I don't want Lucid Dreaming to be popular

For some reason, i feel like if something is very popular, i don't like it that much. If everyone was talking about Lucid Dreaming, it would get boring and not so awesome because it wouldn't be a rare thing. Am i mean or selfish to think this way?
I haven't seen Inception yet, but i'm going to watch it soon. I'm afraid that those millions of people who watch it will all search about the topic and in a year everyone will be talking about their recent WILD attempts on the street. :panic:
Do they actually say "lucid dream" in the movie? Do you think it will make people dive into the subject? I know it would probably be good for Dream Views, but still.. i want to keep Lucid Dreaming sort of an underground thing :evil::lol:

Just an opinion, but I would say that sounds a bit selfish. I mean, why wouldn't you want others to experience such an amazing thing? I understand that feeling though, about it becoming popular. In the same respect, you shouldn't be getting into lucid dreaming just because everyone else isn't, ya know? It takes time to master, so the ones truly passionate about it should be the only ones who really stick with it. Not saying I'm a professional or anything either though haha. If I had a preference though, I would say the only ones who should know about it are the ones who discover it for themselves, but in a way that's not fair. I think it's all going to come down to opinion on this subject, like most others. Good thought though, just my 2 cents.

I think lucid dreaming can be very difficult toget to grips with and time consuming , ect...... dream diarys, different techniques , being patient and practicing and meditation. After the inception phase has gone and people are'nt reaching lucidity im sure they will give up any way.

Honestly, I would want EVERYONE to learn to lucid dream and benefit positively from it. I would much rather have a bunch of esoteric types around than a bunch of externally focused minds. But I don't think you have too much to worry about given the amount of determination that lucid dreaming takes for most people. Everyone can be prodigal in it, but not everyone has the focus to do it.

This reminds me of the kids that try to keep a band hidden despite the fact that the only people they're hurting is the band that themselves. Just let other people enjoy good things.

People will join over the next couple weeks and a lot of them will say they googled the stuff from Inception, but they will probably try to LD for like 2 nights, fail, then leave and forget about lucid dreaming forever.

The more people we have lucid dreaming, the more we will learn from it. I'm all for it going mainstream; lots of money would also be invested into research and development.

Being underground has no benefits, unless you're the OP and fear conformity.

People who did not searched for it in first place - but it was brought to them by a movie or something else - will loose interest fast, will try for like a week or less, and give up becouse it's ''not working as they thought it would

Yeah, LD is rather complex, require lots of patience and thinking. Most people won't have the time and intelligence to learn it from a forum (really dreamviews is like the only popular source to learn it from). It is true that LD has became a bit more popular lately (lol I myself found out about it 2 days ago while lurking /r/) maybe get some hundreds more people into LD at most

It won't happen, but what you're expressing is nothing but a bit of egoism. Part of your attraction to lucid dreaming is how esoteric it is. You apparently want to be a apart of something "special" (maybe more than you appreciate the phenomenon itself? That is undetermined, though, as of yet). Whether lucid dreaming is underground or mainstream really should have no bearing on you. If you appreciate lucid dreaming for its merits, and not just because it's something "cool and underground", then you would (most likely) want others to experience it. If not, you would have to concede that a huge draw toward LDing, for you, is that it's underground - which kind of cheapens the whole experience, in your case. :-?

I really can't relate. I want to spread LDing love where ever I go! I want people to get the chance to experience this amazing phenomenon.

I think as others have said, many people will come here after seeing Inception and be disappointed that they can't achieve an LD in a short period of time, it's a bit like the Gym joining syndrome after the Christmas break, people join a Gym and try it for a month to lose weight but all they lose is money! It's a shame really because after your very first LD you want it even more! At least you get a feel for how awesome it can be.

I must admit though I like telling people about it whenever I can but it's hard putting it into words how amazing the feeling is.
The only way people will try lucid dreaming en masse is when some day the ability to record our lucidity is possible :cheeky: Imagine uploading your exploits to youtube lol, you'd get millions of hits!

It would be pretty sweet to be able to record LDs of shooting energy beams, flying and whatnot; but it wouldn't convey that amazing feeling of being conscious and inside it.

