Worst thing a girl can so is "No", right? Think again...

Ok, so I'm doing a report on suicides and I've come across some very sad stories. The MySpace mom incident, some usual school bullying...

But you know how people tell you when you want to ask a girl out, and they say the worse thing they can do is say "No"?

Well, this is the story about Ryan Halligan. A student that was bullied in High School. Now, I just want to say that this certain passage didn't drive him to die by suicide.

All I really want to say is, if you see someone who looks depressed or down, just say "Hi" to them. It'll make their day much much better.

Also, this thread isn't meant to put those down who want to ask a girl out. I'm just saying that some people should really think about what they're doing.

Are you saying not to ask girls out? I've been rejected before, I just shrugged it off and kept it moving...she doesn't know what she is missing...like a big fat meatstick in her...oh well.....there's plenty more girls in the world..seriously. To not try and ask girls out anymore because you were rejected is foolish.

There was also another really bad case where someone overdosed infront of a live audience on webcam on some webcam site. After the people he was talking to found out that he overdosed it was 12 hours until cops found him. He had bi-polar disorder or something, but the people shouldn't have pressured him into doing that.

A very sad and tragic story. As the site mentions, very few people would have had the resilience to deal with such a thing as such a difficult point in one's life.

People picked on me and physically bullied me in middle school...briefly. I ended up in the office twice for injuring students who picked on me back in sixth grade. They told me they would call the police the next time I hit someone (because the second time, they lost their front tooth), but by then my point was made. Nobody ever touched me or even said anything bad about me ever again. And I got respect.

I'm not nessecarily suggesting that violence is the answer but...okay, let's not bullshit, it is. If someone TOUCHES me, they receive a serious injury. All there is to it.

lol mini, I was the same way in high school. After I got my first win, no one fucked with me ever again..and I seriously was the man in there.. girls liked me, and the fellas wanted to hang with me.

A lot of bullies are cowards. You stand up to them and they'll crumble.

That is absolutely the truth. Truly tough people who like to fight join boxing leagues or enter karate tournaments and stuff. Idiots who screw with people who don't even like to fight are completely pathetic.

This reminds me of Dane Cook talking about how he talks to the "weird" guy at the office. Then when the guy goes on a shooting spree, he doesn't shoot you. I can't find the video of it on Youtube at the moment, I'll link it later.

Does anybody else find it crazy how standing up for yourself by acts of physical violence makes your fellow teenagers suddenly see you in a positive light? I back hand slapped a kid on the bus last year and the very same day every kid who witnessed it was saying "hi" to me in the halls and shaking my hand.

I was never bullied in high school though. I think if I was, and I applied my Punch-Them-Straight-In-The-Teeth® method, I would have so had a better HS experience.

Yes, I do find it a little crazy, although it's a very powerful method of standing
up for oneself. It sends a clearer message of "You can't walk on me" than
telling a guy off with words. It doesn't mean it's more significant, since words
display intelligence, but because of violence's taboo and sudden, unexpected
use, it may be a better representation of your negative feelings towards
another.

Yeah. Stabbed a kid in the arm with a pencil last year because I was tired of taking his shit. Everybody else was tired of this obnoxious kid as well.

I had people shaking my hand in the hallway for days afterward. People I didn't even know were congratulating me in the halls ten minutes afterward.

It's interesting. I once headbutted some complete shit who was trying to bully me, gave him a wonderful black eye as well. People were congratulating me for years afterwards on how amazing it was.

I don't know, maybe it's because these days fewer people are prepared to stand up for themselves in such a manner. It's a very visible sign that you won't tolerate shit either, which in itself commands respect.

Probably also routed in evolutionary history as well. Physical dominance is a very animalistic way of getting respect and submission. A very alpha-male kind of thing.

@ OP: Yeah some pretty effed up stuff happens. But alas nothing we can do about it but learn and not follow suit. And yes, showing a polite gesture as simple as a Hi can brighten up somebody's day. *knows from experience*

Heh, if I didn't have to speak to communicate, I would be quite the chatterbox. If people could talk by thinking to each other, I'd probably be much more extroverted. But as is, being around people for too long is mentally taxing. :?

@op, Wow, that is a harsh story. A lot of crap happened to me in middle school, but nothing as bad as this. Some of the POS "friends" I had knew who I liked, and threatened to tell her i stalked her if i didn't give them some of my lunch ( i always packed lunch from home so i had lots of good stuff). One day, a real friend told me to just screw it and not give them anything and they wouldn't actually say anything. they did, and I was devastated. I cant imagine HER saying stuff about me. Luckily, she was cool about it, and I don't think that she believed it (although i don't really know, because I haven't talked to her since, but she is nice to me.

mmm, i wouldn't quite agree with that, at least not in my school. There is a girl who i have been friends with since before I even liked girls. She is part of the "popular" crowd, but she is still as nice and cool. My school, however is a sort of small school, so there are not as much predefined groups i guess. really, i guess there are the "popular" girls and football players, then the gifted/honers group(that I am in) although most of the time, the "popular" girls are in gifted, so sometimes they sit with us/talk to us, but most of the time they stay with the football players (which I personally don't understand why football is such a big deal, apart form living in america.)

also, I am always nice to the kids who are picked on for (seemingly, i don't really know) no reason. For one thing, it is horrible to just be mean to people so that people think you are funny, and secondly if they decide to go on some shooting, they may spare me and i wont feel sorry for the other people. thing is at this school, there are not really any bullies, it is more the whole school ( i am not one, luckily).

Wow, this thread popped up out of nowhere.

In response to the OP though, I had a very similar situation happen to me when I was in elementary school, except the boy was the one humiliating me.

Even though it didn't have the same tragic result as the story mentioned, the mark it left on my self-esteem and ability to trust others lasted for an surprisingly long time.

I think that's all in the past now. But even now, in times of emotional stress [especially those spurred by close relationships] I sometimes wonder if my severe reactions are directly related to the the way felt the day that happened, considering it was at a very formative time in my life.

Some people write off bullying as "oh kids will be kids"...but you never know, a seemingly "minor" incident could turn out to have some pretty long-lasting results, and unfortunately in some cases extreme results.

But by the same token: a seemingly "minor" effort to show kindness and compassion can also go a longer way than one might expect.
