Knowing your dreaming but not going lucid??

Hi, I have been watching and reading on this site for about 4 weeks now and decided to join up :) Lately i have been having dreams where i know i'm dreaming but i dont become lucid, can anyone tell me why??

e.g : I say in my dream "it wont matter if i flood the house because if i dont make a big deal of it they will just think it's part of my dream"

My ability to lucid dream of late has gone a bit dry but i get SP alot and that always throws me into a lucid dream, i just cant understand why a dream like this wouldnt make me realise i'm dreaming because in a way i have realised, sorry sounds crazy lol, any help would be good, thankies :)

Yeah, I've had quite a few dreams where I have a thought to do with dreaming or I actually remember past dreams as though they were RL and never quite "click" and become lucid.
Just last night I dreamed I was skydiving and I thought "this is really amazing and all but it's just like flying in a dream except that flying is easier" lol

LOL. that made me laugh..i could have really kicked myself for it, twice in 2 dreams last night i didnt realise, yet it was there infront of me. My dreams for the past few weeks have been non lucid apart from SP throwing me into one..do you think i might be on the verge of going lucid within a dream again as im now having "in your face irony" in a dream, but without SP having to do it?

Try to have stronger intentions of getting Lucid. Set up a task and strive towards achieving it. These dreams happen btw. Either you're not really Lucid, or have a very low level of Lucidity in which you can't make your own choices really.

Hiya, with 16 lucid dreams on ur LD Count it might be helpful to know when you did those and what techniques have worked in the past to become lucid. Have you ever gotten lucid with a DILD before?

Well it seems u be semi lucid. You are only vaguely aware of the fact you are dreaming. You have a vague awareness of the true reality of the situation you find yourself in. So perhaps the dream isn't very solid of vivid. The experience is only a fuzzy one which you do not have a clear state of consciousness in which you fully realize the reality of your situation. Yet you still know somewhat. This happens. Reality checks always make me fully realize. Sometimes I'll be in a dream going with some weird storyline knowing I'm in a dream, but not thinking about it much. I do an rc and go wait wtf? I'm dreaming!! Why I am I doing this shit!!! So maybe you have to remember to rc. Then you will make the dream more vivid by being more focused and aware bringing more detail into the dream, making it real. Or it could destabilize it and make you wake up.

I know what you're experiencing, and it's really frustrating! I've had dreams where I've vocally said that I'm dreaming, but it doesn't register and I don't understand it or think about it. The worst one was a dream in which I was watching TV and suddenly, the bottom part of the screen started flashing, in all caps, "LUCIDITY!!!" Of course, I didn't become lucid. *facepalm*

Lucidity is when you know that you're dreaming. It sounds like you had at least some knowledge that you were dreaming, since your actions showed that you knew there wouldn't be any consequences. You didn't have complete understanding, though, and you weren't able to fully benefit from the lucid because you weren't entirely aware. I'd recommend either doing more RCs during the day so that you would do an RC in a situation like that and realize it's a dream, or do ADA so that you would inspect your dream and fully realize that you're dreaming.

Thank you all for such great input...I have only just started doing the reality checks while awake, i look about and say "am i dreaming" then say ahh no not this time..i also read on here that the nose pinch and try and breathe one is good, so i go round doing that lol, bear in mind i have only been doing this for about 4 days now though..in reply to Dthoughts...I have sleep paralysis and i go into that aware, i have to calm myself and tell myself not to be scared and that always throws me into a lucid dream, if it doesnt then i just wake up.....i have tried counting to 100 saying "im dreaming" in between counts and also tried to forma scene but i have trouble with that one, seems i cant see nothing not sure if i'm doing the one right, i havent tried any other techniques but read about the wild ones which always take you into sleep paralysis first and with having SP anyway the thought of actually forcing it to happen scares me, think its the feeling in my body i get from it. I recently started taking 5HTP but not noticed that it hasn't helped unless the 2 dreams that i had of knowing yet not turning lucid means i'm getting closer to bringing it on. I'm going to relay my dream diary onto here too, i read some already and make me laugh, you are all very funny and i love reading the chat on here :)

Long ago I would only have full blown lucid dreams or non lucid dreams. I never would have said Im dreaming and not KNOW that I really was dreaming. But that all changed when I joined dreamviews and started reading about people saying in dreams that they were dreaming without actually understanding it. Once I saw other people had experienced that it happened to me. I can think of a few dreams now in which I have stated that it was a dream without me ever really realizing that it was a dream.

In one case I was absolutely positive that I was awake and I went into my friends house and woke him up to tell him he was dreaming as a joke. The next morning I realized that he wasnt even at his house that night and I actually dreamed about telling him he was dreaming. He also said to me that he had a dream where I woke him up and said he was dreaming that same night. neither of us became lucid when we had the same exact dream in which I said it was a dream.

This has happened to me many times, I think if you perform a reality check in your dream you will have more of a chance to become lucid.