About the OP, on one hand I would love for everyone to learn how to LD because it is just so fun and awsome, but on the other I think it being little known to the masses makes it even more rewarding once you finally get it! :D

Yes i agree. I'm not saying that i want to be the only person in the world who can LD, just that i don't want everyone to talk about this, because i want it to be my secret kinda.. and i only want to talk about it to the people who i know would be interested and i trust.

It's that i don't want to be just part of the crowd. I like it when I have or know something that others don't.

Have you guys ever liked a song before it got popular, but you've heard it so many times after that you got bored? Or you never liked the song in the first place but after some years, you listen to it again, and it sounds good, because you don't hear it every day. I don't want Lucid Dreaming to be the next way to "get high" or hallucinate. While i know it is hard to achieve (talking from experience of course), I'm still not happy about the whole Inception thing. But what do I know? I haven't seen it yet. I might come back from the cinema and say everyone should watch it.

There are alot of different ways to take this.

We probably will get alot of influx from the movie. That's just bound to happen, but i totally agree with a few others here that alot of those people will try LDing out for size and realize how hard it is and then go back to their busy lives. I will say, however, that I will try to help out as many of them as I can !

The worst thing that can happen is that the movie will inspire alot of misconceptions about dreaming. In fact, i'm pretty sure it already has. So alot of what we will be busy with here is trying to correct those. We may not be a shadowy organization (as much as that would be cool) but we are important in that we can help make sure that people have access to a truthful idea of dreaming and the potentialities of lucid dreaming.

I actually fully understand the idea of wanting to keep lucid dreaming within a small circle. One of the draws for me is that it is a science in the process of being studied, and I am helping to study it. Maybe one day people around the world will be lucid dreaming every night, and I can say that I was one of the first. As great as it is, I don't think it should be an evangelical thing. I quite honestly enjoy telling my friends that I can spin dreams, and laughing at their looks of astonishment. I think it's something that we can share with those close to us, but sharing with the world would take a bit of the magic and mystery out of being an oneironaut.

Sorry if it sounds selfish, but that's just my mindset.

I agree and disagree. On one hand I totally understand what you mean by kind of wanting it to be an underground thing. Not many people are willing to commit the effort it takes to learn to LD, and a lot of new people kind of take it as a novelty thing. But, I personally think that it would be great if more people became interested and actually took it serious. Like I think the big influx of people would be good but, oh god, if I see one more question about totems or dream levels... The worst thing is, is totems aren't even supposed to make you lucid (and won't), and dream levels are pure Hollywood.

So basically I think lucid dreaming is a great thing and the more people the better, but I miss the days before the forum was swarmed by Inception fans. (I lurked a little for over a year before I joined)

I think everyone should learn how to lucid dream when they are kids. Like, a subject in school. There is just so much goddamn potential...but alas...instead we must learn a shit ton of other useless stupid crap that we just end up forgetting within a few months.

So are you saying that you only like lucid dreaming because it isn't popular... You should lucid dream because it is fun and you can do anything you want in it. I tried to advertise it by writing in sharpie "Google: Lucid Dreaming" in the bathroom stall. The god dam janitors kept cleaning it off though... I wrote it more then once but eventually I gave up.

lol when the janitors actually do clean the bathroom stalls, it gets rid of an LD ad. try scratching it into the stall, like with something sharp, see how they like that!

Hi guys, I'm kind of new to the forums, but I've been lurking. I think that lucid dreaming should be put as an optional class, because not everybody might like dreaming so much. Now about inception, yeah, many fans are gonna show up here, but most of them will give up after trying it for a bit. And Xegar, I totally get you on wanting it to be underground, because it doesn't feel that special later on, but in reality many people would benefit from this.

There are people who only listen to how a thing is said, and not what is said. For example, take scripture, pro or con, it clearly states that it is sealed to man's understanding, yet people do not react to the content, to the intentions, but only to what is popular about it.

Or take the Yoga Sutras, originally written by a non-religious Sanskrit Scholar, and translated beyond the recognition of its content.

Or even audio-books, it is not what is said, but the fact that it is read by a person, or by a machine language font system.

