No and no. Technically, an "indie" band is a band who is not signed to a major label, though there is a sound associated with it. Today, "indie" encompasses such a massive array of styles that it's basically impossible to define.
As for pop being the opposite of music, The Beatles are a prime of example of pop music at its finest. Heck even Micheal Jackson and Prince deserve respect as pop artists. The designation "pop" can have negative connatations of course, but some of the best music ever written also falls into that category.
As for The Killers....I'd label them as straight up pop/rock these days.
Anyways, I'm listening to "Swans (Life After Death)" by Islands (a great Canadian indie/pop act, formerly The Unicorns).
Paranoid Android by Radiohead
Bradybaker, I meant MODERN pop, which I hate with every cell of my being. Along with most modern music.
Roger Waters - Sheep (Live)
Mansfield, Massachusetts, September 8th 2006.
I guess it's because I don't look for more music, for the most part. One thing I hate about pop like that is that there aren't any real instruments. Not on the stuff I have to listen to, anyway. My school bus has a radio. God, I hate that thing. "The BEST variety," they say. On the only station the bus driver ever chooses. The best variety of complete and utter crap. I hate hip-hop and pop, and nobody will be able to convince me otherwise.
Also, I know there is LOTS of good indie out there. You were right about The Decemberists, I think I'll go hunting for some of their CD's tomorrow.
Blessed Be Your Name - idk who wrote it.
"Thats why I find Christian Evangelical pop so powerful, it has the feel of some raincoat trying to lure you into his car to look at his puppies."
The russian decembrists group was better...
