Do you need a sleeping pattern for an amazing dream-recal?

Could you have amazing dream recall if you dom't really have good dream recall?

I'm not sure what you mean by "sleep pattern", but I know that I have more dream recall when I get a decent night's sleep, so for me more than just a few hours. I also notice that if I use substances before bed (in my case MJ or alcohol) that my dream recall is significantly weakened, to the point where I can't remember a single detail about a dream. Like last night, I had two beers before bed and although I wasn't drunk I still cant recall my dreams from last night.

Are you a particularly light or heavy sleeper? I have read some research on how those who are more of "light" sleepers have more of a chance of recalling dreams or becoming lucid because they seem to teeter on the edge of awareness while they sleep.

Also, stress is a huge factor, so if you are stressing about life, or even stressing about dreaming, it will affect how well you can recall dreams.

It is amazing, isn't it? Trying to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day is actually one of the hardest things to do!

But no, this isn't required for great recall. It helps, especially making sure you get enough sleep so you're well-rested.

But much more important is establishing the habit of quietly reaching for dream memories every time you wake up, thinking about them alot, writing them in a journal, and especially: changing yourself to pay attention to all experiences and striving to be fully present in every moment.

I have a pretty regular sleep schedule and I think it helps me remember dreams better because on days that I sleep late, it's really hard to remember dreams even though I can sense that I've had them. For me exercise is what makes me able to fall asleep at around the same time every night. I just play some energetic music on my earbuds and jump around inside for a few songs. It's really easy to do because you don't have to put on shoes or go outside, so weather never stops me.