A real quest for understanding learns to disregard whether or not a thing is said by a rock, satan himself, or whether it is popular or not. He simply seeks understanding and truth of the matter. There will always be fools who follow the Pied Piper, and simply a few who hear the music of clear reality.

I quite agree. However, along with it, I would state that language is the key to self-realization.

One of the main reasons I put my lucid dream research on hold. I was learning to understand and communicate. Now this put before me an important question. Man did not know the fundamentals of the languages he did use. The language of the lucid dream is much, much more difficult. So, if I were in fact learning the harder, then it had to be possible to understand and write the principles of the less, something man has been unable to do. So, either I was blowing smoke up my ass, or I had a very important task to perform.

I don't think so.. I mean, it may get people's attention.. some might research.. some might try.. but you know how it is with these things, people will "try" and if they don't get immediate results, just toss it aside... :D I think we're safe hehe

Yeah I don't Lucid dreaming will become extremely mainstream.... actually not even mainstream. for the most part I only expect to find people really devoted to discovering info about their dreams will join our community. sometimes lucid dreaming will get the spotlight in the media and attract attention, but most of those immediate followers will lose interest. You will never have lucid dreaming reach a point to where you can discuss your lucid dreams/methods to anyone daily and have it all be understood.

I think that all of you guys are overestimating the average movie goer. In my opinion the only reason we are so interested in the lucid dreaming aspect of the movie is because we already know about it. The normal person that watches this movie will just see pretty women, lots of cool special effects, and good acting. The only people that will actually look into real aspects of the movie such as lucid dreaming, will be people that I personally would love to join our community.

No, don't exaggerate my words ;P If that was the only reason, i wouldn't have gotten so excited on the first few ones that they ended in some seconds or i wouldn't be able to get lucid in the first place. There would be no motivation.

Actually here's egocentrism version 2... im pretty sure LDing is something special...... but my vote would be yeah sure... i would prefer lding to stay in the darkest corners of the world. if it was mainstream it would lose its touch that all of us are experiencing now... I.E what would happen if DV flooded? exactly.....

You could say Im being egocentric but I dont want to LDing to be mainstream, My argument is..... if you even cared.. 1 you would search and find out about lding.... 2 if you dont.. well you live and died without knowing.. no harm done. Even if someone does LD and others don't know about it, I still can't say you're special. You have to be truly dedicated to LDing to be "special".

I agree with you; if you're a part of the beginning of something large, once it does become large it can feel like you're lost in the crowd. That's all I really have to say on the topic.

I honestly would like to see more research and development put into lucid dreaming. No money in that unless it can sell.

Well it's not for everyone. Even if everyone was aware of lucid dreaming, only a portion would be motivated enough to take the time and effort. I think you got your wish.

I share the original poster's opinion. I didn't work hard to obtain this. I didn't work at all. Gift of God or mother Nature. Irrelevant. I have something very few people have. And I don't want everyone to have it. That would make me ordinary, dull, insignificant. However, with this I distinguish myself and see myself head and shoulders above the crowd. I have a gift. A toy which everyone would want if they knew I had it. So I stay quiet about it.
I'd imagine that if I worked hard to get it I'd be even more insulted if everyone went "whoa dewd you oughta see what I dreamed of last night it was sooooo rad" and "sup gurl I totally dreamed of you last night and we had FUUUUN". Yeah, I'd be f****** disgusted.

I know what you're talking about, but, it would be so amazing to talk to everyone about my chain of five false awakenings (happened a week ago), or first lucid dream, or WILD/DEILD/WBTB/etc, attempt and them not ask "What on earth is that?"

I do somewhat feel this way, I kind of want it to be small because it adds a uniqueness feel to it. But at the same time I want more people to know about it because I love to talk to people I know about it.

Most people i know seem to think its weird and freakish.

I don't see anything wrong with it becoming mainstream, I actually like the idea, would do so much good for people, especially for kids, since it seems to be easier to learn the skill at young age.

I see where he is coming from with this. The actual experience of LDs is so amazing that I would like others to be able to do it. but the fact that not many can gives you a sense of accomplishement after you learn it.

