Dragonball Live Action Movie Set To Roll

I was a fan ever since I was in 6th grade, so naturally I'm looking forward to this. Of course fans of the show have been hearing about this movie being in the works for ages...well apparently enough interest was generated for the film (perhaps partially due to the success of the games?) and Fox is rolling with the production of this film. Yeah, and I think fox took all this into account...hence their hesitation on moving forward with this film (mind you they acquired the license to shoot this film many years ago, but sat on it) but I think if they're moving forward with it...they have some trump cards up their sleeves that we'll all be amazed at. They've got people working on this movie that worked on 300, matrix, bourne supremacy etc...the movie will be given a release date in summer of '08 :)

This sucks, definately should have done either the cell or frieza saga's.

Well the Piccolo saga was the part most people started in with, so it makes sense to start there.. Frieza and Cell might make sequels if this is successful.

I agree. The reason they started back so early is probably because they're looking to do sequels depending on the successful gross of this movie. Maybe the last trilogy will involve Goku going SS? o.o

This movie was originally planned to come out in 05' but never went anywhere because they fired the creator of the DBZ series from the production team.

I've got mixed feelings about this.

I'm excited that the movie's been given the green light, but the way things are looking, it could go either way. It's good that they started with the Piccolo Saga, but there was heavy, heavy martial arts in that saga. Probably more-so than any saga that followed (except maybe the Freiza saga). It focused much more grappling and speed-fighting. I don't think these cast members know the first thing about fighting, so I'm kind of skeptical about what their level of training will be able to do for them, and whether or not it will make the fights believable. These characters are supposed to be the greatest fighters on the planet. They better deliver.

However, it is produced by the guys that brought us Kung-Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. That's a definite plus. They've been able to pull of some really DBZ-ish fight scenes, so that's got my hopes up a little.

As far as the cast members, based on looks, I do have a hard time with Goku not being played by an asian. I guess I've always just pictured him as one, but Chatwick does kind of have the "docile Goku" kind of face. I haven't really seen any pictures of him when he's serious/pissed-off, so I can't really say too much on that now.

Marsters is not going to be playing the piccolo that you have a picture of, though, Jeff. He's going to be playing King Piccolo, which is the one in the first picture on this thread. He looks like this.

I've never seen her act, but she's definitely a hot one....so that's half the battle won. Haha.

And "It's over 9000!" definitely wouldn't be in this one. So we'll have to see how well this does and whether or not they plan on making it a series.

There's a lot of controversy already about this movie. From my research, if I had to put it into a percntage...90% of supporters of the anime/film are outraged that Goku is to be played by a scrawny white kid. They would much prefer a Jap-american guy.

My thoughts? I was pissed when I found out goku was played by this kid as well, because of his ethnicity and his size. But now that I think about it...Goku was never "asian" really. His blood is alien to earth, so he very well "could" be portrayed by a white character. Though I would rather see a half asian/half white guy play goku with an american accent, not a foreign accent. Yeah, I agree with that. I've just always pictured him as such, especially since he and Yamcha look almost identical, and Yamcha is "supposedly" Asian (even though the show takes place in all fictional locations. You can tell that that was who they were modeled after).

And yeah. Brandon Lee would make an awesome Goku, but maybe not at this stage in Goku's life. He was supposedly like 18-20, during the Piccolo Saga.

I would say maybe Ernie Reyes Jr., but I think he's make a better Vegeta than a Goku, being so short and all. Come to think of it, I think he'd make a perfect Vegeta. Heh.

I can't really think of anybody, right off the bat, that strikes me as a good choice for Goku...

Hmmm..maybe that kid that was the main character in Kung-Fu Hustle. He's probably the best I can think of, now.

Honestly, I hope they don't go too overboard with the hairdos. I interpret that they are all just really exaggerated, in the anime, so, while they should still have big hair, I hope they don't get completely retarded with it. Haha. Cartoon-to-live-action hair hardly ever comes out right...but I was impressed with what they did with Wolverine, in X-men. He actually made a whacked-out hairdo look awesome. Heh.

