My wife is a vegetarian. Not vegan.
I thought this would be more of an issue with regards to our eating habits. That is not the case. There is a lot of choices. When I want meat We just prepare it separate.
The reason she has chosen to be a vegetarian is because the thought of eating flesh -meat and muscle grosses her out.
I know many are against the killing of animals.

I used to be a vegetarian. Might go back to being one at some point in the future. Time will tell! :)
I want to be a vegetarian, because meat is starting to personally gross me out. And plus I don't feel too hot when I eat it. :/
No beef, chicken, pork, etc. Try to drink soy or rice milk when I can. Try to keep eggs to a minimum. Still eat seafood and am a little lost as to what I should replace that part of my diet with. Beans? What else? And from what I understand I HAVE to have B vitamins, which are animal derived, correct?
In summary, on my way to living as compassionate a life as I can, while still remaining healthy and open to the idea that I may have to consume SOME animal products. The compassion part also refers to humans as well. Except that I don't eat them, so I'll have to find other ways to be compassionate towards humans.
When I first stopped eating meat and cut EVERYTHING out, I felt like I was floating on a cloud most of the time, I felt sooooo good. But then I didn't really stick with it and got confused, didn't do much research, started eating a lot of seafood, milk, cheese, etc. And now I feel completely different again.
Bleh. I'm so doing my research this year and getting back to where I used to be.
Ditto! :) I didn't even stop because I thought eating meat was wrong, I just stopped because of the circumstances at that time. But I couldn't deny how much healthier it made me feel! I've learned that I'm one of those people who is better off without meat, but at the same time I need to keep up with my vitamins.
If you're missing certain vitamins, just a regular multivitamin pill thing should work fine. Most women have low iron as well, so just something to keep in mind.
Ditto. I was vegan for 3-4 years. My only real problem was hospitality--both giving and receiving. My friends went out of the way to offer me things, and I didn't want to feel I was imposing. In general, I came to feel cut off from the mainstream, and wanted to dive in again to get some perspective. That said, I felt mostly healthier and more energetic when I was vegan, and as a side effect I was relying less on convenience food and eating a more varied/balanced diet. Now that I'm getting more settled in my new city (and finding my variance from the mainstream is independent of diet;)), I might swing back to veganism in the spring. Right now I have a pretty weird diet--red meat and poultry are unappetizing, so I eat pigs and fish, along with cheese and eggs, though I don't like milk and really only eat eggs if my options are limited. Compassion certainly played into the original decision, and avoidance of dogmatism into resuming meat, but mostly I go by craving.
P.S. I seem to make more sense to other people when I'm vegan :shrug:
I honestly think the best way is to slowly cut things out. Cheese and seafood are probably two of the hardest ones for me. But I totally had my fill of seafood in the last year. I'm pretty much completely bored of it and only eat it now because I don't know what else to do at the moment.
Cheese will be an entirely other journey. I love that stuff. Insanely.
But anyway, I feel now like I can give up seafood and never go back because I really got my fill of it.
And pork, chicken, etc. was easy enough because I don't care about that stuff to begin with.
Anyway, go slow and let yourself take as long as you need for certain things. I've been at this for about 2.5 years, and I'm happy with my progress. My view is that I have my whole life to do this "all the way."

I don't really understand the whole thing about feeling good not eating meat. I live on a student's budget, so I can't afford much meat. Even so, when I go home and have a proper meal with meat, it tastes so good. I guess it just varies from person to person.
I've been a vegetarian for 25 years now.
It wasn't so easy back in the 80s. It's a breeze nowadays.
I'm no vegetarian, but two of my absolute favourite restaurants are vegan. I make sure I hang out with lots of healthy-looking vegetarians and vegans, cause they have great taste in food. The keyword, of course, is "healthy-looking" hehe.
Vegetarian 8 years. I hate factory farming methods, and don't hunt unless it is a survival issue. In any case, meat is full of crap these days and too expensive for what you are getting.
I starting eating a RAW vegan diet last year and kept it up most of the year. I did it for health reasons. I have a sister that has cancer, and it kills me to see what she is going through.
Before the diet change, I was starting to feel tired alot and have aches and pains, and I knew I needed to eat better or I might get cancer myself. I researched and found that this diet is very anti-cancer. I feel so good when I eat this way. And I really feel that this is the healthiest way to eat. I went off the diet for a bit last fall--and it was amazing how different I felt. But I started up again this month and it only took me a few day to feel better again.
I do miss some foods. But it is more important to me to be healthy and feel good.
So what do I eat? Raw fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, olive oil, raw cocoa, and a few other misc raw food items.
A friend of mine went vegetarian. He became very sick. Then again, he is the foolish impressionable type.
Yeah, if you go vegie and keep the same diet, just without the meat, you'll probably become sick... If you get sick really quickly, it's a big sign that your diet wasn't varied enough to begin with.
But like I said... some of the best cooking I've ever tried was vegetarian. There's this one restaurant in Montreal that doesn't even have a menu. The chef comes out and basically says "this is what you'll have"... and you won't argue, cause it tastes friggin amazing (like, I found myself scraping at the soup bowl to not let the little bisque remains go to waste).
I tried to be a vegetarian for about 2 weeks once and then gave up. because of the following reasons
i might try it again do to the fact that people are saying that vegetarian food is like an orgasm in your taste buds.
- Meat is delicious murder
- Tofu tastes like crap
- I don't like mushrooms (besides raw portabella and the magic varieties)
- Eating meat has no moral implications for me
- We're all going to die eventually, so i like to live a little by eating what i want without caring about it's health effects.
- Fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive here
- It's hard to grow your own food do to the fact that summer lasts 3-4 months and fruit trees take too long to grow.

Yeah, It all depends how you prepare the food, I've had some rather subpar veggie food, and I've had some veggie food that made my mouth orgasm.
There is some really good veggie food.
I love the veggie stir-fry.