Oh but I enjoy when I find a person who does know about it and is interested in it. Its fun to have someone to talk to about OBEs and LDs and other stuff like that.

Honestly and truly, I am right there with you. The only difference is I work to 'spread the message.' Partly because I really do want them to experience this amazing phenomenon, partly so I have yet another person to speak with about it, but mostly because I know, even if they do manage to obtain some proficiency, I'll still be better at it and more knowledgeable than they are. So even if, eventually, I'm met with the misfortune of overhearing those kinds of conversations, despite my abhorrence, I'll smile smugly, knowingly.

I remember a chain of false awakenings. I was being tested at the time. It took me a long time to undrestand it.

I was tested on what has been called the trinity, but the trinity is a metaphor. Perception, conception and will. It was while I was in college.

I had the same thought, and in a way I still feel the same...I am surprised that so many people don't know or don't want to know about lucid dreaming, but I can't blame them, I mean I am not all that interesed in recent developments in engineering, though many people find that interesting.
Some times it gets lonely,since this is the only place I can discuss matters like this.

I am guessing it is because you still think of LD as something sacred in a way,something personal perhaps? That is good, because this, well in my case, is one of the main ressons I find lucid dreaming so fascinating.

Since the Inception cat's already out of the bag in this thread, let me share my catalyst for coming to this board.

I had heard of lucid dreaming before. I had done some completely unstructured practice on my own (in the terminology people have adopted here, I got a good grasp on one of my dream signs and shoved around a couple things for self preservation), but never got heavily into it. I'd talked with some people about trying to share a dream, but no one was open to the idea and I didn't know how the hell to try it anyway.

When inception came out, it gave me a reason to discuss lucid dreaming with people again. Leo specifically talks in some of his interviews about how he got into lucid dreaming while filming Inception and how he used it to manage the nightmares he's dealt with most of his life. I don't think any of the stuff in Inception generally applies to lucid dreaming, although I have included a physical object in my RCs, and I'm trying not to ask any useless fangirl questions.

Ultimately, what you experience in your lucid dreams is always going to be very unique and special to you, and the idea that someone else learning to take more control of their dreams somehow takes away from the enjoyment you get out of yours is as absurd as Adam and Steve's wedding somehow ruining your traditional marriage. Not wanting a bunch of clueless, transient fangirls mucking up your forum is one thing; not wanting anyone else to know your super secret handshake just makes you sound like a whiny hipster.

I thought i would have the most epic LD in my life, but no :S

God, some of you people are pretentious.

And I'm sure people were LDing before YOU thought it was cool, as well.

I used to feel like lucid dreaming should be something kept for myself like some others have mentioned. I have no idea why now, but working so hard at it just made it...mine. I can only liken it to the idea of working really hard and making a lot of money and you have that one thought that you don't want so-and-so to get a better position than you, or make more than you do. You just feel like you deserve it more for a brief instant before you think about how terrible that is. Like others have said, it takes so much dedication to get to the level that most people will drop it quickly anyway. But the people that stick with it deserve it just as much.

If it's not obvious yet, I don't think like that anymore and I tell everyone who will bother to listen to me about it. Just the other day my brother was so excited about a really vivid dream and a false awakening he had, and he remembered to write it all down like I told him. I just love to see people realize that there's much more to sleep than just dreading waking up for work the next day.


tl;dr: If everyone started taking up lucid dreaming, that would be pretty awesome.

Of course lucid dreaming should become popular!

If you want to be "above the crowd", do it by bringing yourself up not pushing others down. Anyway, lucid dreaming is not a gift, anyone CAN do it, most just dont know about it. I suppose you'd prefer kids not learn to read in school so you can feel special?

If lucid dreaming were as simple as a formula, then I would agree that keeping it secret is pointless and selfish. But it isn't. Lucid dreaming is an extremely introverted, reflective activity. It's not coincidence that most people here are of similar character builds - we all sought out lucid dreaming, for one reason or another. Having lucid dreaming shoved down the public's throat in movies and media just for a quick novelty fix would certainly be vexing. For one, after the whole public hype ("Wow, yeah, you can do this thing with your dreams!") fades, LDing would be seen and mocked as if it were a fad.

