While I've encountered racism (both for being white and not being white enough) a handful of times in three decades, my blondish hair and blue eyes have bought me more free passes than I can count--with cops, employers, landlords, girls' parents, service workers, clients... I'd take rich over white if it were up to me, but I can't complain.
The overwhelming majority of people who've assumed I'm a white racist were themselves white racists, thinking they had a friendly ear. In my experience, non-white people with white friends are mostly oblivious to the degree of prejudice directed at them by white people who think they're in 'safe' company. It's much less prevalent in generations born since 1970 or so, but far more common behind closed doors than a lot of us would like to think.