It's hard to say. I suppose they could fit the Saiya-Jin Saga (the one that follows King Piccolo's) into one movie. It would be a cram, though, if they had Goku's brother Radditz come to Earth first (he actually comes to Earth before Vegeta and Nappa). But, I suppose they could pull it off. If they focus more on progressing the action (which they should do), instead of all the down-time between battles (a lot of people would bitch about "character development, but DB is one of the longest-running cartoons ever. We have enough character development), then I think they could fit the Saiya-Jin saga into 1 or 2 movies.

I could see: Radditz coming to Earth as a cliffhanger for DB1, or at the beginning of DB2, and getting defeated. Vegeta and Nappa coming to Earth in the middle of DB2. Nappa getting defeated and the fight with Vegeta either starting at the end of DB2, or at the beginning of DB3. Those the only logical ways I could see them trying to cram all that shit in.

However, most likely, they are going to deviate a lot from the original story, in an effort to make a lot of stuff fit, which will probably change everything. Dunno.

I like those ideas :) I really hope this turns out to be an epic film...running over the 2 hour time frame. Believe it or not, there's a live action dragonball movie already made...it's not official but it's pretty damn good for people who have a low budget. I watched it on youtube. Shooting began on December 3, 2007, at Mexico City, Mexico. Locations included the Universidad Tecnológica de México. From January 2, 2008, the crew will shoot at Durango. The magic begins was horrible. As I understand it...ther's another version (a korean) version of DBZ (or dragonball, I forget) floating around out there. The pics I've seen of the movie were horrible.

and ugh....the new screenshots look awfully tacky, and the poster, too.....reminds me of another american movie based off an anime....Speed Racer, I think, lol....but that movie managed to hold its own though despite that. hopefully DB can do the same....but what the hell, it's blatantly an American movie and Japan's getting it first? Kinda retarded to have a sub/dub release before the raw.

Chow Yun Fat being there makes the movie just a little more legit for its own good, thank god....

no no, I said Speed Racer held its own just fine, it was actually better than I thought (especially on Blu Ray). before it came out, I just thought the trailer made it look hella dumb and tacky, and I doubted it for the longest time.

hey, might go the same for DB...I just think that from the screenshots, it doesn't look too faithful to the anime (and Goku's sposed to have ORANGE pants, and LONGER hair....)

lol, I saw the DOA movie. action was actually pretty decent, and half the girls were fine (kasumi's actress was a terrible choice...I don't know why people find her so attractive)

I'm going to be honest, I thought the dialogue of 300 sucked. DBZ is action-filled so maybe this movie will also be more oriented toward that.

Yeah it can be confusing at times. What most people (like the person who glued that marsters and piccolo pic together) fail to realize is that Piccolo's father is in the live action movie coming out next year, not the Piccolo we know and love who was present in Dragonball Z and GT. His father has really really defined cheekbones. I can't find a picture of him but here's a youtube video of goku fighting Daimo Piccolo (that's piccolo jr's father's name)

Jeff mentioned in the earlier pages that they got the guys who were doing 300 to do this movie or something like that.

hmm, well, I think that just because they might be the same writers (they're not so far, I just checked imdb) that they would write this movie with the same dialogue style, I'm sure they would know better than to do that.

I still think the DB movie still looks tacky as hell, though, lol

but don't worry!! I'll suspend final judgment until I actually see the flick :p

I don't think it ever had a chance of doing good in the box office, unfortunately. As I was telling Jeff, this isn't quite what I envision when I think of a Dragonball movie, but it doesn't look as horrible as the early concepts implied. It looks entertaining, at the very least. I'm still keeping my expectations somewhat low, but I don't think it will be all that bad.

Dude, if they fuck this movie up, I'm going to blow a fuse.

Well, actually we can only hold out hope that they don't kill DBZ. This being a Dragonball movie, hopefully they wil listen to the fan-based shit-storm that is about to head their way after the movie releases, and actually do the sequel (which is more likely to be based on Dragonball Z) right.

