Personally, I don't and am pretty opinionated on the topic. I don't like how everything on the radio nowadays is either synthesized, has repetitive lyrics, is about drugs or "being in da club", or is offensive. On the bus this morning, a mainstream radio station was playing music and my ears were burning from all the synthesized voices.
I'm sure there's other opinions out there. What about you guys?

I dislike mainstream music for the exact same reasons. I only turn on the radio when I'm using the bathroom at my house. It's always KROQ. It's more of having sound, than listening to it.
Right, that's what I meant. The voices just all sound flat, and electronic which doesn't create a sense of originality between singers. I like to hear raw, original voices that haven't been changed that much.
I have the radio in my car set to Rock Radio. It's pretty awesome, and stays away from all that shit "mainstream" stuff.

No. Never. I hate it. I think the last sort of mainstream stuff I got was a Gnarls Barkley album, and really, it's only "Crazy" on that album that was ever played on radio regularly. The rest is really quite unique.
I don't listen to radio that much. But I do listen to mainstream music as well as indie music. Because I like all kinds of music and I'm not trying to be different or anything because that's lame. Auto-tune can sound pretty gay sometimes but "raw" isn't original either. Both Nickelback and Kanye West are mainstream.
Mainstream makes my ears bleed for the same reasons as OP. It drives me crazy. I like techno, trance, etc, but what's mainstream just sucks so terribly. The actual contents of the lyrics are a huge turn-off, too. It just seems so...crass. Euphemisms for sex are great in the right context, but the way so many songs use them is just irritating. :/

All the time. I have my radio set to BTQ when I drive. The repetition of lyrics gets annoying at times as well as the other reasons the OP stated, but as a whole, I love mainstream music.

I hate most Main-stream, one or two songs are al right, but then the radio plays them over and over again, and then they just get annoying. The only "mainstream" band i like and don't find annoying is Rammstien
I listen to Metal, not slipknot, ACDC(is that even metal?), metalica or any band like them. But bands like Crossbreed, Celldweller, Samel, VWOA and PAIN. I guess i am like PHEENIX's "middle ground"
Mainstream music sucks.. and mainstream rock sounds like it was written and sung by people with down syndrome.

I actually appreciate mainstream synthesized pop music on a different level now that I've listened to enough music. You can pick apart all the different layers and appreciate exactly how well-produced the stuff is today. What the kick is like, the filters, etc etc.
I forget where I was that I actually had to listen to a pop station for a while, but I was kinda horrified. I didn't realize people who actually make their living in the music industry were using Auto Tune. I thought it was just a joke, an insult to say someone's song was AutoTuned, but no. They are. Nearly all of them, based on my limited sample.
I can listen to some mainstream formats--classic rock, hard rock, alt rock and some of the more funk/R&B skewed oldies stations--but they get old pretty quick. If I listen to internet radio, it's usually '90s/'00s trip-hop, jazz, or blues/roots. I like a lot of jam bands, but I mostly stick to my own library for that stuff; any internet jam stations I've found played almost nothing but Grateful Dead interspersed with absolute crap. I'm near a decent college station, too--they're good for indie rock and sometimes electronica.
I don't judge strictly on the fact that something is indeed mainstream music, it's more of the feelings I get when listening to the song itself. If a song sounds ugly to me, I won't like it. A lot of mainstream songs sound ugly to me, there are very few that I enjoy listening to. But there is a lot of non-mainstream that sounds just as bad.
The whole autotune thing sounds so generic nowadays, it's boring. And the cliche "getTn druNKk prtyy evryday mayb smke weed errday if i fel like showin of ma blinng" lyrical variation puts a bad taste in my mouth.
I don't like how it controls many aspects most of our younger generation. But that's in the mix with modern pop culture in general these days.

Although I NEVER listen to radio and would guess that most of the bands I really like aren't widely popular or known. I saw them once, but it was a very small location with maybe 30 people.

I never listen to the radio anymore, because it's always the same bs, on every station, 24/7, 20 times a day:) In fact, first thing I did when I installed a new radio in my car was leave the radioconnection unplugged:)
I went to a Pink Floyd concert last friday (Scandinavian copy band thing) and it was really good. I don't go to many concerts or live events, but this is probably some of the best music I've heard in a long time. They played the entirety of Dark Side of the Moon and then also a lot of other well known songs, like Comfortably Numb, Learning to Fly, Wish You Were Here and so on. Really great stuff :)

If it's on the radio, you know it must be bad. I'm convinced that the radios are colluding to play only the 10 worst rappers in the world. :D I love rap and it's by far my favorite type of music, but you'll never hear any good music on the radio. You won't believe how many people hate rap simply because all they've ever heard is Lil Wayne. If he was the only rapper I heard, I'd hate rap too. :) It's really alienating people from discovering genuinely good music, which is out there but you have to look for it.
Eninem is the only decent mainstream rapper i have heard, although some of his songs are pretty crap. 50 cent, lil wayne and usher are really shit rappers/hip-hop "artists"Quote:

