last movie you saw - and what did you think of it?

Big Bad Wolves - Holy Jesus of Nazareth. I can see why Quentin Tarantino called it the best film of the year. It's his style movie, only darker than anything he's ever dared to make. Warning, I'm not kidding when I say it's dark. It's not just a comedy.

Friday I saw the new Godzilla, and it was a fucking masterpiece. I didn't agree with a few of the moves Gareth Edwards made in the movie, but nonetheless, it was still a fantastic movie. 9/10 for me.
Saturday night I watched The Descent with my friends. It was decent(lol punny). It had its good jump scares, but a lot of them were quite predictable to be honest. The movie had its moments though to be fair. I went to sleep that night with no fear of nightmares. It wasn't half as scary as my friends hyped me to believe. I've seen scarier. Otherwise, I thought it was an interesting movie, and it makes a good horror film still. 7/10.

Legend of the Drunken Master - Fucking awesome

I watched the following three films today. In my opinion (though incidentally) I watched them in order of worst to best. But they're all very high quality films. They're all spectacular in their own way but the following order represents how they compare.

Oblivion - Following an invasion by an alien species, mankind has nuked its planet into desolation. Humanity now lives on Titan, but to power the moon's terraform process, a small portion of humanity remains in orbit around earth supervising a two person team left on the surface to oversee the conversion of water into hydrogen fuel cells. One member of this two person team is Tom Cruise, who has the job of repairing the drones that protect the conversion plants from the remnant alien faction fighting a guerrilla war to topple humanity's efforts. Whatever Tom Cruise's reputation as an over the top, insane religious zealot, he has a knack for appearing in heart pounding sci-fi action/thrillers, and this one's no exception. At times, it feels a little bit like a live action version of Portal 2 without the portals, but there's nothing wrong with that.

About Time - I had reservations about seeing this one because, well, I'd already seen a time-travel romance film starring Rachel McAdams as the wife of a time traveler and I didn't really feel like watching another one. But make no mistake, this isn't at all a similar movie. This one's set up more like Butterfly Effect, where the time traveler can only affect his own life, and so it deals with the theme of choices, ripples and regret. However, while Butterfly Effect concentrates on the catch 22 of making decisions, this film glosses over action's unforeseen consequences and the dilemma of choice, as well paradoxes revolving around time travel in general. Those elements are not crucial to the story being told, so they're mostly left out. Instead we see something orbiting more closely to Groundhog Day, though rather than focused on a single day it focuses on a single lifetime and the ability to craft one's lifetime into perfection. It opens up a new dilemma that other time travel movies never seem to address. Where the greatest choice in those films see to be to not exist at all, because the Catch-22 creates losers no matter how you spin it, About Time asks what happens even if you can make everything go perfectly, even if you can savor your lifetime twice and correct each mistake. And the answer, of course, is that it's still never enough.

Mr. Nobody - Yes. No. If you watched About Time and felt cheated by the way it glosses over chaos theory and the deeper implications of the dilemma of choice, then fear not for Mr. Nobody explores just that to astonishing perfection. It took me half a minute to get into it, the initial jumps between stories and reality are a little confusing, but quickly enough I couldn't peel myself away. It's 2.5 hours so make sure you're feeling focused and alert, but it'll pull you into a fantastic journey. Whatever choices you end up with in your life, make sure watching this film is one of them.

Does a Katt Williams comedy special count? Because if so, I watched that last and enjoyed it immensely.

That man is so honest and intense he sweats like a preacher up there dressed to the nines and doing his thing. Such delivery.

I haven't laughed that hard in a while, it felt like good therapy.

Jumper. Started off with a really intriguing concept and then proceeded to fall apart rapidly from there.