As a general rule, the majority of the public only become informed through powerful, money-motivated endeavours; be it the media, entertainment industry (same thing these days) or something governmental. Money corrupts. Soon you'd have technology providing a quick-fix (which we already have, and the morals of that are debatable). Personally I'd prefer not to see an entire industry made off of LDing.

I sort of agree i dont want it to become popular because I enjoy being unique and no thats not the only reaosn i LD but it will just seem not that great when everyone is just talking about it it would be fun to like brag to people about my Lucid dreams but have them understand thats why i told my friends about it but ya

It would be great to talk to somebody about it, i agree. I only know one person who says he can do it since he was little but i don't know if i should believe him, i think he just doesn't want to admit he doesn't have something under control. Anyway, i like to talk about Lucid Dreaming, but i don't want 80% of the people to know what it is. BS would spread much easier.

I think people are going to try it since they've seen inception and then think it sux when they have done like 3 RC and haven't got a lucid and then we'll be back to normal again, maybe a little bit more members since some will succed and the population is growing. you get the point.

I completely agree, there is no use trying to use the fact that you lucid dream, to gain a sense of authority... If people actually watched Inception they would realise that Inception NEVER mentions Lucid dreaming and only correctly portrays dreaming as something both mysterious and amazing... The technique they use for extraction is not actually shown and nothing is explicitly explained...

This I also agree with, it is no coincidence that the people that reside in these Lucid dreaming forums are surprisingly similar to each other.. More often than not; I find a User's profile on this website that perfectly describes why most of us are here on this forum today: "I want to reach further into the rabbit hole"... This remarkable resemblance in character is what causes most people to arrive at: Lucid Dreaming...

This is probably a good time to mention that my response to the topic this thread is derived from is in the paragraph directly above...

But even after all this, we are left with people here simply because they were eluded by large media conglomerates that dreaming is something that you can quickly indulge in.. while in simple actuality it takes much time to reach a stage of Lucid dreaming that allows people to "create" they're own dream world.. I have nothing against these people... But I prefer to also use the short amount of time I have in my mind, to reach new goals and finally understand more about what it is truly capable of...

Unfortunately, even after all this.. I'm left here having to remind the people on this thread that; I didn't explore Lucid dreaming due to Inception... This is because I'm afraid of the stereotypical image this has begun to hold...

I on the other hand have the same amount of respect for the people who found Lucid dreaming through Inception, and for the people who were first knowledgeable of the subject through other means...

P.S. In my opinion; any person that found out about Lucid Dreaming through a movie, that I believe, ONLY mentions dreaming.. is just as curious as I am about the subject of the mind... And so just as equally deserves to delve in Lucid Dreaming...

The only thing I have ever seen about lucid dreaming (and they never even mentioned the term) was on spongebob where spongebob went into a bunch of peoples dreams and made them become lucid so that they would be able to do whatever they want. but then he messed up there dreams somehow.

Waking Life is about lucid dreams. It's more of a philosophical movie though. But the way it's made looks awesome. I think i had my first lucid thanks to it.

Ive heard about that waking life movie. Someone mentioned it in a thread about lucid dreaming on another forum that actually has nothing to do with lucid dreaming.

If you ask me, even if they do see the movie. They might not care about lucid dreaming still, take my brother for example. He doesn't give 2 shits about lucid dreaming. I found out what lucid dreaming was from accidentally coming across a definition in Wikipedia. My friends think it is a joke, but I think its really cool.

I dont understand why people dont care about lucid dreaming though. What isnt attractive about going to sleep and getting to act out all of your fantasies?

I don't think it will happen; I saw Inception over a month ago, and just found out about lucid dreaming two nights ago. And also, I don't remember them ever saying "lucid dreaming" anywhere in the movie.

I second this. Can you imagine dreamviews right now if inception mentioned lucid dreaming? And then if they told the audience that they could do it too? It would be inception fan mayhem! There would be no end to the totem and shared dreaming questions..