But anyway, I don't listen to much mainstream, unless it's the rock station, and even that is kind of hit-and-miss. I love when they play some Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Godsmack, Rage Against the Machine, KoRn, Sublime, Beastie Boys, etc. There are a few newer bands that I might like a single or two from: Nicleback, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, etc. If it's on 101.1 (WJRR), I can pretty much vibe for a while.
Then, there are the mainstream "hip-hop" stations around here, which I think are an absolute joke. Every now and then, they will play something I can vibe to, but mainly...it's all just 45 minutes out of every hour, listening to the same 5 Lil' Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross songs. It is horrible.
Mostly, I just listen to MP3's now, or try to find some lesser-known music, off of streaming net radio sites like Pandora and such. A lot of my taste is underground (Electronic Breaks / Drum n' Bass / Jungle etc), but I do like the classics. A lot of old funk/soul/R&B I can still groove to (my dad was a DJ, back in the day, so I grew up listening to Bootsy, Parliament Funkadelic, Luther Vandross, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, etc), and I will always have a spot for those. But as mainstream music marches on, I find myself becoming more and more detached from it.

Nothing truly "wrong" with mainstream, radio music. No, I dont listen to it. But I dont like to shit on it either.
IMO, there is just simply better music to be found elsewhere.

There's nothing with being mainstream but most of the stuff that makes it into the mainstream nowadays just happens to be puddles of sloppy shit. Everything so generic now - it's like the songs dont even change, just the singer.
It used to be different, there's hardly anything unique about using auto-tune anymore. What annoys me is the fact that people who can't sing or come up with decent lyrics are raking in a shitload of cash because they're using auto-tune in a totally unoriginal way. Various artists like Tech N9NE use it in moderation and in a way that you may not expect while artists like T-Pain use it and end up creating 50 songs that all sound the exact same.Quote:

I caught this on the internets the other day, and it's actually a pretty good song I think, although I was never too fond of rap/hiphop. It just goes to show that it can work, but its current form is kind of lame.

I can't stand the music my local radio stations play resulting in me buying an auxiliary cord for my ipod. I am definitely against mainstream music only because of it's lack of creativity.
I have very eclectic tastes, listening any genre you can think of. However, I hate the radio because I find it both shallow and repetitive. To me, good music needs to be dynamic. By dynamics I mean creative and full. I think artists achieve this in many different ways, incorporating various rhythmic qualities for example. There's something to be offered from any genre but what I hear on the radio has bin flattened. I think that I may very well have a music addiction. Radio bugs me so much I have to calm myself with my own collection if I'm ever forced to listen to the radio for an extended period of time. Last December I had a nervous breakdown because my work played christmas music for 4 weeks straight. .. .. so my answer is no, I don't listen to the radio / mainstream music. :)
I do actively look out for new stuff however,,, but I search using internet, music shops, word of mouth, etc.
Edit: Oh and one reason I can't stand my local radio station is they play the same songs 10 times a day, every day. They might replace a song in there playlist every 2 to 3 months. This gets old fast and Ive lived in this town for 28 years. I don't see how any station could get away with having less music than the very first mp3 players could hold.
I used to despise mainstream music. Hated it with a passion. But after a while, I began to saw value in it. Listening to mainstream music is more of a social experience than anything else, something that brings people together. While I see infinitely more value in specific music I like, I find that learning to not hate mainstream music makes like more fun haha. As for autotune, I only dislike it if the artist is not forthcoming with it. Using it as an effect actually sounds pretty pleasing to me. It's the people who pretend to sing well by hiding behind it that I hate.

Rarely. I have XM, and I'm usually tuned to Alt Nation, Classic Vinyl, 90s on 9, or something similar. The only remotely mainstream station I usually ever listen to is the French "Air Musique."
Though I admit, Party Rock Anthem is a guilty pleasure of mine.:D

I like songs, I dislike songs. I'm not going to hate a song because it's played on the radio or because it's "mainstream".
I like radiohead, I like RHCP, I like Led Zepplin and Pearl Jam. They are all on the radio, and are (or were) extremely "mainstream". I like music that I like. I'm not going to be a non-conformist douche that hates everything on the radio for the sake of it, or that hates mainstream music just because it's mainstream. Hell, John Mayer has a few songs that I dig.

You all must listen to pop/ top 40. I can assure you that country music is generally not synthesized.
The problem with mainstream/alternative where I'm from is that when a genre becomes mainstream it still has a huge fanbase, but some-hipsters- leave and then go to alternative shows etc.
That's why every new rockband is indie I guess. Which is a contradictio in terminis.
For kids there's Bieber and the Jonas Brothers and such, for teens there's Bieber and Lady Gaga and for everybody older it seems to be schlager here.
Mainstream to me is the songs that are played on the radio, songs I despise. On easter and every sunday night there's metal on the radio here.
I'm a fan of most thrashmetal. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura, Channel zero...
Most of them -Metallica e g- is super popular and sell a lot of albums, but still they don't get played that often here. That's why I consider Metallica neither mainstream nor alternative
