Some people, scientist people, believe dreaming is a way for your sub-concious mind to deal with things or emotional events that happen when you're awake.
The mind makes dreams based upon what problems it needs to deal with.
According to this, I would think that braking free of the natural path or dream, is like robbing your mind of the tool it needs to stay healthy.
So in theory, doing it to much/robbing yourself of natural dreams, could harm your mind and be damaging to your mental health.
