They wanted to be different would be my guess. Words and their meanings do change over time though.

My dreams are colored. I couldn't dream without color. I would do the coffee thing for as long as I could. Color is what gives life that extra beauty and I take that for advantage.

As for the wording I use both spellings depending on the situation. I believe that if you can understand what someone is saying and they spell a word without a mistake that no one would intentionally make is good enough. That is why I accept it when people say gooder and brung. I even say funner which supposedly should be more fun. When I talk to my English teacher sometimes I say gooder just to annoy her. She tells me it isn't good grammar. I say grammar is defined by opinions. I would never write funner on a paper though. That would be bad.

It is very possible that we do dream in black and white all the time but we believe we should be seeing colors, so we see them. Really we are not seeing anything in our dreams anyway because it is all in our subconscious. Anyway... blah

I experience color in my dreams but I have also experienced black and white dreams. :roll:

Actually, Australia was the destination for all of the official criminal 'transportations' as they used to call them. Yes, there was initially a great deal of emigration to America from Britain -- first the Royalists moved there to avoid the persecutions of the Puratan Protestant Thugs under Cromwell, and then the Puratans had to run because they didn't have what it took to hang onto power. Later, in America these two sides would go at it again in the American Civil War. But in America the Aristocracy would continue to be as it had always been, that is, Dutch. And then immigration from other sources would come to outnumber the English. It is these other elements, I suspect, who would be indifferent to the spelling of the word colour.

2- Leo, just curious, are you trying to prove to us (strangers in a forum) that you're smarter than us? Because I don't know about what everyone else thinks, but you're just annoying me. I mean sure, it sounds like you already have a college education (in which case, you're probably an unemployed middle-aged guy who has nothing better to do than sit at your computer, reply to every other message in this forum, and correct as much grammar and spelling as possible), but you don't have to boast it by making things sound as complicated as possible, trying to intimidate and embarass everybody else!!!

I didn't type this in an angry mood, just slightly annoyed (and very tired!).

I'm inclined to agree with the past two posts, though not as much with the jumping to conclusions that Leo's middle-aged or has a college degree.

Also, I may occasionally refer to "Leo" as "Adolf" from now on. (see page 1)

I mean, I've been criticized by others for trying to sound too smart (although I don't usually try to sound smart), but, Leo, you're approaching borderline "jerk" by my standards.


Anyway, the difference in spelling of "color" arose back when Webster was making his dictionary. Basically, we had no reason to keep the 'u' in "color," since it's not pronounced. Similarly, we revamped things like "shoppe" to "shop," based upon which letters were actually used.


Furthermore, I have always dreamt in color, as nearly as I can remember. I would think that a grayscale dream would actually stand out to me, since it would be so unusual. Then again, most of my dreams occur in daylight, twilight, or in rooms with some sort of lighting, so it makes sense that they would be in color, since that's how I'd see an area with that sort of lighting, anyway.

While this very well may be true, it also may be false. Just because many individuals have recalled grayscale dreams does not mean that everyone has some grayscale dreams. Perhaps there exist humans who have no such dreams, yet still have dreams. Then, by definition, those individuals have all of their dreams in color.
I'm not saying that this has to be the case, but it seems rather odd to jump to the conclusion that everyone has at least some grayscale dreams. Saying that it must be true because the question has been brought up a lot is like saying that dragons must exist because dragon tales have occurred in every culture. While either statement may be true, the corresponding argument is a fallacy.

Ok, guys. I have a feeling that this goes beyond how a word is spelled… I can understand where the aggravation is coming from, but I’m not going to play judge here. That isn’t my place. However, there’s no reason this should have become a battle. Who gives a damn how a word is spelled or if someone has imperfect grammar? Guess what? We’re human. And not all of us claim English as a native language. Guess what else? We’re not perfect. This isn’t the place to degrade to schoolyard name-calling. But if you’d really like to continue (and some folks do enjoy a drop-and-drag fight) please do it through PMs.

To get back on topic(who cares about the correct spelling, no use in arguing):

I usually LD in color, most people do because your dreams in REM sleep (most LDs) are in color. Black and white dreams occur in deeper stages of sleep when the brain is less active and disables colors and other vivid things. But recall and LDing is easier in REM stages so we tend to have color (lucid) dreams. :)

Um, yeah, so we're arguing in really long paragraphs about the spelling of color/colour why? :? Talk about derailing a topic into a forest then raping it before it can do any good.

I don't know if I dream in colour because I keep forgetting my dreams. I do vaugely remember the colours in dreams though, but that could just be my mind "filling in the blanks".

I can't remember me dreaming in black-white and i am pretty sure that i dream in color, when i think I can remember color of skin, red ,blue and other colors

I dream in both colour and black and white, i dont see what the big deal is with dreaming in black and white, a dream has colour beyond its surface features.

I would love to dream in Technicolor someday. ("Technicolor dreams") LOL

Somtimes when i dream in colour, somthing stands out, like a women in a red dress...that for me is an indication of a "colour" dream.

Black and White dreams are more abstract, like with the lighting and atomosphere (i guess thats with watching alot of Film Noirs).

I think Kaniaz already alluded to this, but dreams are "made" in black and whtie, but are added from memory. If you have no memory of color (or of a specific color) you won't dream in the color you don't see. That's why blind people don't see color in dreams.

I have had dreams in total black and white. Most have consisted of color/colour.
When I have become lucid, if I focus on color they become more vivid than you can imagine in your waking life. :)

It is true that blind people cannot dream in color. But those are people that have been blind from birth.
Everything we dream is just our own interpretation. A blind person has no referance point. You cannot describe a color. You could describe an apple, yet the blind person's percertion would most likely still be obscured from our apple and how we see it.

Naw, that sounds like some serious bullshit. Let me explain (from what I know).

Black and white pictures are made from extracting all of the color values from a picture, it is left with just the light in the picture. Now, your eyes have two things that see. Cones and rods. One of them (I think rods) picks up light. Therefore, you subconciously see only the black and white, then the cones (I believe) give the color.