Essentially it's the story of a super villain. He gets a power and immediately decides to use it to rob banks, alleviating his guilty conscience by leaving IOU's!!?? Say what - there's no way in hell he's ever going to be able to pay back all those millions of dollars, except by robbing more banks!! Unless he plans somewhere down the road to go straight, get a really excellent job, and then I guess break back into the banks and leave piles of money on the floor in the vaults? And after stealing the money he transforms from a simp with no self esteem to a suave confident stud. I guess that could happen if you suddenly got the power to freely ignore boundaries with no consequences, but he's just a thoroughly unlikable guy all around in addition to an entitled self-centered thief. At that point I thought it was going to be about how he learns that you have to take responsibility, but no - apparently the writers think he's a likable person and has no moral issues, or possibly they thought it was a study of a conflicted antihero, but it's most definitely not that. It very nearly falls into the same slot as movies giving a back story on a villain, like the Star Wars prequels or the Rob Zombie reboot of Halloween (except of course that he's not a killer, just a bank robber). There really wasn't one likable character in the whole thing. I think the main problem was that they didn't try to make it an origin story of a hero, more like they were thinking "wouldn't it be cool if you had this power - what's the first thing you'd do?" - so what they ended up with is something based on superhero powers (taken straight from Nightcrawler), but it's not a superhero story. Except that in every other respect it's structured like one, with an evil organization who makes it their job to hunt down and kill jumpers. Oh, and I could not believe this - so, the last anybody saw of this guy he fell through the ice into the river and never came back up, right? Then years later he shows up again and nobody says "Dude - what the hell - I thought you were dead??!!" - no, instead they just all act like he hasn't been around for a while. Just one of many hurr de durrs.

Ok, you know what - it's impossible to really do a coherent review or analysis of an incoherent movie. And I just don't have enough interest to put any more effort into it, so screw it. Really just wanted to bitch about some of the glaring flaws in what could have been a cool movie.

There was an article breaking down all the use of color and such. It was such a sad love story. Did you see Primer? That was the director's other movie.

Watched Amazing Spider-Man 2, and I thought it was better than people were saying. Glad about that one.

Ah - this all sounds right up my street!
I saw Oblivion, and quite liked it, too - it's an action, low-philosophy science-fiction - but enjoyable - and agreed on Cruise - very good actor.
I tried Primer in English, and it doesn't happen often, but I gave up and planned on watching it in German or at least with subtitles - great reminder, thanks! I felt, it would be a shame, if I couldn't follow every detail of it.

Ginger Snaps - Awesome movie, gory, dark and fun

I had to give this movie a second chance so i watched "The Great Gatsby" 2013....so far...it was OKay...only funny part i laughed was when Gatsby first met his former GF. He nudged the clock a few times then it fell. :laughhard: lol. 4/5.

Watched The Lone Survivor and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Both excellent films in my opinion.

( The Man from Nowhere) A Korean Action/Thriller- It's about a quiet pawnshop keeper with a violent past takes on a drug- and organ trafficking ring in hope of saving the child who is his only friend. It has a good pace, and the action is not over done. Granted this movie isn't for very sensitive viewers but you can't help but be pulled into the story. The soundtrack with this movie will also have you moved.

It makes no sense: it wasn't created to make sense. Like everything around and inside us, sense is ultimately a vanity, while we run around naked calling ourselves people.

A few hours ago I watched Scarface, damn man I love Tony Montana. He says "I only have two things in this world, my balls and my word, and I don't break them for nobody!". Al pacino made this movie work, it it weren't for him this movie would be like wet potato chips.

You know, after watching so many gangster movies I am thinking it's not all that bad to be a drug dealer or in the mafia. Only the people already involved in that world get killed, right?

Watched it yesterday and I really liked it. I'm a bit wary of recommending it - clearly not everybody's thing. Saying it is of a psychotic mood surely doesn't do it an injustice, creepy "artsy" stuff. Thank you for the recommendation!

I really don't understand how people can stand that psychotic bulldung. What I like is just a cheesy, entertaining movie that doesn't go too slow and doesn't focus too much on having a deep meaning. Like Pulp Fiction, you know? That's almost the perfect movie :P

I watched Revolver last night, with Jason Statham as the main character and Archy from Rock'nRolla plays in it (Mark Strong). It's cheesy, entertaining, fast, but also has a very strong storyline and it I didn't really understand it. I might have to watch it one or two more times to get it.

Finally watched Titan A.E., don't know how I haven't seen it until now! While I thought it was a bit short I still loved it.

Yo StephL, I saw Will Ferrell in 2 or 3 Saturday night live Skit and he is hilarious! Especially in the sensitive sarj scene :P

I saw The Untouchables a few days ago and it's a pretty good movie. It really draws you in and gets to your sentimental side, you live with the characters. It's a really good quality movie and I think anyone who watches movies a lot or is easily bored with movies will enjoy this one.
