False Lucid Dreams?

I keep having these dreams that I think are lucid dreams while I'm dreaming, but as soon as I wake up I realize they're not. In the dreams, I'm usually running around summoning things and changing things, typical lucid dream stuff.

I've only been lucid once, but I still know that very distinct feeling you get when you're lucid. That hasn't been present in any of my recent "lucid" dreams. I do everything that people would normally do, I just don't remember thinking about it or wanting to do it personally. It just rolls along like a regular dream. In fact, I don't even remember how I got "lucid."

Anyway, what's the deal with these dreams about being lucid? I've had like three in the past week and it's kinda pissing me off.

I have them too. They're normal. I doubt anybodies dream count is accurate because of this.

I think i might of had one of these recently. I even stabilized it...

I guess people who are into lucid dreaming have them because it's constantly on their mind?

Yeah, that happens to me sometimes too; it's pretty annoying. At least it's easy to tell which ones are true lucids, because you get that overwhelming blast of awareness and realization.

I actually had a false lucid dream before a true lucid dream, so when I eventually had a true lucid it was an entirely different feeling. Very eye opening.

Lucidity is just means awareness, so there is not really such a thing as a false lucid dream. If you are aware you are dreaming, you are lucid. However, there are different levels of lucidity.

Think about your present waking life awareness. Are you aware of your physical pain? Body position? Urges? Thoughts? Emotions? Sounds? Smells?

You can be aware of just a few of these things, or all of them.

Lucidity is just means awareness, so there is not really such a thing as a false lucid dream. If you are aware you are dreaming, you are lucid. However, there are different levels of lucidity.

You really don't know what you are talking about, you never experienced a False Lucid Dream.

Last night, I had a dream that I was doing my reality checks! So yes I think aspiring lucid dreamers just have it on their mind a lot.

I've had these dreams, very annoying >.< Like, when in your dream you realize your dreaming, you go around "controlling" your dream, but you really have no control, and your perspective doesnt change

I can't imagine what you mean... Control without control?

Dream Control and Lucidity are two different skills.

We could say that they are dreams with a LOT LOT of control, like a lucid dream, because you also say "hey I'm dreaming" and all of that, but in fact, you are no lucid at all

It wasn't lucid per say, I dreamt I was aware, but i wasn't, I simply said in my dream that i was dreaming, but it really didn't have any effect, it was like it was all part of the plot of my dream. My thought process didn't clear, i didn't feel that rush of awareness, I was watching my dream self become aware, like a movie, but it didn't effect me

That's still lucidity. Because you said you were dreaming, unless you said it, and didn't become aware, like if you didn't believe yourself. Is that what happened?

Yes, when i said it, i didn't become aware, but my dream self started controlling the dream without me actually being aware or in control

I don't know why this is such a controversial subject on DV. -_- It always ends up with people raging that there's no such thing and that there's only levels of awareness, then the topic gets closed. Pretty unfair, IMO. So hear me out.

I actually think that there is such a thing as false lucidity, even if people claim the term is "confusing." For example, I've had a dream that I was someone else, a superhero or something, and I was with another person. We went to sleep in the dream in an attempt to accomplish something. We were "lucid" in that "dream inside a dream," as you could call it. But I had no freaking idea that I was ME, asleep in my bed. And the "rules" that governed this "false lucidity" were nothing like a LD where I was completely aware. I know lucidity does not inherintly mean dream control, but it was more like I thought I was almost remotely controlling a different body. The "dream inside a dream" felt like I was dreaming of having something that I was thinking of as a "lucid dream," but I wasn't thinking of what lucid dreaming actually was. Therefore the dream played out more as a dream than a lucid dream. I know it's confusing.

And I know someone COULD label that as "being lucid with an extremely low level of awareness," but again, I dreamed of going to sleep with someone and waking up in a lucid dream. My idea of a lucid dream wasn't clear because my sense of logic was so low, and therefore it held little resemblance to a real lucid dream.

Yeah you "know you're asleep," but you don't know that it's YOU who's asleep in YOUR bed, and your idea of sleep is changed because of the low sense of logic of a normal dream.

I know Naiya says there's no such thing, no need to quote her. But having such strong negative reactions to the idea is ridiculous. Even if it's a "confusing term," that doesn't mean it's not worth discussing. It's the best way to describe certain near-lucid experiences IMO, so no need to shut the idea out.

RogerWaters said it best, it's like becoming "lucid" is part of the plot of your non-lucid dream.

So, you were unaware of your physical body, you had no idea who your waking self is, but you were aware of the dream state?

If you dreamed about being lucid, you had a dream. A normal, non-lucid, dream. And yes, for some, it does lead to confusion because they start to think that what LDs they've had weren't real. It's not the topic that needs to be squashed; it's the term. It's misleading.

I think I also have the same problem.
Last night I had a sleep paralysis, and then suddenly I was in a middle of jungle.
I know that I was dreaming, but I have no awareness, it's just like watching a movie from third person perspective.

Yeah, something like that.
Sometimes I even did reality check or trying to change the dream scene, but it all happened without awareness, I can only watch my self doing it.

A lucid dream is a dream in where you know you are dreaming.

