He's dirt poor, so can't afford to hire you. The government will appoint him attorney, but we both know that those attorneys handle many cases and can't give him enough time to really fight for him (in the analogy, this is chip and free clinics), the circumstantial evidence is strong. Without a good lawyer, he goes to jail.
Would you give him free legal council? If you say yes, that's giving valuable resources to those who need help for free (socialized medicine,) if you say no, you're an asshole.
