It's sort of a new flu. Isn't it just an 'extra' strand? I think that's why there's all of the hype. It's been turning everyone into hypochondriacs.

Dying from a virus is natural too, and not anyone's fault. Overpopulation would be all of our fault. Because we didn't lower our birthrate.
I'd never be HAPPY that people died either, you've misunderstood. But I'd be happy that MORE people didn't die.
what animal says "gee golly, we should lower our birthrate" :hrm:
blame mother nature herself for giving us the edge
That statement didn't even make any sense in regards to what I said.
I was strictly saying, that mother nature hasn't given us an edge at all. More people would die form overpopulation then a virus. Point and fact.
On the other hand, 'mother nature' also gave us the edge of having a fucking right brain. To be able to look at the situation and say, "okay if we become more 'in tune' with nature in what we do, we will be able to avoid mass extinction in the future". By in tune I mean, less people, less consumption, less mining of harmful chemicals etc.
So all in all, your little one-liners do shit all for your weak argument.
:bump:
The WHO has just declared it an official pandemic: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/...0gOYQD98OH0U00
I thought that everybody pretty much forgot about it. Are they just trying to scare people now?
Probably. I haven't heard of the Mexican flu in ages either.
It's all complete bullcr*p if you ask me. It could mutate though, which means it's a potential threat; but not quite yet.
Yeah, apparently Victoria, Australia made it a pandemic lol
Thanks you unhygienic bastards.
What the hell are you guys talking about? The WHO is a vital organisation respected throughout the world, not a media machine.
They made it quite clear in the statement that elevation to pandemic levels does not mean that the virus has become more dangerous, it has simply satisfied the scientific criteria for a pandemic, being widespread and continuing transmission in more than one continent.
The problem is not how many people this thing has killed at the moment, it's the fact that come winter it'll be spreading very quickly indeed and may mutate into something much more serious and kill unknown millions of people, as the Spanish flu of 1918 did.
Well, they changed the criteria for Pandemic, it has to affect a certain number of people now I think. Not just spread around the Earth.
This was because they didn't want to freak people out like the media did at first.
I don't know who was complaining about the WHO being media?
I don't think anyone was. We were saying the MEDIA likes the hypeness.
Odd Nonposter seemed to be pretty clear... "The WHO has just declared it an official pandnemic... are they just trying to scare people now?".
I think most people just don't know what the WHO is... isn't it 40 years since they last declared a pandemic? They are in a position of immense responsibility and it's something they don't take lightly.
Every flu every year is a pandemic, I don't know why they don't call them pandemics. So maybe they ARE just trying to scare people? lol
I doubt it but it would be because the media brought so much attention they had to do something.
I didn't intend to say that the WHO are trying to scare people: the news media are. I forgot to mention that just about every news station is playing it like its a really big deal, when it has just about faded from everybody's mindset entirely.
i havent read the whole discussion, so sorry if this has already been said.
swine flu has a very high spread rate, that is why everyone is panicking. but im not really panicking, because it is very easily treated, apart from rare cases. infact there is someone critically ill in a hospital near me and he spread it to a doctor, and my mum works there. but there is no chance of her getting it so im not worried about that. nor am i worried about the 3 possible cases of swine flu in my school.
Ah no.
They only just changed it so it has to have a certain amount of severity as well. Pandemics only just now has been changed to mean that it kills a set number of people. Dunno what that number is.
But maybe seasonal epidemic makes more sense for the normal flu, never heard about that.
The Who is a joke, along with this virus.
Agreed, apparently they haven't changed the qualifications for a pandemic at all now. They just delayed it because they didn't want to create fear. How scientific....
What is wrong with your brain?
Seriously, just read up about epidemiology, the WHO, and in particular the spread of the Spanish flu of 1918, before attempting to speak with any authority about your mad conspiracy theories.
Anybody who thinks that infectious disease is not an extremely important problem for the human race has been, I'm afraid, completely nullified into a mindset of false security by modern society. Which is kind of ironic considering that's the exact opposite of what you preach.
A second ago spreading fear was a bad thing. How consistent.Quote:

The WHO acts in a way that will minimise any damage of any infectious disease, and so communicating with the press in a calm and controlled manner is very high up their list of priorities.
It's actually completely consistent. You're just looking at it the wrong way. Surface details.
I was saying before that the MEDIA was spreading fear. They weren't being scientific, we didn't know anything about this virus then. They were acting like the world was going to end.
Then we learned a bit more and we know it's highly contagious, but very non-lethal. And the WHO decide to delay calling it a pandemic just to stop fear.
Spreading fear is a bad thing. I never said it wasn't. But spreading fear isn't always a result of bringing people's attention to the issue. The media makes it that way. Yet the who compromised science (telling people it's a pandemic) simply to delay fear.

Guys, get with the program.
Swine flu is soo two months ago.
Swine flu is a danger because it kills (untreated, i think) 0.1% of it's carriers. That doesn't really seem so bad, but it's main victims are the young and healthy, as opposed to the old and frail of regular flu. At the moment we have a treatment for it, but if it mutates to be resistant to our treatments and/or more viral, it could be very bad. I don't want to know what eliminating one thousandth of the working population of the world will do.
LOL LOL You just come in and restate what's been said, about a month too late.
MOST pandemics are like that, killing people whose immune systems over react to the virus, thus killing themselves. This Swine Flu doesn't do that. It's only killing people with weak immune systems. You don't need a vaccine for this. I am NEVER getting a flu vaccine, you do not need them. Poorer, starving countries maybe. Not here.
OMG HAHA That's so true. But it should have a thing outside the circles "Smart People"