If everyone's doing it then I won't feel like as much of an individual. This is a common thing for me. Dream sharing has become a popular topic in this forum. What if criminals decide to take it to a different level. Some of us may not take so well to having our minds invaded. I can imagine people committing suicide because of 'dream bullying'...and people being manipulated into doing things they never thought they'd do. People can go INSANE because someone got into their head and fricken messed them up.

...And what would we do if dream invasion became a common thing? There's no such thing as dream police. Can you even arrest someone for hurting you in your dream? How can you prove they did it?

What if we get some nutcases that start confusing dreaming with reality? They might kill themselves!

Except dream sharing is a complete myth without any evidence ever collected in a scientific trial.

I don't think a movie would create such long term enthusiasm throughout people even if it was called lucid dreaming.. altho a lot of people would think it is cool, most people are more interested in making money or the waking world to even take a second look and put their time an energy into practicing it.

It shouldn't take anything away from your lucid dreams themselfs, maybe the social side of lucid dreaming mainstream would get irritating but why let society govern your personal feelings and decisions and turn it into boring just because now everyone else is doing it?

Exactly, I'm happy it's only 1% percent that try it out... I wouldn't want idiots who are just looking for a quick fix to get away from there lives.. (Although, I have nothing against escapism)

I learned by myself before ever hearing about lucid dreaming (though even when I was little and even more so now it was rare for me to have them) but after using them for a while I eventually got to where I used them as an escape from all of reality instead of just an escape from gravity. If I am fighting with someone in real life I may still be close friends with them in the dreamworld

I emphasize the part: "quick fix"..

The people that are eluded by videos/movies and the ones that think that LDs, can be induced in an instant are the ones that would bug me... If people arrived at this forum, and after ONE day, were already posting that there fed up because they've had no LD yet... That would be quite annoying..

Normally a person, would of surfed the forum for at least a couple of days and understood some of the concepts in LDing before posting questions... (The people I mentioned probably wouldn't do that)

P.S. I think I've posted this twice, but: I like the fact that the people here are similar to each other because they have similar goals...

I want everyone in the whole world to lucid dream. We would have a better global society if everyone were lucid dreamers.

I'll just pipe in and say that this here Noob got here primarily because of the movie Inception. I actually had visited (according to my browser's history) once before, I think when I was talking to a friend in the Seattle area about it a couple years ago (Nate True, creator of Tap Tap Revolution). But it was the movie that got me surfing till late in the night, and this community and your stories catalyzed my interest enough to start reading two great books about it and to start practicing. Last night was my first, woohoo! (put it in the dream journal). I get the concern of being flooded here, or LD being cheapened, but it sure would be inspiring for people to have LDs and to start experimenting/learning more about consciousness in general. one should defines one self-worth internally, not externally.

i am fairly new here but have been into LD for a while, and i do grow agitated at questions without any research, but i think the potential benefits far outweighs the annoyances. new LDers will come and go, most of them quickly. but there will be a few that it will stick with and better their lives.

I can see where you're coming from but I don't like the idea that most people are idiots. Call me naive, but I like to think that under all that fear of being a reject, the average person can think for themselves too. And potential is good enough for me :)

Well what I wouldn't want is people thinking lucid dreaming is some kind of devil worship, or something that is "dangerous". You know, people who think they know what they are talking about when they just heard about lucid dreaming. Some of the things people on here say about their peers opinion on lucid dreaming is ridiculous. Especially when they are just hearing about it.

I'm not sure how I would feel about it being all mainstreamed though.

this is the book that got me back into it after almost 15 years.

Im here t school and decided to log onto dreamviews I wish I could find the one person in this school that I know has actually tried lucid dreaming. I want to talk to him and also tell him about dreamviews. I know that he is generally interested in it except for being one of those idiots who think its not possible

The only thing that would be interesting would be that through lucid dreaming popularity would be born new, interesting technology. If we can go to space, im sure the only thing keeping us from more LD tech is lack of interest.

I want a machine like the lifelight machines from veelox in the pendragon series. The machines basically put you into a lucid dream where you can act out your fantasies. But they are viewed by other people on a computer screen so that might ruin some of the fun.