I hope they shave that guy who plays Goku. I've seen him in other movies and his hair makes him look nasty when he is shirtless.

Or...I wonder if they will even bother to be true to the show here they whip off their shirts or get them blown off.

K now his hair doesn't look so ridiculous.

I've noticed that. Like in every picture his hair is drastically different. In one pic his hair was like 4 inches and spiked which looks ridiculous, in another he had like a saiyan "Mohawk" which looked laughable...in the pic where he has a backpack on his back it looks..."alright" and in these pics it looks suitable. It's like there throwing out test pics to gauge reactions from the fanbase.

Just judging by the trailer, it actually looks pretty decent to me. But then, I don't watch much anime, and have never seen Dragonball or Dragonball Z, so heh...

Yep, you're right about everything except the dragon crystals bit. They're still called dragonballs. The unofficial live action dragonball movie that came out in the 80's didn't have the copyrights and therefore called their dragonballs Dragon crystals. They also re-named everyone. Goku was Monkey boy. That 80's film is viewable on youtube...pretty good if you're up for laugh.

I am a huge DBZ/DB/DBGT fan (hehe avatar <<) and I am gonna go see da movie the day it comes out. I know it looks like crap, but that is because it was changed to be suitable for people who are not familiar with the series. It will be a great movie...

I'm torn.

You see, on one hand, it seems like a parody movie. It takes the concepts of DB, and puts it in a way that seems like a comical representation of the source material. It doesn't seem to take itself seriously enough to take the idea of the Dragonball series to the level of badassedness that it should have.

On the other hand, the cartoon itself seemed to be sort of a parody of itself. There was so much absurdity and light-hearted humor that it's really hard to expect the movie representation to be the starkly serious, all-around badass portrayal that we'd (or at least I'd) like it to be.

That being said, it still doesn't feel like Dragonball. It seems a bit second rate (like comparing The Mask to Son of the Mask - Dragonball: Evolution being the latter), but it might still be entertaining. I've lost all hope of it being a live-action represenation of the Dragonball universe, though.

Not always true, There was something extremely special about Goku and his decendants. His brother Raditz didn't gain any additional powers close to death or even at his defeat in the Saiyan saga. Even Napa's power never really increased by much right before he was finished. Goku and Vegeta seem to have the ability to tap into some extra source of power. This ability also seemed to have trickle down to their children as well.

By the way Fox is removing all the DBZ videos from Youtube.

If I recall correctly, it isn't that they gain it at being close to death, its when you survive after coming extremely close to death.

Vegeta's first burst of power came after surviving death and being revived by freeza's machines.

As for their children, Goku and Vegeta's children have enhanced powers because of the fact that they are mixed with human blood.

I don't think freeza's machine helped Vegeta ascend to Super Saiyan. Remember Vegeta turned into a Super Saiyan for the first time after the Freeza saga and after wittnessing Goku ascend. Vegeta was trying to dodge that huge asteroid that nearly cost him his life. Only then at that moment did Vegeta ascend. That is the only time he ascending to a higher level on his own. He went SS2 with the help of Babidi and went SS4 with the help of bulma.

The two times Vegeta came near death increased his strength substantially each time. I didn't say it caused him to become a super saiyan, although all known full blood saiyans that have become super saiyan have had near death experiences, apparently including Brolly.

In the Cell Saga, future Trunks ascended to super saiyan three. The actual concept of super saiyans changed dramatically all throughout the making of the dragon ball Z series and those that proceeded it. The true cause of super saiyan abilities is whenever it was necessary to progress the plot.

My point was that when a saiyan is "defeated" he is usually near death. In the case of near death experiences they gain great power after healing. There is no way they couldn't gain new power after being defeated with the premise that if ever defeated you gain greater power.