A False Lucid Dream is just a dream, in where the plot is about you "knowing" you are dreaming.
now listen, you DON'T KNOW you are dreaming, you just act like so being driven by the dream, is that simple.

I have this thing EVERY TIME. it's very annoying. "You" know it's a dream, but you do things that you would never do in a LD. And there's things that happen where you would go "WHAT?" but you don't do anything.

Fixed.

Mariano is right about one thing; if you knew you where dreaming, then you were Lucid. Even if you were on autopilot, from what I can tell from your posts, you did have a Lucid Dream.

Not exactly. It's like a normal dream, you always have a vague sense of your normal life, even if the dream events are nothing like your normal life. Can't you think of a dream where the events are nothing like your real life? You go about doing events that make no sense in comparison to your waking life, seeing things that make no sense, but you usually know in the back of your mind that it's you, you just can't normally piece together the logic that what you're doing is strange because you're dreaming.


I wasn't really observing the events that I was doing from the outside, it was me doing it, I was in control. But my sense of logic was so low (like in a normal dream) that I couldn't piece together why my actions, and even my identity, seemed out-of-the-ordinary.

Since I was in a low-logic dream, my idea of dreaming was also low-logic. So when I was dreaming in that dream, the dream inside the dream involved me talking to people like the really existed, and generally not having a great idea of what lucid dreaming is.

Therefore my "lucid" just seemed fake, because of my low sense of logic.

I had no idea that I had gone to sleep in my room a few hours prior and was dreaming.

but remember, knowing you are dreaming brings an unmistakable awareness of the fact, so you can easily tell if it was lucid or not.

You can tell from your experiences if you were lucid or not, in fact, the one who can judge what happened is you, don't let anybody change the way you think.

I believe that I've had these types of dreams before, including last night and 2 nights ago. If these are the 'lucid' dreams I've been having, then I've never been properly lucid before.

Just for clarity, could you describe you dreams? Maybe we can help determine if they were lucid or not. :)

heh OK I'll try. They were kind of hard to remember upon wakening.

Last night:
Well, I don't remember how I became lucid, but I was walking around and was able to earthbend (Avatar The Last Airbender). I didn't really do much in the dream, but I also remember performing the nose RC just to see what it felt like, and I felt myself breathe through my nose even though I was pinching it. It was a weird feeling. Then I was paying attention to my breathing and wondering whether I was breathing the same way in my bed. Because normally when I breath in through my nose and out through my mouth I need to close my mouth to breathe in, then open it to breathe out. Or do something weird with my throat...(Hard to describe).

2 Nights ago:
I realised I was dreaming by looking at my hand, which had a weird extra finger which was incredibly short. I was in my room(?) and ran out into the hallway and span around, asking to see my dream guide. Then some girl in a tight yellow suit appears (:D) and so do some other people, the girl and I fight the other people, and that's all I remember.

In these 'lucid' dreams I didn't get any feeling of vividness and awareness... So I'm not really sure. I know I need to work on my recall, but I can never remember full dreams, just fragments of some.

I'm guessing, too, that these can be lower-level degrees of lucidity - I had one of these the other night and it really upset me. I have had real LDs before and I know that blast of reality and awareness that everybody mentions - it totally wasn't present in this dream; furthermore, this dream was more like a vague memory, like any old dream. I was definitely dreaming about lucid dreaming. But, since I was aware that I was dreaming, and since I did exert control (or think I did), I must have been lucid to some degree. I even remembered to spin around (or at least I dreamed that I remembered, LOL). Lucidity has varying levels, and these are probably on the lower end, but they are a step in the right direction at least.

Wow, I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one.

I've had approximately like 6 False Lucids without a real lucid yet.


In these dreams I always say like "I am dreaming", even tell it to other persons, and do things lucid-related like trying to fly, trying to summon someone, use The Force, etc.
All that but without consciousness, they are just like normal dreams.


I hope someday I will have a real LD, because these False ones are making me feel sad.

@ Those persons that say there is no such thing as False LD's, or many that say that if you say "I am dreaming" in a dream it's automatically a LD, are wrong. That's my opinion, maybe I'm the one wrong.


These FLD (False LD) are like memories, just like normal dreams.. And people say that Lucid Dreaming feels just like the real world..... I have had 0 LDs, so can someone answer to me if you can compare LDs to like ...for example Virtual Reality?

To clarify--the ONLY requirement for a lucid dream is knowing you're dreaming. If you blindly follow the dream plot, or you don't think very clearly, or you don't have control, or you dream in the third person (as in watching it like a movie), this doesn't mean that you had some sort of "false" lucid--you just had a low quality lucid dream. Your clarity of thought and control will get better with practice.

Please stop perpetuating this misinformation.

I'm with you on this. I have "Very low quality lucid dreams" as well, where I dream that I'm reality checking, flying, jumping, messing with girls, etc. I can't wait till I get an extremely vivid and conscious one that I can remember distinctly like it actually just happened...

Reading through this thread, I'm starting to think "False Lucids" and "Low-level lucids" are just different ways of labeling the same thing. Both are dreams where you have the idea that you're dreaming without the full awareness and logic of waking life. Both are something we all want to move past to full-blown, vivid lucids.

Or am I missing something?
