If I wanted to control the world.. Hm.
I'm surprised no one has made mention of manipulating media outlets yet.
Perhaps I can illustrate how I'd rule the world best by telling you how I play the game of monopoly. In monopoly, my first objective is to dominate a set color on the board so that I can build houses or hotels. I do this often times by giving those who have the land I want obscene amounts of money for their land so I can get my set color (I know that if I play my cards right, it doesn't matter how much money I give them. I'll get it right back in the long run). Then, I build houses or hotels.. depending on how much money they have. After that, I continue buying up land and making deals with my competitors by offering them obscene amounts of money (their money really that they've given me) in exchange for more property. After I have every area on the board dominated. I tear down my houses and let the other players continue passing go and collecting 200 dollars. I do this because I know they are paying me taxes everywhere they go. If they start amassing more money than I would like, I simply build houses to take that away from them and tear them down when I'm satisfied with their earnings. I control the board, and I control their wages. They work for me. I continue this until I get bored of playing boss and just build hotels everywhere and bankrupt everyone. Game over.
How I would go about applying that to real world situations, I'm unsure about but I'd find a way.

The most important thing to do is to monopolize the media in such a way as to still give the impression that the media is free. That way you can control whatever information makes it to the public, but the public will still be unaware that the information is controlled.
