I've encountered a few, most notably in this experience:
When I dream and I feel threatened, i use my "powers", in my dreams i give myself the right to summon any power I need to defend myself. I was sleeping on my side, the shadow being was sitting on my hip stroking my hair, like it was admiring me. At first I thought:"I'm dreaming, my grand-ma is visiting me" (it happens once in a while)
I wouldn't move my body, only my eyes, so I couldn't see all of it, but i realised it wasn't my grandma, but an unknown male presence. Then I got scared, and I tried to make him flee with my powers ( i tried to summon fire, i thought i was lucid dreaming), but I had a really had time moving my body like i didn't have enough "dream juice" to do what I want with the dream
Then i noticed that my body what half in etheric form, the red, orange and yellow strings my astral body is made of was seeping through my skin...
and he said that I wasn't dreaming and thats why my powers wouldn't work
he fled by himself, then my room got brighter and I was fully awake.
one two freddys coming for you.
Moonshine, you're not a skeptic, you're a preconceptualist.

A real scientist or skeptic wouldn't believe this either though.
I on the other hand know shadow people exist, they're actually soft and warm. I wear them during the day and hang them in my room on the door knob or on a chair when I get home. Often they scare me as I wake up in the morning, but they don't really mean to so I don't get mad at them.
This would seem like a pretty good explanation to me.
Great, now I think I see something in the corner of my eye all the time.
After reading this I dreamed of a shadow being last night. Mine was something that I normally wouldn't perceive as a shadow, because normally I wouldn't try to see it, I would feel it and develop a story from what I feel. This agrees with what someone else says below. The appearance of the shadow probably doesn't show much about the nature of the thing. Presumably a person could see more than a shadow if their active vision was more developed, but it seems to me that it would take an awful lot of development to see very much that way.
I had a shadow man on my bedroom wall EVERY NIGHT for a period when I was young. Nobody else ever saw him. It was right away after going to bed, not right before drifting off to sleep, not right after waking up, but wide awake. It was just his profile. He worse a hat and perhaps had a trench-coat on with the collar flipped up. He never moved. He never said a word. He just watched. I was really scared of him at first. My mom would come in and move my furniture and nicknacks but he never left. She would turn off my lights and check my walls and say SEE? NOTHING! But once she closed my door and left BAM there he was.
My mom had this lump develop on her forehead and she saw this shadowy figure following her around the house. She would just catch a glimpse of it and when she'd try to confront it or look directly at it, it would vanish. She felt like it was negative, like a "dark cloud" or something. One day she sensed it and said, "You're not gonna get me! Get out of here!" And that scared the shit out of her. Why'd she say that? What did it mean? This was all while FULLY AWAKE, walking, cooking, using the restroom, etc. So anyhow... she thought on it and then decided to go to the dr again regarding the lump. They just kept dismissing it as a cist. She found out she had non-hodgkin's lymphoma (a form of cancer)! She began chemotherapy and radiation and the lump began to shrink. The shadowy figure stopped coming around. My mom has now been cancer-free for 4 years. She still thinks it was some type of reaper waiting for her to cross over.... but who knows?
Yes, or some kind of warning fate.
When I was a child I had a terrifying recurring dream of a shape moving across my ceiling. With retrospect had the sound and appearance of an F-117, but light instead of dark, since the ceiling was dark. When I had these 'dreams' it was like I was wide awake, in a state akin to what a person would astrally project from. I eventually trained myself not to react emotionally to the dream, and that caused them to stop happening. The dream did prove to be related to developments later in my life though, things that I have not been able to avoid but have to fight against, as if they spring from a part of myself. So learning to detach emotionally might have been a step, but it wasn't the full solution.
I don't make a distinction between the 'daemon' that brought me the nightmare, and the daemon that inspires beautiful insights or causes other events in my life. Its like its just got a job to do. I 'saw' it once, it was like an orb of light moving around and touching my brain. When I say saw I don't mean that I was looking outwards, I was dreaming and I was just sort of aware, not with the usual field of vision.