I see where you're coming from but that doesn't answer Goku's ability to transform into a Super Saiyan 3 after dying. He was never able to gain that ability while he was alive. Even during the cell saga he never went any further than a pumped up Super Sayain as well as Vegeta. Neither one of them went any higher and Cell was beating the crap out of them the entire time.

I would like to point out, the discussion of what causes super saiyan status is really pointless. We are talking about a concept that kept women from becoming super saiyan because the creator couldn't come up with a proper way of creating a super saiyan that looked female.

But the Story line doesn't say just that. The story line explains different alternatives to a Saiyan ascending to different levels. Oh yeah You hit the nail right on the coffin. This was what I've been trying to explain but you've worded it much better than I. Vegeta also let his pride go during the final episodes of the buu saga after the fusion of Vegito but he never ascended any further even after Kidd buu nearly killed him. Vegeta at this moment was definately a changed person. Not the same gun ho Vegeta from the previous series.

Nah. It's always been (as far as I know) that a Saiya-Jin's power increases after recovery from great injury. I believe it was Vegeta who first explained this to Goku, but I could be wrong. I'll try to find something that explains it definitively.

That was the Saiya-Jin in him (the living for a good fight). That is what all Saiya-Jins fight for. But ever since he was a boy, Goku began fighting for something much more than that. That is a duality that most people (I've noticed) don't seem to recognize about Goku, but they portray it well. Even he says constantly that he is an Earthling first, before a Saiya-Jin. Most importantly to him, he fights "the good fight," but there are moments where he does show that he's enjoying the challenge, even when the fate of the world is lying in the balance. Those are the fights I'm talking about. The fights where he ascends and/or gets stronger. He always spars and trains with others because he loves a good fight, but when it comes down to the epic battles, he always fights because there is so much more at stake. It is then where he truly shines and gives it his all.

Vegeta lived for the challenge, too (which is why he always challenged Goku), but he was deluded into thinking that he was always the strongest. He always fought as hard as he could until he had it set in his mind that he could not win. Then he always bitched out.

You equated my statement to mean it was what caused super saiyan status, I merely stated the fact that if the rule is after defeat you become stronger if you survive then every time you are defeated you will gain strength. It makes a little more sense than your implication that it kept any female from going SSJ, seeing as how Pan (the only female SaiyaJin - or partial SaiyaJin - introduced into the series since Bardock's teamate, before Goku came to Earth) had only a small fraction of SaiyaJin blood.

Pretty amateurish lapse in continuity by Toriyama, I must admit. (Hell, I could design a female Super SaiyaJin in a very short amount of time.) But, when it comes to the earliest part of the discussion, I give so much more credit to the earlier stages of the DBZ universe (and the thought put into the characters) than I do the characters around the GT era. I don't have any reason to discredit the catalysts to characters like Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and even Trunks transforming into ascended states than I do characters like Goten and Pan. In such a case, I don't think the topic of what turns a SuperSaiyaJin into a SuperSaiyaJin is irrelevant, but that is my own bias. Hell, I refuse to even recognize much of the DBZ universe, from the Buu Saga on, because I feel that it all started falling apart after the fall of Cell, but that's just me.

A Saiyan never gained an excessive amount of strength that made a difference in a battle without powering up to Super Saiyan. So cranking up to Super Saiyan does matter each time they become stronger after defeat. I cannot think of one episode where a Saiyan has gained the ability to become much stronger without ascending.

A gain in strength is the cause for Super Saiyan status because this is an increase in powering up. But like I mentioned earlier. Goku increased his "strength" through intense training, in which he was far more stronger once he came back to earth during the buu saga. Not that you're wrong - because as far as innate SaiyaJin abilities go, that statement is completely correct - but there is always the matter of skills the SaiyaJins learn which cause them to become much stronger during battle.

Goku's Kaiyo-Ken attack is one example, and Vegeta has a technique that he said is much the same as the Kaiyo-Ken, both of which do increase the SaiyaJins' powers exponentially.