It looks like i really need to work on those RC's while awake and hopefully i will end up performing them in my dreams, it's so annoying though when you wake and realise! It happened again last night, me knowing it was a dream but bugger all LOL..i would love to be able to share dreams that would be so cool, but even better when you know you are dreaming eh waterknight he he :) think i had better get my RC's mastered first though!, thanks again for the replies, your a great bunch on here :)

I don't know if this will help anyone else but this is something that happened to me in a dream I just woke up from not long ago. I was in a place I knew I shouldn't be and started to question whether I was dreaming or not. Okay, done this before and managed to not become lucid. I had to force myself to stop paying attention to everything that was going on around me (it wasn't easy) and concentrate on why I was here, how I got here, etc. My DCs were staring at me like I was crazy. Then I tried to say "I'm lucid" but I couldn't, it was like the dream was trying to stop me. I had to pause and build up the energy and willpower to be able to say it, and when I finally shouted the words and believed in them, everything around me became brighter and more detailed.

Anyway the point, I think in situations like this you have to consciously STOP the dream plot temporarily because it's so distracting that even if you do realize you're dreaming, you might be too caught up in what's going on to fully realize what it means to know that you're dreaming, if that makes any sense. It's like watching a movie while being fully aware of the fact they're all just actors, versus being the director.

A lot of beginners have this problem, but after a while, if you get really good at DILD, then you can just notice something out of place and immediately become lucid.

in my experience there are various levels of lucidity. this fellow reece jones has done some videos on it and broken it down into reasonable subdivisions. i tend to agree with his synopsis for the most part.

A Brief Summary

Layer Zero (Minor):
Engaging in lucid dream discussion without becoming lucid.

Seeing lucid dreaming related material without becoming lucid.

Thinking about lucid dreaming related material without becoming lucid.

One or all of these criteria can be met for it to classify as Zero (Minor).

Layer Zero (Major):
Nothing feels quite real within the dream, yet you never become fully lucid.

You get the sense that theres no consequences or repercussions, yet you never become fully lucid.

You get the sense that you can reset or stop the experience entirely, yet you never become fully lucid.

One or all of these criteria can be met for it to classify as Zero (Major).

Layer One (Minor):
You become lucid and then startle yourself back to waking life within seconds.

You're in a nightmare of sorts, you realise you're dreaming and choose to wake yourself up.

One or both of these criteria can be met for it to classify as One (Minor).

Layer One (Major):
You become lucid and within seconds you have a false awakening and carry on non lucid.

You become lucid and within seconds you fade to the black (not fully awake) and eventually re-enter non lucid.

One or both of these criteria can be met for it to classify as One (Major).

Layer Two (Minor):
You'll realise you're dreaming, although you won't fully understand the implications of what dreaming really is. The dream will be fairly unstable (flickering scenery, blurry textures, etc). You'll not have full control over your actions and at points it may feel like you're watching a movie. Dream characters are not aware that they're merely dream characters. You also still feel as if the dream characters are real people.

You realise that you're dreaming, but don't care enough to try and take control.

Layer Two (Major):
You'll realise you're dreaming, although you won't fully understand the implications of what dreaming really is. The dream will be fairly unstable (flickering scenery, blurry textures, etc). You'll not have full control over your actions and at points it may feel like you're watching a movie. You still feel as if the dream characters are real people. Although, ironically, they seem to realise that they're just dream characters. They seem to have more awareness than you!

A dream character informs you that you were dreaming earlier on in the dream. You believe this, but don't think to check if you're still dreaming now.

Layer Three (Minor):
You'll realise you're dreaming and fully understand the implications of what dreaming really is. The dream will be stable and vivid. However, you'll not have full control over your actions and at points it may feel like you're watching a movie. You understand that the dream characters are merely a facet of your imagination, although they still believe that they're real.

When you become lucid, you understand the full implications, but youre not in total control. Because youre watching it unfold without any real influence over it, you become so immersed in the dream you lose lucidity. Later on you regain lucidity and remember how earlier on in the dream you were also lucid.

Layer Three (Major):
You'll realise you're dreaming and fully understand the implications of what dreaming really is. The dream will be stable and vivid. However, you'll not have full control over your actions and at points it may feel like you're watching a movie. You understand that the dream characters are merely a facet of your imagination, and they also understand this.

You realise that youre dreaming and understand the full implications, but consciously make the decision to not interfere and instead, you let it run its course. So, it may be like watching a movie again. But youve chosen for it to be that way.

Layer Four (Minor):
You realise that youre dreaming, and the full implications of what dreaming really is will sink in. The dream will also be very stable and vivid. You will also have full control over your actions. However, dream characters will not be aware that it is a dream.

Layer Four (Major):
Full control. Unity. All dream characters aware. Stable and vivid. From here its easier to enter OBEs.

the worst ive ever done was tell my friend that since we were in a dream i would teach him about lucid dreaming, and then grew out my giant raven wings i can only use while lucid and flew before telling him to try. never "clicked" into lucidity and it seemed 3rd person.

This happens to me occasionally. Your dream self knows you're in a dream, but non-lucidly. This probably happens as with any other dream occurrence - you could be able to fly, for instance, but your mind will make up an excuse - in your example, your mind made up an instance where it wouldn't matter if you were to flood the house: because you were dreaming.

One time I had a dream where I was making all these elaborate preparations to have a lucid dream. Little did I know I was already asleep!
