is more effective if its not the way you usually sleep.
If you enter SP, theres wont be any doubt in your mind wether it was SP or not :) It can be quite intense. Sometimes you can hear a noise that's so loud that your ears hurt!
For me its like this - 'Unwanted' SP most of the times happened while lying on my back. Lately, most of my SPs have been while lying on my side, I find this more comfortable.