What about Gohans ability learned from one of the Kais tomaintain his power while not being in super saiyan form? i forget what its called, but it was during the Buu saga, thats how he maintains stands against the androids in Trunks alternate future in his normal form.

Not to mention the fusion techniques.

No, I don't see your point, because you aren't arguing against what I've said. You are arguing against something I never said. Apparently to you a gain in strength means, and must only mean, gaining super saiyan status.

Forgive me for saying the factual statement that if defeated and critically injured a Saiyan's powers will rise as long as they are still alive upon defeat. I know you want to argue that I was saying that it is the only way they gained strength, even though in every post I've made I've explained to you that near death is only one of the ways they gain strength, but you're arguing against something I'm not saying.

Actually, I think it's a pretty badass idea for an alien species, seeing as how even the human muscular system does the exact same thing. The more worn-out we make our muscles, the stronger they become upon healing (in fact, the ideal point that bodybuilders work toward, to build more muscle mass, is complete muscular failure). Yeah I forgotten about Kaiyo-ken but I thought Kaiyoken was just a more efficient way of powering up for Goku. I never thought it made him stronger I just thought it helped increased his energy wave potential. Perhaps Im wrong, Im going to have to check out the earlier episodes again.

I agree it really did. On the other hand his power up abilities were pretty impressive. It wasn't anything close to being as good as Goku's SSJ3 power up while facing off with Fat Buu but it was pretty decent.

The moment I figured out that your point was that their power doesn't just come from near death experiences, I made the one and only point that needed to be made, "the statement that after near death experiences you gain greater power doesn't preclude being able to gain power without having to go through a near death experience."but you kept on talking and talking for no reason, even now you are arguing against something I never said. Just watched the movie.

It was pretty much as to be expected. It had its good moments, but was kinda lame overall. Chatwin made a better young Goku than I thought he would, and the romance between him and Chi-Chi was actually pretty good. It did seem kind of "B-movie with good special effects"-ish, though. I think it was actually better in the beginning but got a bit worse during the end, because they didn't really deliver on the serious epic-battle-ness.

Maybe a 60/100, overall, adjusting for "just pure fun" factor, though I'll save a real scoring until after I've seen a better-than-cam version.

So..I watched the movie last night. As I watched it, coincidentally my childhood memories got raped in the process.

WHATA HECK? Did ya see that. Bandai and McDonalds are sponsors or something. But wow I loved the animation and modern colors. I bet production cost are high, They wont let low budget animation get in their way this time. I'm very excited for this new version/re-imagining.

I would love this...

But I'd probably hate it more because I just know there would be some really cute anime girl on there and some-point in the story she'll get killed in the most horrible way possible, and won't ever come back, so then I'll stop watching it.

But I'd love to see this kind of DBZ too!

Yeah. Chi chi was referred to, in one episode, as the 'strongest woman in the world', if I remember correctly.

And I remember the instance you're talking about. She had a red aura, if I'm not mistaken. I believe it was when she was infected with the "black water" (was that it?) stuff in the Garlic Jr. saga.

So I saw the movie yesterday... LAME!!!!! Hahaha even with expectations of lameness, it was super-lame. I'm glad I had been drinking before :D

Haha. This was dope. Somebody took the audio from one of those Toonami promos of DBZ and used it with clips from the movie to make a commercial.

It makes the movie look 1000x better. Lol.

Read your 1st draft of the script. Saw the movie. I didn't like it. Wasn't faithful to the source like Sin City,300,Watchmen & Iron Man were.
Though I noticed your script had more homages to the manga.
Did you read the whole manga before writing or did you watch part of the anime for research?

I know you didnt have a hand in preventing FOX or James Wong in changing the script or making the choices for cast.
But I feel you should of hinted that Goku was Asian more in the 1st script, maybe that would of made a difference (probably not).

I dont like FOX. They dip their hand way too much in the film process.
I know they originally wanted Stephen Chow to direct this (he couldnt; was filming CJ7 at the time), so they made him honorary "advisory" producer (thuogh not listening to any of his ideas) and marketed his name and face as main producer in Asia (even though the producer was really Tim Van Rellim).

Also using Joon Park (not even a martial artist..a Korean Pop Singer...they took out your 2 fight scenes with Yamcha & Goku)

To help hype the movie in Asia (selling out) and cast that Justin Chatwin guy as Goku (who to me, Goku was always basically a Jackie Chan on paper...hell, he's influenced by the first Drunken Master movie)

But your use of high school plot device wasnt even needed. Nor was the romance. You're basically pandering to "nerd geeks" who like Dragon Ball, which isnt the case.
Dragon Ball is so popular for so many reasons to so many different types of people around the world. It isnt just popular to "nerd geeks" who you feel can 'identify' on film with the cliche 'high school outcast'.
Its basically like trying to modernize The Jungle Book or Tarzan.
People would be like "WTF".

Also what FOX doesnt realize is that Goku is Asia's "Superman"

Probably not.
I know Will Smith was offered the role of Superman but turned it down because, his words: "I didnt want to offend the white fans. I already did something similar with Jim West in Wild Wild West"

The movie probably financially would have done better interntationally considering the majority of DB fans are in Asia since the story's been popular there since 1984m, and the U.S. only got wind of the story in 1998.

Also, lets say there even is a sequel; yur script opened too many plotholes for future stories to make sense.
Still trying to figure out how Piccolo knows about Goku since he was trapped in a jar for 2000 years.
Many non fans are also trying to figure that one out.

I know the movie process is a joint handed effort; not bashing you totally here, but I honestly thought that since the movie industry has come so far in HW with upping the bar in quality that story like this would have gotten the Lord of The Rings Epic trilogy treatment, and not be under budgeted with an inferior director, weak script (dude its weak cmon) and miscast, which is really insensitive to the Asian community.

I mean, whens the last time you seen an Asian male superhero?
Whens the last time you seen an Asian male lead get the girl?
Or whens the last time you seen an Asian female lead that got the guy that wasnt Asian?
Maybe Asian American community doesnt stick up for themselves in HW. Maybe HW is still guilty of Yellowface and being Ethnocentric/Eurocentric.
But in this day and age, where Blacks and Hispanics have made advances in HW (small), I thought at least this movie could have broken some barriers.
My little brother drove from NY to LA 2 years ago to break into the movie business. I would hope HW wasnt like this and could 'grow up' for his sake.

The truth of the matter, brother, is that Hollywood is a racist town. The people in power want to make movies that they think will sell. They believe that white leads will sell better than non-whites.

I read all Dragonball Mangas and a few of the DBZ mangas and I watch tons of videos. I based my draft on the "Saga of Goku" and the "King Piccolo saga." If you read the draft that was on line that wasn't my 1st draft. My first draft didn't have Goku in High school. And it started off with an extensive prologue about King piccolo first invasion of earth and his defeat at the hands of Master Mutaito.

Emperor Pilaf Mai and Shu return and free Piccolo who wants the Dragonballs to regain his youth. Roshi, Goku and company want the dragonballs to summon Master Mutaito's return.

My first draft was too budget prohibitive so it was scaled back considerably. I wrote at least 5 drafts of that movie. I'm not even sure of the one that was rewritten for the screen. I had nothing to do with the production process at all. I never met with the producers or directors. I wish I had.

My draft was a departure from the source material, but I tried to maintain the spirit of the Mangas. My main problem was making Goku a teen but having him on the same adventure that the child Goku was on. I gave cameos to many other characters like Krillen, The Ox King, Tambourine, Suno, Puar, Oolong and Androids.

I think if they did my 1st draft more hardcore fans would have dug it. On the real though, Dragonball and Dragonball Z is a hard property to try to make a live action, feature film out of. I think It would have been a better animated joint with top-flight pixar quality digital animation.

Sorry you didn't like the DBE. But look our for Blood and Bone. It's a fight film that I directed staring Michael Jai White. If you like REAL fighting you'll dig this movie. "
